The New York Times:

New research suggests that resilience may have at least as much to do with how often people have faced adversity in past as it does with who they are -- their personality, their genes, for example -- or what they're facing now.

I have to agree. I have always felt that I went through some trauma growing up, but not too much.

I moved about 20 times in 20 years, parents were divorced when I was young, I was a latchkey kid and moved between parents. I lived with a seriously neurotic step-mother for a few years.

These were certainly unhappy experiences, and overwhelming at the time, but not enough to crush me. I'm much happier and better able to deal with stress as a result. I've seen other people though, who have had worse experiences, who never really recovered.

Since the article matches my personal experiences, it must be right. ;)

Can't say I agree with this article. What about the people who haven't been literally killed by experiences, but whose lives have been broken, and who have never recovered? PTSD is an extreme example - I wouldn't call that being made stronger.

I agree, what I have found these last 50 years of my life is that what doesn't kill you can really mess you up!
