From Roger Federer to Alex Ovechkin to Cam Newton, 2010 brought us some of the most incredible plays we'll ever see. Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle made arguably the best baseball play of the year on Opening Day. The Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Houston Texans with a last-second hail mary touchdown pass and the Oklahoma State defense made a ridiculous interception against Oklahoma. But which play do you think is the best of the year? Vote now for the best plays of 2010.

Roger Federer's Between-The-Legs-Shot In 2010 US Open
1 of 19
Roger Federer hit another perfect between-the-legs shot in his 1st round match in the 2010 US Open against Brian Dabul. He got a standing ovation and some argue it was better than the one he hit against Novak Djokovic in the 2009 US Open.

Hey !! How come nothing about the Canadian Olympic women's and men's hockey teams winning gold ?!?

Where is Patrick Kane's incredible winning goal at the 2010 Stanley Cup final (game 6 in Philly) That was pure beauty, so smooth that it didn't light the lamp. Only the goalie and Patrick knew it went in. That's the best play in 2010 IMO.

I here ya! What a great night that was!

No disrespect to Junior hockey, but if you want to have a shootout goal. Then you need to have Linus Omark's shootout goal against the Lightning.

if youve seen one nohitter youve seen em all. although it is incredible luck for noone to get a hit, its extremely boring. the soccer goals were just getting a lucky bounce and an easy kick, nothing spectacular there. its not like the defenders were psyched out or hurdled. desean jackson picking up his dropped kick return and dodging everyone for the game winning touchdown that prevented overtime was incredible though.

how did anthony pettis off the wall kick against ben henderson for the belt not make the list? that was by far the most exciting sports move of the year. noone had ever done it before, it required amazing skill and luck, and it was for a championship belt.

It didn't make the list because HP thinks that MMA is a brutal bloodsport that is only good for hyperbolic headlines with gory photos.

Only three of these stand out as truly amazing plays. Federer's between the leg shot, the OSU interception, and Buehrle's throw for the out. The rest are great plays but are common. Most are interesting because of the importance or the game or because the plays were game winners, not because they were "amazing" plays.

To me the winner was the interception by OSU. I have never seen anything like that in my life.

What about Crosby's goal in the Olympic final? How did that get overlooked?
07:50 PM on 12/30/2010
That and Patrick Kane's goal in the Stanley Cup finals. Couldn't agree more. (What's with the bias?)

I just wonder why any of these "wonderful" soccer plays were included in the list? Check them out!

I know for sure who did not do the best play of 2010, Alex Cujavante in the 2010 Roller Speed Skating World Championships! :)

I just don't get why the US (a 13th-ranked team) beating Algeria (a 33rd-ranked team) by a late goal is the best sports event. It was hardly an upset. That said, the US National Team only managed one win out of four matches in the 2010 World Cup. Only US fans have the arrogance to say it was the best of 2010. Much of the rest of the world is still miles ahead of a team than can only boast a 1-0 win against the 33rd-ranked team in the world. As someone who has grown up an (association) football fan, I see the US-Algeria game as the most over-hyped match of the year!

In a just world,. the Fabregas Assist/Iniesta Goal that won the world cup would be on this list, because that was sublime work. Of course, both the players involved are genius players, two of the best midfielders there are.

I also question the inclusion of the Ronaldo goal. I saw better this weekend in Chelsea vs. Arsenal, which is to say, two teams that were actually evenly matched, not Portugal beating up on North Korea. Ronaldo only flourishes in situations where he can bully a significantly less skilled side.
08:53 AM on 12/30/2010
Agreed. Personally, I view the Donovan and Ronaldo picks as an insult to all the great (association) football that has been played this year. It is a testament to the almost comical "Landon Donovan and David Beckham are among football's best" naïveté of many US fans. I do hope this country develops a greater appreciation for the beautiful game.

Several of these "incredible" plays seemed rather dull to me. Especially the soccer goals.

In my opinion, a "Play of the Year" should include most of the following criteria:

1) Drama -- Is it during a playoff or championship game, a tournament or between bitter rivals? Did it happen at a crucial moment such as at the buzzer, or in overtime?

2) Incredible Skill -- Is it a shot/throw/kick/tackle/goal that is extremely difficult to pull off by an average player but within the skill set of a true All Star?

3) Luck -- Even with the exceptional skills mentioned above, is it still a low-percentage shot/play? Was there almost some form of "divine intervention"?

4) Rarity -- Something you do not see happen often in the sport. A play/shot/etc that truly is surprising.

For example: Roger Federer's shot between the legs... Yes, he has pulled it off twice in competition (so far), but what if he overshot the baseline? What if his opponent pulled the same play on the next serve? What if Roger was just playing with his buddy at home? Would it be a contender for Play of the Year? Hardly.

A standard goal kick is not worthy of contention here, no matter what level of said tournament/game it was in. It does have drama, but it lacks in the other categories I listed above. An impressive play certainly, but not PotY material if you ask me.

The OSU interception meets all of those.

1. Drama - OU and OSU are perennial rivals and it was for the chance to play for the Big 12 Championship. It was a key interception in a close game.

2. Skill - Diving out of bounds to deflect the ball back inbounds took incredible skill and also presence of mind.

3. Luck - You can't watch the play without thinking about how lucky it was. It was also risky because the deflected ball could have become a reception and not an interception.

4. Rarity - I certainly have never seen anything like it.

The out by the pitcher also had most of that. The only thing missing was a little more drama.
03:48 AM on 12/30/2010
its hard to pick because those 4 categories probably would each get a different play. most drama would probably be mich. state with the buzzer beater to go to the sweet 16. incredible skill would go to the oklahoma interception or the tennis shot between the legs. luck probably goes to the fla gators 75 ft 3 pointer or a baseball no hitter. rarity would probably go to the saints. some extra categories to add would be Guts and Sheer Awesomeness. Id say the saints were most gutsy for the onside kick to start the second half and Polamalu for Sheer Awesomeness.
