Sand Sculptures From Australia's Creepy Crawlies Exhibition (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 12/28/10 08:46 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Australia welcomed sand sculptors from around the world to join their Australian counterparts in creating amazing figures for Melbourne's Creepy Crawlies exhibition.

Spiders, frogs and scorpions were among the sandy squirmers making an appearance. Also on display was an oversized tribute to the Beatles, reports the Examiner.

The mind-blowing sculptures will line the Melbourne waterfront through April 26. Check out some of the highlights here:

This world would be a truly bland place without all the beauty and fascination and wowness that artists from across the entire spectrum of 'canvasses' give us all.

I raise my glass in respect and gratitude to every last one of them.

It was artist from around the world participating in an Australian event. They were not all done by Aussies. I wish they would name the artist and where they were from though.

I work at this exhibition in Frankston - I can tell you who the artists were on each sculpture. Which in particular do you want to know?

" We have again invited the best sculptors from around the world - from the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and the UK, to Singapore, Canada and the USA - to join with their Aussie workmates to form a team of 21 artists. "

What an incredible display of artistry! Wonderful event - good for Aussies to put it together. Thanks for explaining the event.

It looks like masonry sand, which is a lot easier to carve than beach sand.
The work is still, of course, very, very impressive.

And unlike most sand sculpting, this is open to the public for four full months, from December 26 2010 to April 27 2011.

I am in awe. I cannot imagine how they make these!

They layer sand with water to get a huge mound of well packed sand that sticks together, than start carving from the top and work your way down. Probably done in teams of 3 or more.

Thank you. Now I won't lose sleep over it tonight!
