John Bolton: Defense Spending Should Be Off The Table When Cutting Budget (VIDEO)

John Bolton Defense Spending

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/28/10 10:05 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

John Bolton, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and potential 2012 GOP presidential candidate, expressed his belief this week that defense spending should be insulated from the likely wave of budget cuts spurred by a new era of GOP leadership next Congress.

"I think you've got to be just as much on the outlook for waste and fraud in defense spending as anywhere else, but the fact is we're entering a very uncertain period in the world. We've got a lot of threats out there that we're not ready for. Not just nuclear proliferation, but chemical and biological weapons," Bolton said on Fox Business, before explaining a variety of threats that he considered pertinent. "This is not the time to cut back. I understand there's a lot of pressure to get deficits down. I'm all in favor of it. But national security comes first, pure and simple, as far as I'm concerned."

While it is a commonly held belief amongst Republicans that "runaway spending" in Washington needs to be addressed, many have hesitated to call for this new focus to be extended toward the Pentagon. Last month, however, many conservatives announced that everything, including defense, should be on the table when it comes to seeking a smaller budget.

GOP senators such as Tom Coburn have also argued that the "sacred cow" of defense spending can no longer be seen as an untouchable budget area, much to the chagrin of his Senate colleague John McCain.

Senate newcomer Rand Paul has also said that the GOP must be willing to consider military spending cuts.

While many potential Republican presidential candidates haven't yet staked a position on the issue of draining funds from particularly contentious areas of the budget, Bolton already appears to have company in Sarah Palin when it comes to the view that defense spending should be sacrosanct.

It's not "defense" spending.

It's "offense" spending.

And should therefore be stopped altogether.

Obsolete weapons should become an historical footnote and not be funded. Obsolete pundit should be an historical footnote and not a policy maker.

The budget cuts should definitly include defense. It is not a sacred cow and it is time that the government stops acting like it is.

Before anyone puts a microphone up to Bolton, can someone provide with an update as to what defense contractors this guy is consulting for? I am at a loss as to the ineptitude of reporters who quote people like Bolton but don't do their homework as to what this guy's motivation is for saying the things he does.

The way war is waged is completely different from when "Grandpa Bolton" was around. The US is no longer capable of being the "world's policeman." With our economy is shambles, two wars, and growing unemployment we have to reduce spending in a number of areas. This includes the military.

Bolton needs to take his outdated ideas back to Jurassic Park...that goes for the 30's era mustache that he sports as well...the guy looks like "The Professor" from the old "Felix the Cat" cartoon with that mustache...geesh!

By the way, can someone please tell me why we should be listening to anything that is being said by former members of the Bush Administration? This goes for Rove, Bolton, Cheney, Gonzales, Dana Perraro and Ari Shapiro as well. The only person that I respect from the former administration is our current Secretary of Defense - Gates.

Ridiculous.

You can't be taken seriously by anyone with a modicum of good sense if you are talking about serious budget cuts without including defense spending.

Thank you, Professor Crankypants. Please return to the playroom. We'll call you when we need another tantrum thrown.

If "Defense" spending is "sacrosanct" then war is sacred. Are we Spartans, or Americans? Far from trying to make war sacred, it should be something we loathe and despise, something we never engage in unless there is no other choice. Republicans worship war because so many of them have gotten rich because of war. Death and destruction mean nothing to them as long as they are profitable.

Is John Bolton the most incompetent diplomat in US history? That is the question that I want answered. Time and again, he has made outrageous and dubious pronouncements that have later proved to be incorrect. Of course, Bolton and the GOP claims to want to balance the budget, but they want to take out the easiest place to cut spending. Given the fact that older Americans tend to be more conservative, I will be fascinated to see the response to the inevitable GOP proposal to sharply cut Medicare and Social Security.

If Bolton isn't the most incompetent, then surely Jeanne Kirkpatrick must have been. I can't think of any other "diplomats" who rival them.

As Bill Maher put it about Bolton:
Dye your moustache to match your toupee. You're a US ambassador, not Manager of the Month at Baskin-Robbins.
