Well done South Carolina. At least somebody cares about the enforcement of our laws.

The federal govt has abrogated their responsibility of controlling our borders and the states have have no choice but to assume responsibility or be saddled with the costs

Why the Hell would anyone want to come legally to the U.S., knowing that they have to spend twenty-plus years languishing on waiting lists for their chance? By the time they get close enough in the queue to consider moviung here, they will be too old, their whole lives will have passed them by while they waited to join relatives here. They will say "To hell with it" and I don't blame them one bit. Nobody from any decent First World industrialized society wants to immigrate to the U.S. anyway, they'd be lowering their living standards coming here.

The danger in legislation such as this is that it will be used a "setting precedents" and will ultimately affect "legal" residents and citizens as well.

• Require contractors to keep lists of subcontractors and sub-subcontractors at job sites, their addresses and phone numbers.
• Allow businesses to accept a U.S. passport, military ID or tribal ID card as legal proof of residency.
• Exempt from Freedom of Information laws the names of those who file complaints against businesses that employ illegal immigrants.

How will these effect legal residents? So now whistleblowers can be protected from intimidation and harrassment? People can use more legal government ID at a job? Now we know who is actually working on a jobsite; how is that bad?

The "effecting legal residents" is another straw man for the pro-illegal immigration crowd.

If you are a legal resident then what's the problem?
Illegals are the ones that are worried and should be. Why can't they come in legally like many others do every day ?

We accept more immiigrants than any country in the world. We have rules and quotas. We want peole who will follow the law and abide by our laws, when the illegals disregard our laws we do NOT WANT THEM HERE.

If you had the first clue of what you were talking about, you would not be asking such intelligence-devoid questions.

In case you are not aware of it, laws such as this are an open invitation to cops and "concerned citizens" to openly engage in illegal racial profiling and harassment. There have been thousands and thousands of cases of LEGAL immigrants being harassed, discriminated against, targetd, even illegally arrested and WRONGFULLY deported when they were here LEGALLY. For you to claim that "legal immigrants have nothing to worry about" is utter nonsense and a lie. You don't have a clue.

Small wonder that many, many LEGAL immigrants and LEGAL residents are moving out of ARYAN-Zona already, even though the blatantly unconstitutional SB1070 law has already been gutted like a landed fish by a federal district court judge.

Im seriously embarrassed that as a progressive liberal that the issue of illegal immigration is so poorly and illogically defended by those in the same camp. Listen to reason already. If you are here illegally then you do not belong here. This is very simple.

I'm a liberal/progressive and I'm upset that those in the same camp think nothing of having their fellow Americans sacrifice their livelyhoods, childrens education, access to social services for the sake of illegal aliens.

again I ask... if the federal government refuses to do their job and/or looks the other way what other option is there? the states need to take control if the feds refuse to do their job

on a side note just because something is unconstitutional hasn't stopped the federal government legislature from passing the law... they have passed unconstitutional laws in the past and it will continue...

Here comes more pushback against the "open borders" advocates and the "poverty wage" corporatists. I look forward to more states enacting legislation to protect citizens.

Right...... but they should target illegal immigrates.... confiscate all their belongings and then throw them out of the country.

I've noticed that, Mike. The "illegal" almost never shows up in reporting this sort of thing. If someone is here legally, hey, welcome to the US and hope you are able to achieve everything you want to. If you are here illegally, you need to be sent back and to do the process legally. It is that simple. People are tired of people flouting the laws and coming here just because they want to be here. I want all the illegals sent back...I don't care what country they come from: Mexico, Poland, the Reublic of Ireland...

Exactly.  And it infuriates me.  SC is portrayed badly enough as it is.  In some cases, justifiably.  But this addresses ILLEGAL immigration.  While I'm a very liberal Democrat, I (and my legal immigrant husband) stand strong against illegal immigration.  It's hard when you're abused and called names but I just will not back down on this issue.

The bill targets Illegal immigration, not legal. That almost always is left out of storys like this.
02:56 PM on 01/07/2011
Of course, it makes for a better headline than. Bill targets those in this country illegally.

Since the election a number of democrats have moved to align with republicans......
I wonder - after reading articles like this -- what is it in a person that makes them want to align with these policies?

What is it in a person that thinks that it is better policy to give tax breaks to millionaires while keeping unemployment pay from those in need (never mind that it is also a bigger benefit to the economy)?

What is it in a person that believes that in order to move forward - we need to move backward in time - to a time of less tolerance, more descrimination, less acceptance?

WHY are politicians willing to trade morals for votes?
05:35 PM on 01/07/2011
While I don't really disagree with you, that doesn't have much to do with this article. This is laws protecting legal residents and citizens, while dealing with those in this country illegally.

Have you thought of staying on the topic? The state of SC is implementing laws to protect it's citizens as are 22 other states this Jan 2011.
12:36 PM on 01/07/2011
Without ever mentioning civil rights these dixiecrat states are working hard to do go back to a time when African Americans were second class citizens. They do this by constantly attacking the federal government and trying to cast it as a foreign power making it easier for them to begin dismantling federal programs that help minorities. In their own states they use fear of racial and religious minorities to pass laws violating the civil rights of non-whites. They are hateful and vicious and they now have control of congress.
05:36 PM on 01/07/2011
These laws are effect those in this country illegally. This doesn't effect legal citizens, be it white, black, hispanic or anything else.

Go read the article it is not about stopping minorities, it is about stopping the illegal immigrants. The illegal is not a minority. THEY ARE ILLEGALLY IN THIS COUNTRY. Rant and rave about the topic at hand, the lawbreakers invading this land, the illegals. NOT ONE illegal should be able to get one social service from the federal gov, state gov or local gov. They don't belong here, they are lawbreakers. All social services should be only for American citizens. South Carolina is in the dixiecrat area, AZ is not and we were the first to put pro-American anti-illegals laws. 22 states are going to enter similar legislation in JAN 2011, they are from all over the usa not just the south. This legislation in S C has nothing whatsoever to do with African Americans except if you get rid of the illegals hundreds of thousands of African Americans will get back the jobs the illegals have stolen from them. ILLEGAL IS A CRIME NOT A RACE.

Countess is making the very basic and cogent point that it has EVERYTHING TO DO WITH RACE. If it ain't white, it ain't right. "In their own states they use fear of racial and religious minorities to pass laws violating the civil rights of non-whites" - of course the issue is illegal immigration but it really isn't about that at all. let's see how many illegal immigrants from croatia get stopped - and if you make the case, there aren't any or statistics say one thing, it doesn't matter....they're 'white' so they won't ever be bothered. maybe some day the hypocrisy of this will sink in.
