Gov. Christie Defends 'Disney World' Trip During Blizzard

FREEHOLD, N.J. -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was criticized for vacationing in Florida as a blizzard pummeled the East Coast, defended his trip and praised his state for its response to the storm, which dumped nearly three feet of snow in some parts.

Speaking Friday at his first news conference since returning home, Christie said all major decisions on the state's response he made in consultation with state Senate President Stephen Sweeney. Sweeney, a Democrat, had been serving as acting governor after Christie, a Republican, left the state Sunday morning hours before the snow started to fall in earnest.

"We did not have any significant loss of life," Christie said, calling it an "extraordinary accomplishment."

The rising GOP star, who often is mentioned as a presidential contender, defended taking his children to Disney World for a week while Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno also was away and said he was in constant contact with his staff and Sweeney as the storm unfolded.

"I would have been doing the same thing here as I would have been there," Christie said. "I would have been in a room someplace. I would not have been out, like, driving a plow."

Christie and Guadagno were heavily criticized by residents and fellow lawmakers for being out of the state at the same time. A new website by a Washington-based liberal advocacy group called the Progressive Change Campaign Committee even features photos from Christie's campaign trips altered to depict him in a red-and-white stocking cap like the itinerant character in the "Where's Waldo?" children's books and asks, "Where's Chris Christie?"

On Friday, Christie was anything but apologetic. He said he wouldn't have changed anything he did and local mayors were to blame for unplowed neighborhoods. He then blasted lawmakers who criticized him and Guadagno for being absent even though those lawmakers didn't know the context of Guadagno's trip: She was on a cruise in Mexico with her ailing father.

"It was clearly a partisan thing," he said. "I know what my responsibility is. And I know my responsibility as a father. I wanted to be there with my kids... I had a great five days with my children. I promised that."

When it became clear that the storm was getting worse, Christie said his wife warned him to not "even think about" canceling the trip.

Christie also said the lieutenant governor's position was created primarily to take over for a governor who leaves office permanently, not so the lieutenant could take over every time he leaves town.

Even if he wanted to return early, Christie said, there was no way he could have because of problems at commercial airports. He pointed to the fact his flight home from Florida, originally scheduled to leave at 9 p.m. Thursday, was delayed by six hours.

Christie also said there were no reports of storm-related deaths or of ambulances that couldn't reach homes in time, as there were in New York. That wasn't completely true. At least one woman gave birth in her car, and emergency responders had to use a sled to reach another man who was having a heart attack at his home and later died.

Those cases appeared isolated, however, given the thousands of people stranded in the storm, which saw 50 mph winds and more than four inches of snow come down an hour.

More than 550 vehicles had to be removed from New Jersey roads, and Christie said more than 2,200 pieces of equipment were used to clear the snow. He said that overall things went as well as could be expected, and he gave the state an A for effort and a B-plus for results in its response to the storm.

"We planned for this, and they executed the plan," he said.

Still, on Friday he signed a letter seeking money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help cover cleanup costs related to the storm.

And Christi's presence in NJ during the storm, how much of a difference would it have made?

Quote: I would have been doing the same thing here as I would have been there," Christie said. "I would have been in a room someplace. I would not have been out, like, driving a plow."

Smart phones and the "net" no one can be far removed from any problem no matter where they are.

It's called leadership. Otherwise, following your argument, why does he ever have to be in the state? He was MIA during the "race to the Top" hearings as well, stumping for GOP candidates in CA.
Not the first time.

Obama made four fundraising trips to California during the first 30 days of the oil spill. that was wrong. But I think that Christie made a mistake, particularly his comment about his wife suggesting FAHGEDDAH ABOUT GOING BACK.

The President also made several trips to the gulf with Bobby Jindal sitting next to him. He didn't go to Disney World and tell people in the gulf they made mistakes while he rode around on "Space Mountain". Christie constantly travels the country promoting his image in the GOP. He is Governor of NJ not of the U.S. President Obama is President of the entire United States. And Christie created a Lt. Governor's position paying her $141,000/yr of taxpayer money. He makes $175,000/yr in taxpayer money. Between the two them they make over $315,000/yr from taxpayers. But neither could give up their Christmas vacation for one week to be present during a huge storm in NJ that shut down major highways and had people snowed in. And Yes many areas received 30" of snow.

