Michelle Williams: 'Proud' of 'Blue Valentine' Oral Sex Scene With Ryan Gosling

It earned her film a temporary NC-17 rating, but the woman in the middle of the 'Blue Valentine' oral sex controversy wouldn't have had it any other way.

When asked in an interview with Reuters what she thought about the film's NC-17 rating (later changed to R after protest), Williams was defiant.

"I thought, 'I've never seen that before in a movie and I'm proud to be the first. Good on us for making that happen,'" she said. "As the woman in the situation that was in question, I found absolutely nothing scandalous, tawdry or disgusting about it."

In fact, she was offered the chance to remove the scene. No dice.

"When we shot that scene, both Ryan and Derek said to me, 'If this bothers you when you see it in the movie, we'll take it out,'" she explained. And to her credit, the scene stayed and the moviegoers nation-wide can see it.

I'm proud of all the sex scenes I've done in movies as well. Let me count all of them... zero, ... hmm I guess it's just zero so far, I thought it was more before I started counting. Anyway, if I had done greater than zero number of sex scenes in movies, I would still be proud of all of them, and encourage people to buy DVDs of it so I could collect some portion of the royalties (unless I just got paid once in cash for each film, in which case I wouldn't care about sales since that stuff is mostly just put on the Internet anyway). And if they didn't pay me... well then it would be another celebrity sex tape, only I'm not famous. But enough about me. Congratulations to Michelle Williams for actually being in a real sex scene that actually made it into a movie! What a great way to jump-start an acting career in Hollywood! Of course the funny thing about Hollywood is you aren't supposed to let people see everything, but instead give a big impression but still leave them wanting more. For the other type of film made in California by lower-budget studios with less-than-prestigious reputations, you ARE supposed to let them see everything, and don't leave them wanting more, but instead show them everything they want to see. And also get tested regularly for STDs. Those are spreading a lot in the sexfilm industry.

Sorry dear, but you are not the first actress to blow someone off in a movie.

If you ever get the chance, check out the documentary "This Film Is Not Yet Rated", and they talk about how some films with exact content will get harsher ratings due to things like the characters were lesbians or just female.

The masturbation scene in "But I'm a Cheerleader" got the movie an NC-17, while Kevin Spacey jerking in the shower in American Beauty got an R, even though I'd suggest the Spacey one was actually more graphic.

Also there's the oral sex scenes in Boys Don't Cry and another movie that escapes me. The BDC one was Hillary Swank going down on Cloe Sevigny (I believe) and the other one was guy going down on a woman. THAT one got an R rating, while BDC got an NC-17 and had to cut that scene.

Great doc if you get the chance to see it. Interesting how the ratings are given sometimes arbitrarily.

Ugh, I hate oral in features. Especially cunnilingus, which is always shot in the exact same tacky fashion: making out, person on top slides down out of frame, camera stays on bottom's face, bottom makes stupid facial expression like "O, I wasn't expecting that. I thought you were going down there to tie my shoelaces." The only decent oral sex I think I've ever seen in a reputable film was in Caligula, and that was actual explicit sex.

You go girl! I've been involved in countless oral scenes and I'm DAMN proud of each and everyone of them. And I'm sure all those girls were too! And they should be proud! Although there was that one girl in Sheboygan .........

Who wrote this article.  I don't like when there are sentences like this: "And to her credit, the scene stayed and the moviegoers nation-wide can see it." -- with no byline.

Yes, regardless of merits, should be a modicum of journalism going on here but instead . . .

A graphic oral sex scene in a movie is as important to the plot as it is in a porn flick.

You know the old school dimming of the lights and fading out to next scene worked for me. Please if people want to see something they will get it on the net...for free...sex is overrated.

I'd like for Christina Hendricks from "Mad Men" to be proud of her mammary intercourse scene with JohnnyAce Okeke in the hit movie "Dolemite: The Sequel" (2011)

the traditional love making scenes are too boring for the viewers who have access to free internet sex - so the movie production companies have to up the ante to sell. It's all about $$$ not so much the theatrical performance. Ryan and Michelle personify young and desirable people for this sort of sexual based genres. Not a lot of dramatic complexities behind it.

Just saw King's Speech- no sex scene- GREAT MOVIE! Different league of actors/actresses, real talented people and a real work of art.
