New Year's Resolution: 84% Want To Find A New Job

New Year's resolutions come in all shapes and sizes. From losing weight to spending less to finding a new job it seems everyone has something they'd like to change.

It seems the thing most people want to change this year, is their job. 84% of working individuals plan to find a new job in the new year, according to Manpower, a job-placement firm.

That's up a staggering 24% from last year.

The change comes largely from the fact that people seem to simply be disappointed with their current positions, as wages have frozen, according to CNN Money. However, this doesn't necessarily mean there will be a large number of available jobs.

While the desire to change jobs may be powered in many cases by dissatisfaction with management, it may actually have more to do with money, according to The Street. Wages have grown marginally since the height of the recession ended, and many are looking for greater income.

While unemployment was up at the end of 2010, the outlook for 2011 looks better, and may afford many workers the opportunity to make career changes.

If 84% hate their jobs, let's play musical chairs. Maybe all will be happier once the music stops.

In an honest government, our leaders  would be reporting the out-migration of some of our most knowledgeable and skilled Americans.  Yesterday, I learned that our premier high tech public traded corporation is pulling up stakes and moving en toto to China, including the CEO and his family. How can our President ignore such knowledge that is destroying our modern status as a nation?   Of course, we are already headed towards second-rate military status.  Without industry and technology and competent workers, nothing of value exists.  This nation's leadership breaks my heart.

I've learned over a 30 year career that that a company is defined not by how they treat their employees when times are good, but by how they treat them when times are bad. I know there are things that have to be done when times are tough, but some companies take advantage of the situation. I know where I work took advantage of us, and still are. 84% sounds about right.

Don't expect it to get any better. With the # of unemployed in this country right now, they have you guys just where they want you.

A disadvantage for companies in cutting pensions & benefits is that it gives employees less incentive to stay-put. American are always looking for an improvement..but 84% is close to a consensus that the grass may be greener on the other side of the fence. This does seem to support Arianna Huffington idea's about pressure on the middle-class. A lot of the people may be looking for the opportunity to stay in or to get back into the middle-class. People may want to move...dissatisfied by their management...its startling to think 84% of those managers may be looking to move too. Looks like musical chairs may become the new national sport.

Not going to find anything better though... too many people out of work... there is not incentive for employers to provide anything better.

I think the main reason for the large number of Americans disaffected with their current positions has been a direct result of diminished disposable income for all Americans not in the "lucky spermatozoa club".

Corporations have used the economy as an excuse to cut wages and benefits even though they are sitting on more cash than they ever have.

High unemployment rates keep wages and benefits stagnate and may actually be lowering wages for many Americans.

Rising health care costs and the cost of a college degree will keep the working poor, poor and working and the middle class shrinking.

Most states are in the red and will get no help from a new House that lacks compassion and the same goes for the unemployed.  This will lead to a new round of foreclosures, lay-offs, and bankruptcies.

Buckle up folks, the ugliness from this economy is just starting.

You're right on all counts. Unfortunately.

I really think that the powers that be are too entrenched to make progress for the 98% in America. GREED has been made legal so unless common sense legislation is passed (unlikely), things will stay the same or get worse. What makes workers think that IF they get another job they will not be worked to death and paid a stagnant wage in the new job? Business is looking for the bottom line (higher profits), which will be borne by the workers. People will have less disposable income in 2011 so less spending by Americans is a given. I think Corporations have abandoned America and are seeking growth in emerging markets like China (they have money to spend and have a lot of catching up to do on buying products). Unfortunately, we will not be producing those needed products here in America so the new jobs will be few and far between.

New job? Heck, anyone currently employed should be happy with anything versus being unemployed.

Many people want A job -- and the ones that have one are often being mistreated and want A different job. It's completely typical and completely disgusting. During these time companies exploit employees and through fear of termination get them to do twice the work. This raises profit and burns people out. There is always someone to replace them. Always.

