Floating City For Haiti Proposed By Architects Post-Earthquake (PHOTOS)

From Inhabitat:

While Haiti is still picking up the pieces after last year's devastating earthquake, the good news is that fascinating ideas about how to rebuild the island nation with a safer, more sustainable infrastructure are still pouring in. One of the latest proposals, from architect E. Kevin Schopfer and Tangram 3DS, caught our eye with its vision of Haiti reborn with a beautiful floating city. Dubbed Harvest City, the collection of islands would be a fully-functioning community where 30,000 residents could grow crops, promote industry and start a new life.

It's been almost a year now since Haiti was ravaged by a horrific earthquake, and while its citizens are still picking up the pieces, the good news is that there is no shortage of creative ideas about how to rebuild an even better, more sustainable infrastructure for the country. One of these ideas comes from architect E. Kevin Schopfer and Tangram 3DS, who envision the new Haiti to have a floating city on which people could produce food and promote industry. Called Harvest City, the collection of islands would be a fully functioning community of 30,000 residents based on the principle of Arcology (a mix of architecture and ecology), and could be a key player in Haiti's recovery.

Someone should take a look at Don Elwell's book "The Ganymeade Protocol". In it the characters live in a floating city made up of small private boats, all connected with a simple floating dock system. He's pretty detailed about how it would work, and it would coast a LOT less than what's being proposed and go together a lot faster.

They built this in Dubai for the rich people. I dont think it would last for a month with the Haiti people before it is tore up and turned to slums.

I wonder if this was developed in concert with local Haitians. Since there was no mention in the article, it just looks like a visionary but decidedly Western attempt to pour a foreign solution on local problems. I suspect Haiti could benefit from a sustainable, constructive engagement approach where people are empowered to develop their own solutions, which includes material support, but where solutions that come from within - so they have ultimate ownership of the process. This kind of process is slow, but it has worked in places like Tajikistan and Iraq. We (the US) doesn't do it very well most of the time when offering assistance.

Did the Architect forget that Haiti gets hit frequently by Tropical Storms and Hurricanes?

lots of live-aboards in places with hurricanes. Take a look on Google Earth at boot harbor in Marathon Key in the US. 300 plus mooring balls full of folks living on their boats in a protected harbor.

The earthquake victims will never even see these pictures, let alone a real floating city.

Most homeless Haitians would be pretty happy with a used shipping container to turn into a relatively safe home. Also, shipping containers actually exist - unlike the virtual floating city.

I think its a very cool idea in general. Like most, I would worry about tidal waves, children drowning, and also, 30k people is really not that many when there millions displaced. That all aside, while impractical for this purpose, its pretty cool that people are thinking outside the box for our future. Too bad we can't get the officials to think outside the oil drum.

Wow..folks are really on top of it here. They came up with this nifty concept and they even have a picture!!! I think I recall earthquakes being associated with enormous tidal events..

This country is a lost cause. You will never be able to save these people. This country has been a mess for 100 years with people practicing voodoo and all kind of strange customs. All non Hatians should leave and the country should be quarantined. Nobody goes in and nobody goes out and let nature take its course

Probably all of the above

This is a test post to see whether or not a hold has been placed on my account. For some reason, all of my recent posts re pending appeal, thereby necessitating his test. I apologize for this irritating post, however it must be done to discover whether there is, in fact, some sort of block in place. Please ignore this post.

It is not you. Huff has been very slow to post and in many threads has a backlog of 1000 or more posts "pending". This of course, makes a running dialog impossible.

Tired of Fear...

How can Haiti and the Dominican Republic—neighbors on the same island—have such different modus operandi?

Natural disasters cannot be prevented, but the fallout can be minimized. Haitians have consistently undermined their own prosperity by ousting or assassinating reformers.

This 'Floating City' will happen when they elect a real responsive government.

And do you know what role the US has been playing? Certainly not.

Do you know the history?
It has a lot more to do with the World Bank than the US.
03:18 PM on 02/21/2011
Well I can answer the first one of those: Ever since they rebelled against their European masters, Haiti has been crapped on by every colonial power on the planet. Even the US has invaded them twice, embargos from the French reduced the place to poverty early on, american fears of the place going communist led to some nasty US support for authoritarian governments in the 50-80's, and by that time, the place had been denuded of trees because, in absence of industry or oil, they cut them down to make charcoal so they could EAT. Haiti is a mess, and they had a hand in their own destruction, but they certainly weren't alone.

my personal opinion on this article is, if we are all trying in some ways to help Hati in some ways it would be rebuilding a new establishment and safer place from the earthquake. But by making a "Floating City" would not be the best sutable place for these people. If were talking money and buget wise then we can make the lad they live on noe better, not all the millions of dollars it would take to build a floating city, all the money just to build it and make it a living place would take alot more time and money then you think.
I agree with "donbrown" all the factors caused by water damage and the other situations dealing in the water distructions will ask for more damages then the earthquake previously had.

What an absurd idea.
How can living on a giant ship preteneding it is on land be better than
living on the land ? How can maintaining such a ship be cheaper ?
Well, it is a matter of control over the population, the food water, energy will
all be artificial provided. No cattle, chickens free water, places to go to the bathroom that are not regulated. Just as Tyson raises chickens, just as pork is produced.
England tried this in the late 1700's they had prison ships in Ireland and Boston harbor. Then, the inmates were chained to the sides but not forced to work.
The problem with Hati is not a lack of housing space, it is a lack of housing and every other basic need. Talk about Cuba, isolated and strangled....Hati is the capitalist failure of all time.
