President Obama's Flip Flops Called Style First By Historians (PHOTOS, POLL)

First Posted: 01/05/2011 10:05 am Updated: 05/25/2011 6:25 pm

President Obama may have sported a commander-in-chief first while in Hawaii, the New York Post reports: flip flops. He stepped out in the footwear to grab shave ice on the last day of his vacation (check out an image HERE) and various historians told the newspaper that they couldn't recall other leading men making the style same statement while in office.

Presidential historian Doug Wead remarked, "In public, no. I haven't seen the president's toes," adding, "It makes him look like a man of the people, and they [his advisers] probably like that it's an informal and inexpensive shoe."

Wead said once, a group of youngsters hit Jimmy Carter's White House for an event wearing sneakers, and "I remember Mrs. Carter looking down at their feet, horrified."

However Kathleen Hall Jamieson of the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Center for Public Policy best summed up the President's fashion decision, explaining, "If you were born in Hawaii, if you grew up in Hawaii, if you vacation in Hawaii and you don't wear flip-flops, then there is something seriously wrong with you. You don't wear wingtips to the beach in Hawaii."

Here's a blurry screenshot of Obama in his flip flops, taken from the KITV broadcast. Again, for a better image visit the Post:

I could care les about him wearing flip-flops, but do you see how he has aged so quickly?

Good Grief! Get one kama'aina to write your articles from Hawai'i! Flip flops are what politicians are accused of. Slaps are what we Maui (and O'ahu, and Big Island etc) boys wear! Go Punahou! (Which means no shoes at all!)

Isn't it wonderful that President Obama is human...wearing human gear.

This is so very silly H/P!

Much better than the obligatory trainers that most Americans wear on vacation.

My son wore flip flops to his college graduation, under his cap and gown. I didn't really care, just took the pictures from the waist up. I was so glad he finished school and when you graduate from Chico State, chances are you are gonna wear flip flops to the ceremony.

I think he looks stylish, and those aren't flip flops really. I was picturing the kind you can grab for $1.00 at a gas station. These are fine. I don't really want to see him with his shirt off again though. Everything looked fine until I got an eyeful of those moobs. I never want to see that again. It felt wrong.

The kids are wearing flip flops. He's got some kind of nerdy sandals, slippers. Anybody from the tropics/sub tropics knows it's mandatory.

The best looking presidents in my lifetime have been: John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama.

1. It's Hawaii, almost everyone wears some sort of sandal.
2. They're called slippers on the Islands.

As we are all fully aware, The Dude did not just happen to step out in sandals, looking like Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. This was a well planned and orchestrated outing. He must have had a good reason. He just has not shared the reason with the American public.

The last picture looks like sandals. And no one in Hawaii knows what flip-flops are. They're called slippahs.

That brings back memories. We used to call them Zoris in the fifties.

I'm from the Bronx and I'm pretty sure they'd be considered slippers there. I don't know why all of a sudden if the slip on, they're flip-flops. Flip-flops are those flimsy, nasty, thongy things some people insist on wearing to the beach.

I would have liked to have seen a more stylish flip-flop, but then again, what the hay! I love him anyway, he's a beautiful man inside and out, just totally yummy!

If the Post didn't like the President Obama wearing flip flops on vacation, then they peobably went gaga over President Nixon wearing black dress shoes on his beach walks.
02:38 AM on 01/07/2011
Or Bush wearing Croks and black "presidential seal" socks. On the day of the swearing in of a new congress this is what the Post prints? And they wonder why they are irrelevant.
