Ceiling Fan Installed Hilariously Wrong (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/03/11 10:19 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Not only is it a Monday today, but the first Monday of the year after many had a week or so off from work, so chances are you're feeling a little sluggish. But don't worry because you're not alone. Saying a household appliance is having a "case of the Mondays" is a bit of a stretch, we know, but if you don't feel like you're all there this morning then you might identify with this ceiling fan. If only we could fix our workaday malaise by uncrossing a few wires. (Via Blame It On The Voices)

Hi, I am the original owner of the fan and video. We have been completely taken aback by the overwhelming response to our video. I just want to say that the fan came about 95% preassembled. The box was even labeled 5 minute install. I followed all of the instructions and completed the install just as described in the manual. After about 3 weeks of normal usage the fan started making a weird sound and then the blades stopped spinning and the lights started. We turned it off and after being stunned for a minute decided that it was funny and filmed it before exchanging it at Home Depot for a new one. My wife threw the video on youtube only because she wanted to use it on her blog. She forgot all about it until I started getting comments on it a month later. We are amazed that our video has gone viral! We never saw that coming. We wish now that we had kept our defective fan instead of exchanging it! We just want to assure everyone that the video was no hoax and the fan was unmodified. Thanks for watching our video!

Could you imagine turning this "fan" on, on a hot summer day! Imagine the words that would come out of your mouth!

I'm an electrician who has installed thousands of these. Elaborate prank but not possible without MAJOR modification.

I agree. I'm not an electrician, but I've installed plenty of these. And you're right: you can't get that effect without major modding.

During the tail-end of the disco era, my girlfriend and I were at a nightclub; the karge dance floor had blinking multi-colored floor inserts, and two ceiling-mounted revolving spotlight wheels each with about 15 multi-colored spotlight bulbs - the heavy kind. We were on the dance floor with another three couples, when one of these monstrosities fell from the 30 foot high ceiling. It landed about three feet from us, and probably would have killed us both if we were directly under it. I hurriedly told the owner, and he asked me if there were any more like this one. I said yes - two, and he immediately shut the other two down. Whoever installed these babies apparently looked at the special lock washers and figured they weren't necessary. Wrong! These lockwashers were provided so when the unit reversed, the final nut stayed tight and didn't unscrew! Ceiling fan joke funny - this wasn't!

Nicely done prank but I have to drop into Minnesotan for this: Oh ja! Dat's funny for sure, don'cha know.

It's obviously a prank. And it looks to me like all the prankster did was attach a freely rotating set of lights with an internal rubber band motor to the bottom of a standard unmodified ceiling fan. The lights were probably held in place, while the camera was set up, by a invisible string or maybe just a loose piece of tape that frees itself after a few seconds.

In other words, it's a cute prank but if you think it through making complicated mods or rebuilding of the fan itself would be the wrong way to set it up.

Is this really what Huffington Post has resorted to?

Posting a YouTube video with a cited link to a page linking a YouTube video? Really?

This reminds me of the time my husband rebuilt the transmission on our car. When he finished, we had 3 speeds in reverse and one forward. pa-dump-dump! :-)