Please. They took time off during a relatively slow period. I'll give them credit for not vacationing during busy times. I'll give Christie credit for trusting his street department also.

NJ pays the Lt. Governor $141,000.yr and Christie $175,000/yr. So between the two of them one couldn't move their vacation back one week. The person in charge was a Dem.
Here are some problems NJ faced. And many areas had 30" of snow. And NO Christie was not coordinating the effort from Disney World. Just another Christie Lie.
Route 71 where I once lived was closed to all traffic for days because of stranded vehicles. Then there's Route 35 and 36 along the coast. Route 18, key to accessing New Brunswick and Rutgers U. Also 27. Route 34. Route 70 between Lakehurst and Brick. 72 to Mannahawkin. 68 into McGuire. Routes 47, 49, 50, 54, 55, 73 and 77. Route 33 through Freehold. Route 31. Route 12. Route 15.
NJ pays Christie and his Lt. over $315,000/yr in taxpayer dollars. But they said let them eat cake. We're going on vacation.

Sounds like there are a lot of hypocrites on both sides. Only those people who were complaining about Obamas vacations and playing golf during the oil spill should be complaining about Christie, those who defended Obama should keep quiet.

President Obama flew to the gulf many times during the oil spill. He also spent a considerable amount of time with Bobby Jindal in the gulf. Isn't Bobby Jindal Governor of the state. This is about comparable positions. Did Jindal go to Disney World during the Gulf spill? Every little thing with you guys to absolve your side of "foolish" behavior you wrap President Obamas name to it. You should be asking where was Governor Bobby Jindal during the spill. Well...he was doing his JOB...Present during an emergency in his state.

So you are saying that a snow storm, which occurs just about every year in this area and is a problem for a couple of days to a week at most; is in the the same league as a man made disaster that lasted months and will effect humans and wildlife for generations? I disagree.
I didnt get down on Obama for going on va k during the oil spill and I am not getting down on Christie for being out of town during a snow storm. I am not a slave to "optics".
And if you notice, I said that if you got down on Obama, you have no right to defend Christie and vice versa. What I mean is that both sides are guilty of condeming the other "side" for doing the same stuff that thier "side" does. It's silly, nitpicky, and childish.

Presidential contender? Seriously?

"I would have been doing the same thing here as I would have been there. I would have been in a room someplace. I would not have been out, like, driving a plow."

How does he put that on a 2012 campaign bumper sticker?

B'bye, Flounder!

In summary, ole C squared was unapologetic, shifted blame to the mayors, abdicated decision making to his wife, put his own family before an entire state, and took credit for a job well done. Wow, now that is a politician we can use in DC.

Gov Christie is asking for federal funds to help with the clean up. Wow amazing republicans never fail to amaze me with their hypocrisy. This is the same guy that scrapped a lot of projects in his state to create jobs and now he has the nerve to turn around and ask for funding. Unbelieveable that these people can do these things and GET AWAY WITH IT

Federal Gov is a wasteful gigantic monster UNTIL we need them then they are cool again.

No apologies, blame the local municipalities, same old routine. Christie still struggles with the concept that a picture is worth a thousand words. He's not a guy that will ever do a Mea Culpa.

And then there's the real story: Disney wouldn't let Cristie leave. They thought one of their characters was trying to escape.

It's not about what he would say, NJ was in a state of emergency, officially, and the Governor appeared to be MIA. At the very least, he could have addressed people's concerns with the press from the snow covered capitol steps. It's a bad picture, regardless.
11:16 AM on 01/03/2011
You only want one person to tell you? Hmm. You'll get it. You'll get it.

Or maybe you can just put "integrity" into the googler. No. Try "leadership."

Nevermind. Just forget it. This is one of those "if-you-have-to-ask...." moments.

Exactly, you responded to my question with no answer because the answer is nothing. He could not have done one more thing on site that he didn't already do over the telephone.
