Peyton Manning Advised Andrew Luck To Return To Stanford

First Posted: 01/07/11 02:37 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Peyton Manning Andrew Luck

Oliver Luck, Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck's father, revealed to KTAR on Friday who helped his son make the decision to return to school for another year.

"He got advice not just from his old man or his mom but from people like Peyton Manning, Eli and others who've gone through it," he said. "That information and that advice of course is invaluable."

Oliver also explained that he and Archie Manning, Peyton's father, were teammates on the Houston Oilers.

"Peyton kind of acted like a mentor to Andrew," Luck's father said.

Manning was said to have told Luck about his experience in 1997 when he returned to Tennessee for his senior year.

Hmmm...a SEC icon providing advise to PAC 10 QB. Peyton was your agent in the room while "advising" him. Are you going to get a piece of the cut if Mr. Luck goes with your agent.

Advised him on how to choke in the playoffs. Tom Brady and Big Ben are better.

Both Mannings have a ring, I would take advise from them anyday if I were Luck.

Good for him. And, if the NFL doesn't pan out for him (i.e. Matt Leinart), he can always fall back on his Stanford degree. Although in Leinart's case, I think all the partying with co-eds in jacuzzi's got in the way of learning NFL playbooks.

Good call, Andrew. Best of Luck to you.

"advised?" - isnt that an NCAA violation? Deon Sanders was investigated after he "advised" players. What gives?

His dad didn't amount to much with the Oilers.  (Barely remember him.)  And he's now a club President for Houston's soccer team.  (Yeah, I know.  Soccer in Houston?)  If Andrew is like dear old dad, teams should be glad he's going to do another year rather than stink up the NFL right away.

Oliver Luck WAS with the Houston Dynamo. He is currently the Athletic Director at the University of West Virginia.

Maybe you may not remember much with the Oilers, but Oliver has a very successful career. When his family lived in Germany, he was President and CEO of NFL Europe. Here in Houston Oliver was CEO of Houston Sports Authority and oversought the construction of Minute Maid Park (Astros), Reliant Stadium (Texans), and the Toyota Center (Rockets). He left to become general manager of the Houston Dynamo. He is now the athletic director of West Virginia University his alma mater. I think his Dad amounted to a lot - he played for the NFL and became and executive for them.

big mistake. This is the real world. People are starving. You do not look a gift horse in the mouth so that you can have fun on week nights at the frat house. And please do not tell me how meaningful your education is. You can finish it off season over 2 years online if need be. He will not get that kind of lottery money offered again and he could very well be injured or simply have a poor season now that his offensive line is departing and fall way down in the rankings. A big, foolish and sentimental mistake.

I'm really wondering what starving people have to do with his decision to go back to finish his education. Was he going to feed them with his rookie money?

Ever think that that there are more important things than money? The kid's got a good head on his shoulders, and knows his priorities.

Ask Matt Leinart how that worked out. He's $20 million poorer as a result of the same decision. And no, money isn't everything - neither is an extra year in college.

Yup, keep him out of the Big 10.

With the current CBA expiring and talks about limiting rookie contracts in the new CBA, Luck is leaving perhaps tens of millions of dollars on the table. I can understand wanting to go back to school to win a title or get your degree but that's a lot of money. School isn't going anywhere and I don't know if a title is worth $20m or so.
03:38 PM on 01/07/2011
i think it is mature of him to finish what he started ( i mean school not football) he can go play in the pro's when he is done with sharpening his mind.
Bravo Luck, and good luck

Sharpening his mind? LOL Have you been to university? He's learning "facts" nothing more. It takes LIFE experience to gain wisdom, the rest is just information, nothing more.
04:06 PM on 01/07/2011
I agree, he can go back to school, many players do it. Plus, if Harbaugh leaves there is less chance he wins a title. He should come out, get drafted #1, get his money, and when his career is over be it 3 years or 20 years get his degree.
