UPDATE: A spokesman tells Amy Walter of ABC News that Dole was admitted to the hospital on Thursday but has since been released.

--

Bob Dole has been hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal. The former Senate majority leader and GOP presidential candidate's condition has not been released, but Dole spent "most of 2010 at the facility," the Capital-Journal reports.

A spokesman for the Dole Institute of Politics in Lawrence, Kan. tells the Associated Press that Dole was admitted to the facility on Thursday.

Bob Dole. A genuine conservative, as opposed to the radicals who currently overrun his party. As many here are saying, a guy who I could disagree with and still respect. And a genuinely witty guy. And a war hero who didn't always run around talking about being a war hero, unlike other politicians I could name.

Best wishes for a full recovery, Bob.

Best wishes for a quick recovery. Not a person I agree with very often politically...but an honest to God American hero, he is.

There was much about Mr. Dole's political philosophy that I didn't agree with, but he always took care of his beloved home state. For that, all Kansans should be grateful. I am. He almost single-handledly fought for the main business drivers in my part of the state -- and in no small part saved them from an even more disastrous fate at the hands of the then-lunatic Democratic party in power. Compared with this current crop of neanderthals running the GOP, he was the poster child of a "statesman." I wish for him and his family peace during what seems to be a time of transition.

He is 87 isn't he? Can't live forever and the average man lives until 73. Mr. Dole I do not agree with your politics, but your are anything but average and you have proved that. Good luck to you.

I sincerely wish him well. After his presidential run I actually got a chance to listen to him without the "handlers". He was pretty funny. I don't agree with his politics but he came off as a real decent guy. His kind of Republican is a thing of the past. Too bad.

Sad news... Bob Dole is a good role model for a great Statesman. Hope he pulls through.

Who would have thought I'd miss the days of the Bob Dole style republicans rather than this new, crazier iteration?

At least Bob Dole was a rational person I could disagree with...

Get well, Bob.

He was a Goldwater style Republican, but married to a Jesse Helms style Republican stained his legacy.

Not a fan of Bob Doles politics but I like the man himself, he has a sense of humor and we could really use that about now. Get well Senator.