Ah yes, the 'freshmeat' theory, the new employee incentive program: Work, or get fired. But, what happens when the Big Socioeconomic work-eat-sleep treadmill suddenly lurches to a halt? Well, socio-economic culture shock, or something like that. Then, the geo-moguls say 'let them go starve in the streets' or something, and the former workers say, 'no, we'll start our OWN company, instead', and then they run better institutions of business that can not only make a profit, but also do a good job of treating their employees like people, humans. Then, the management gets kind of greedy, start laying people off, and giving themselves bonuses, putting the pressure on their employees to produce, and the cycle begins anew.

dmessy excellent post F&F,excerpt:"Best Govt. Corporations can Buy" The corporate control of our country is so vast that people —should be banding together against reckless Big Business steamroller.

Conservatives need to remember critical cautions against misbehaving or over-reaching businesses and commercialism by Adam Smith, All knew that the commercial instinct and drive know few boundaries to relentless stomping or destruction of the basic civic values for any civilized society.

When eighty percent of the Americans polled believe ‘America is in decline,’ they are reflecting in part the decline of real household income and the shattered bargaining power of American workers up against global companies.

headline in the Washington Post: “A Bargain for BMW means jobs for 1,000 in S. Carolina: Workers line up for $15 an hour—half of what German counterparts make.”

The German plant is backed by South Carolina taxpayer subsidies and is not unionized. Newly hired workers at General Motors and Chrysler, recently bailed out by taxpayers, are paid $14 an hour before deductions. The auto companies used to be in the upper tier of high paying manufacturing jobs. Now the U.S. is a low-wage country compared to some countries in Western Europe and the trend here is continuing downward.

Workers in their fifties at BMW plant, subsidizing their lower wages with their tax dollars, aren’t openly complaining, Not surprising, since alternative in a falling economy is unemployment or a fast food job at $8 per hour.

Good luck with that.... over the last decade over 5.5 million jobs were outsourced. Only 3 million US jobs were produced. That is exactly why it became harder and harder to find jobs, and why you had people moving all over the country to even have one. We became modern day migrant workers.

This past year less than 750,000 jobs were created, with most being low-paying or temporary positions. Even retail lost jobs. During this same time 1.4 more jobs were outsourced. See where this is going?

Wow! All those folks left doing the work they had plus the work of their associates who've been "let go" or "right-sized" or whatever, want to find work elsewhere? Who could have imagined such a result? I'm shocked - shocked, I tell you!

Why is that so shocking? Since this depression began, many employed have been stuck in jobs that overload them, diminished their salaries and essentially have treated them as indentured servants.

That being said, it will make it much harder for the unemployed to compete with working individuals since recruiters (in IT anyway) seem to prefer candidates that are already working.

I've noticed that since I've found work, I get several offers per week. I don't let that delude me into thinking that the economy is improving, though. I'm afraid my son will be living with us until I can witness his mid-life crisis.

Tell your Son the best thing to do for Entry Level jobs is to network. Entry Level jobs along with experienced positions are no longer being advertised. It's not what you know it's who you know.

I am a recent grad and I don't even look at job boards any more I look for free events to attend in the city where I can actually meet and talk to working professionals.

If you have the extra cash, give him some money to attend networking events and social gatherings. Also if he can get an internship that will keep his Resume current hopefully as it has done for me. The investment will pay off with a new job in the new year hopefully.

Where are the jobs? Overseas, of course
American consumers have little to do with the big profits many top American corporations are now racking up
By PALLAVI GOGOI, Associated Press
APCorporate profits are up. Stock prices are up. So why isn't anyone hiring?

Actually, many American companies are -- just maybe not in your town. They're hiring overseas, where sales are surging and the pipeline of orders is fat.

More than half of the 15,000 people that Caterpillar Inc. has hired this year were outside the U.S. UPS is also hiring at a faster clip overseas. For both companies, sales in international markets are growing at least twice as fast as domestically.
