'Roll Your Own' Joint-Making App Approved By Apple (PICTURES)

Roll Your Own Iphone App

Here's an app we weren't expecting to see in Apple's App Store, given the company's stringent (albeit unpredictable) policies regarding the apps that it approves: "Roll Your Own," a free app that offers videos and over 70 photos to help you "master the art" of rolling, packing, and "crutches."

Roll Your Own promises to teach you not only the basics, but also more advanced rolling techniques such as the Crowd Pleaser ("Almost twice as long as the Classic & guaranteed to please the crowds!") or the Tulip ("A Dutch specialty that is sure to bring smiles!"). Based on 40 reviews, the app has four star rating.

Due to "frequent/intense alcohol, tobacco, or drug use or references," the app is only available for download by users over 17 years of age.

Apple has been far less tolerant of sexually suggestive apps--Apple CEO Steve Jobs reportedly said in an email that the iPhone and iPod offered users "freedom from porn"--and Apple removed thousands of R-rated apps from its Apple Store in a significant purge that occurred last year.

See screenshots of the app below. (h/t Krapps)

Huffington Post is breaking the golden rule. I mean if they are not feigning outrage then what is the point of reporting it? Are they trying to get the app pulled?

Who took the photograph for this article -- the only person left in the world who has never seen a joint (or cigarette for that matter) being lit?
11:25 AM on 01/09/2011
Hah, I was going to say. Who on earth lights a half rolled joint?

It's basically a free preview of the rolling methods outlined in The Joint Rollers Handbook that's been around for years. The part they aren't telling you is that while the basic "how-to" of rolling a simple joint (or cigarette for the tobacco use clause) is free you are required to pay for the extras like the tulip and others through a 99 cents in app purchase.

It's just a cutesy rolling app that may or may not make the app author some money through the in app component but not much else. The clowns that are getting all wound up over this obviously have no idea how to roll anyway and would be the ones best served by this app.

Otherwise, get your own copy of The Joint Rollers Handbook from Amazon at http://www.amazon.ca/Joint-Rolling-Handbook-Expert/dp/0932551238 and get a terrific assortment of techniques.

Uh that book is almost $40 & this app is free + has videos. Even 99 cents for the other j's sounds better than $40 to me ;-)

I don't think I need a book or IPhone app to tell me to form a cylinder.
10:12 PM on 01/04/2011
So are you one of the authors of that $40 book or what? Haha, you sound pretty defensive and your book pitch is pretty apparent. Just download the app, follow the instructions and relax. Happy New Year!

I prefer the inside-out roll. You start with the gum strip on the bottom facing you so that when you roll it, the excess paper overlaps the gum strip. After you seal it by licking through the paper to wet the gum strip underneath, you can light the flap of excess paper and it will burn off to the wet strip, leaving exactly one wrap of paper with no excess paper remaining.

Or you can just do it with the right amount of paper from the beginning instead of being a hack.

Porn Valley (aka San Fernando Valley) is also located in California, but Apple doesn't take kindly to that kind of content.

I use to think you might be a stoner if your bong gets washed more than your dishes, but now it is how many times you go to your iPhone "Roll Your Own" app.
