Tom Coughlin To Critics: 'They Can Kiss My Ass' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/06/11 12:15 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

The New York Giants failed to reach the postseason, despite their 10-6 record after beating the Washington Redskins in the season finale. After the game, Giants coach Tom Coughlin addressed his critics and told his team how he truly feels in the locker room.

"From the bottom of my heart and everybody's, we have a 10-and-6 season, a 10-win season in the NFL, okay?" Coughlin said. "They can kiss my ass, okay? They can line up and kiss my ass. It's not an easy thing to do."

He went on to say that he would say more but the priest was in the room.

After the loss, Giants co-owner John Mara said that Coughlin will return as head coach next season.

I don't think he can get his team to a Super Bowl. Oh, he already has. Never mind.

I feel sorry for the Giant fans, especially the ticket holders to have a coach that is satisfied with mediocrity. It seems to me that all he cares about is his job. Once the Mara/Tish ownership said he'll be back next year all of asudden the Giants had a season to be proud of. Tom.....your no leader. It will be another 20 years before you get back to the big game.

Coughlin is right in that he played to a record that should have gotten his team into the playoffs. Still, that doesn't excuse blowing a 21-point lead to the Eagles in the second half of the 4th quarter. That happened because the coach wouldn't adjust the defensive scheme when it wasn't working, did not prepare his team for an onside kick, and didn't call the proper plays on offense to advance the line of gain to kill the clock. Making matters worse, rather than accept responsibility for the loss, Coughlin blamed it on the punter. Not good.

I have several problems with this comment. First, the players blew the lead, not the coach. The coach prepared the players well and put them in the right position to execute. In the end, the players stopped playing. Second, Coughlin, the head coach, doesn't call the defense, the defensive coordinator Perry Fewell does. Third, is the onside kick, TC has no idea whether or not its coming, Andy Reid even said if the giants sent out the hands team they kick the ball away so it was really a borderline situation and you don't know whats coming. The Giants didn't send out the hands team but the coach DID tell the players to watch for the onside kick, and you can see him yelling that on the sideline, but they didn't watch for it. Fourth, he never blamed dodge for the game, he yelled at him after the bad punt happened because dodge made a dumb mistake. That final touchdown was mostly the punters fault. The entire loss was not blamed on the punter though. The entire team broke down and stopped playing. If the offense got one first down at the end there they win. If the defense made one stop they win. Blaming the head coach for that loss doesn't make sense and saying that he blamed dodge for the entire game just because he yelled at dodge after he screwed up, is preposterous.

OK OK OK OK First off, the coach is not the one on the field executing. The players are the ones responsible. the coach put the players in the right positions to make plays, they did it all game, in the end the players thought they had it wrapped up and stopped executing.

Second, TC does not call the defense, Perry Fewell the defensive coordinator does. This article is not about him and everybody has said Perry has done a wonderful job in his first year. Quite a few teams are after him for head coaching positions as well.

Third, the onside kick was a borderline call for both coaches. There was no way of knowing what Andy Reid was doing and he even said if the Giants send out the hands team they would kick it away. TC didn't send the hands team but did tell the players to watch for the onside kick but they didn't.

Fourth, nobody including Coughlin blamed the punter for anything but the bad punt and ensuing TD. That last TD was mostly the punters fault because if he properly executed it would have been avoided and that is why dodge got chewed out like that. The loss was the entire teams fault. By the time the punter had to make that punt, the offense and defense had given up multiple opportunities to put the game away.

Are you Coughlin's wife?

YES! Tom. You tell 'em!

I thought that's what he tells the officials every time a call goes against the Giants.

he probably does...

I love Tom. He's old-school.

First class organization showed professional code by retaining a very good coach. And there are very few of them running free right now.. Replacing a very good coach with an unknown is risky. Specifically with the talent this team has. Are there changes that need to be made? Yes. But TC is not one of them. Line up critics.

I think he's one of the most entertaining NFL coaches in the league. I'm a Bears fan so, while I appreciate that our head coach is really "Zen", it's nice to see a coach get worked up once in awhile. Coughlin never disappoints in that regard.

Having Coughlin on the sidelines reminds me of a great Bobby Knight quote when he was fueding with LSU's head coach. Following a victory over the Tigers, Knight said "I was worried about losing until I looked down the floor and saw Dale Brown."

And a team that went unbeaten in their division is sitting at home wondering who their coach will be.

It's a thin line between the Giants being disappointing and the Bears being Super Bowl bound.

I remember years ago when the Texans beat the Giants.  The look on his face was priceless.  It was like he was thinking, "What's wrong with my team?!  What are they doing?!  NO!  NO!  NOOOOOO!!!"
10:49 AM on 01/07/2011
He's always got that look of disbelief when the giants are not performing. I find it hilarious.

Tom-

Are you turning hip-hop on us coach? That seems like a tweet-generation answer to legit questions.Your team slumped severely for the three years in a row in December, missing the playoffs. How does that not translate into lack of preparation?
You get a five year pass with the superbowl victory. Coach-do this. 1)Get the coach that reversed Tiki Barber's fumblitis to teach Bradshaw and Jacob to hold onto ball. Or get Tiki to give them the lessons. 2). Keep the defense the way it is, but strengthen the outside LBs 3). Get a third down back who can catch the ball from the backfield. 4). Get rid of McKenzie at T and use the first round pick (or move up) for the best possible T to protect Eli.

Nah, he just needs to talk Michael Strahan out of retirement.

They did a really good job protecting Eli this year (and most years) Eli was one of the least sacked QB's this year. They DO need to rebuild their O-line a bit though or at least add more depth. We had probably the best or one of the best O frontlines in the league until this beginning of year/end of last year when O'Hara started to break down. They're all getting a little old for the game diehl ohara seubert mckenzie all in thier 30's.

I also think the defense secondary in general needs conditioning. They ran out of gas in the philly debacle.
