Snow In Southern California

Huffington Post     First Posted: 01/03/11 12:55 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

The snow didn't come early enough for a White Christmas, but Southern Californians in Valencia and Antelope Valley enjoyed light snowfall outside their windows January 2, 2011. But while the unexpected snow may have delighted some local residents, it posed problems for many commuters trying to make it home after the holidays.

It's snowing in Southern California! Celebrate the wacky weather by sharing your photos and videos of the snow in your neighborhood.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles motorists experienced massive traffic delays on what was the last possible day for Angelenos to return from their vacations in time for work this morning. Sections of the I-5 at the Grapevine and Highway 58 have been closed since yesterday due to poor weather conditions and resulting accidents. Commuters also encountered travel delays along snowy stretches like the Cajon Pass on the I-15 southbound, where Highway Patrol officers had to escort commuters to ensure road safety.

The National Weather Service warns that "winter weather conditions" will continue to affect Southern California mountain ranges, with eight to fourteen inches of snow expected to fall above 4000 feet, and with snowfall expected at just 1500 feet in areas like the Santa Clarita Valley. Southern California residents in these areas should expect continued traffic delays as a result.

Woah that's so weird I just a dream avoid driving through a snow storm on the pch

Actually, this IS being caused by global warming. The overall global temperature has been rising which has caused weather systems to shift from their old patterns. That snow on the outskirts of LA is a lot scarier than you think. We all need to get a clue.

Relax. It's January. This happens in the high desert and higher elevations around LA every year.

Yes, higher elevations, like say, the 4400 feet at the Grapevine, but NOT in Santa Clarita, at 2000 feet, where it snowed for the first time since 1989.

Nah. Just signs of the Apocalypse. Snow in SoCal, dead birds in Arkansas, Louisiana and Sweden, thousands of dead fish in Arkansas and Maryland, etc. Not to worry.

Nothing to see here, folks. Just a typical weather pattern moving through the southland. It has been happening since the beginning of time and will continue to do so

There is NOTHING typical about this.

It snowed in Santa Clarita for the first time since 1989. That is not "typical".

If it truly were "nothing to see", it wouldn't have been a national news story.

You want proof of climate change, go outside! The10 mph winds out there is making it colder than a witches t*t here in Fontana, but the snow looks pretty!

I grew up a half century ago on the edge of the desert in Southern Calif., at about 1400 feet elevation. We had snow every ten years or so (enough to stick on the ground for a while). Rare, but not unheard of here and there, now and then. Yes, after nearly 40 years in the Sacramento area, climate change is obvious here, but with odd variations year to year. I'd not make anything of a day or week's weather, or even an unusual season, in any particular place. It's the big picture that counts. FWIW.

my first year at UCDavis, december 1976, we had a snow storm, four inches fell over night , accumulated, looked amazing..
09:37 PM on 01/03/2011
This is normal isn't it?
Doesn't it always snow in the higher elevations when the rain comes through?
12:05 AM on 01/04/2011
For the most part, yes, but a few places like Valencia where I live only get snow that actually accumulates on the ground every decade or so, the last time being 1989. So for us it's kind of a big deal.

Yeah, Frazier Park and the Grapevine get snow, where the elevations are above 3500 feet.

Valencia is about 1800. Parts of Castaic around 2000. This was far from typical.

It has snowed at the beach in Malibu. It doesn't happen every year, but it's not unheard of.

Without higher temperatures and CO2 levels, life on earth will cease to exist. The earth's population has increased exponentially and having higher temps and CO2 is the only way to produce enough oxygen and food to sustain life.

Only the sophisticated few among the intellectual elite can comprehend the complexity of how the anthropogenic global warming phenomenon produces colder climates. The unwashed uneducated and simple minded masses will bleat about this as being proof that global warming is a fraud. Little do they feeble peon brains know that global warming actually produces a colder climate.

Are you a robot? If not then are you too stupid to understand itis a matter of degrees and percentages? The impending shift will wreak havoc on the biosphere that has adapted to another weather and climate pattern. But perhaps man's time is coming to an end and nature will fill the gap after man declines in dominance. Can't say the Earth will miss his rule much. Actually it will probably cheer.

Please, I need a medical doctor to operate on my ruptured spleen. You're not a doctor? You're not an expert in the medical field? I don't care. I want the dummest person I can get to operate on me, and tell me how everything will be just fine -- in fact I hope this person has a lot of simple-minded friends...one to administer anesthesia (who cares about the exact amount of a gas I need), a dum-a$$ woman posing as a 'nurse' to hand garden implements to the 'doctor'. Everything will be fine, because we don't need experts, or elites in this country. We only need id|ots who have a gut feeling, old time adages, and who think they know what they're doing.

Let's face it. It doesn't matter what Democrats do. Republicans will ALWAYS find something about it to criticize. Always.
