While Rep. Gabrielle Giffords remains in critical condition but alive in the wake of the tragic shooting in Arizona, the event claimed the lives of 6 others. Vigils have been held in their memory and this morning the White House observed a moment of silence.

You can find more information on the victims of Saturday's events below, courtesy of the AP.

This story is truly heart breaking. When you look at their photos you see children, parents and grandparents, that were innocent victims of this angry society. Those that stoked the fires of bigotry and hatred through ignorance, or for profit need to be held accountable. Words are powerful especially when said in a national venue. Perhaps we need to follow the lead of Canada. Recently Ann Coulter decided not to speak at a university after she was warned that she could be jailed if she did not watch her mouth. The hateful rhetoric would not be tolerated in Canada. Fox is not allowed to broadcast in Canada at all. The FCC needs to bring back the fairness in Media Doctrine. This behavior must be stopped and soon. When I think of these victims my heart aches. How long will America allow this extreme right- wing element to inflict pain on the innocent. How much longer do citizens have to fear harm, for simply disagreeing with the right. Of course they want to disavow any connection with this event. But it has to be evident to most people that the jargon of hate has taken on deeper meaning to those not mentally stable, they hear it as a call to action. Heaven help us!

The headline choked me up a little, together with the pictures. Touching, truly.

The loss of life is so sad. Thank goodness it has the effect of most people trying to have a real dialogue with each other. Also, thank God the survivors are doing well. One thing I don't understand on both left and right is the question of why people are angry. It appears they for the most part have jobs and are fairly well of-at least can pay their bills. Is their life so bad they look for things to be angry aboout? Is it easier to blame than look at how to work together as Americans. Why aren't people happy? Sure we have problems but it is the large corporations who did the damage. I am unhappy with politicians who put industry before jobs but we have only ourselves to blame. We bought into the free money myth. You want social security, medicare, wars then they have to be paid for. We have to demand legislation to take big money out of politics which is the only way to give them independence. Instead of blaming each other lets get legislation changed.

I feel deeply sadened by this whole thing..But i also feel sad that it has come to this and that the reasonse will not be honestly delt with. and the country slip further into its own collective mental illness. Denial is a tricky thing...it needs to be there to help us cope. but it also has a down side..too much and we don't fix the underlined problems...Our society is sick..many don't see it easily because its been a slow and steady process. How do we as a nation solve our problems hear and abroad? we WAR! we use violence..how do we get information out of our prisoners? WE torture..We condone it with our inaction to put a stop to it..How do we treat our people with mental issues and social issues..we abandon them and we remove funding..every politician that voted to do that is somewhat culpable in this tragedy..We have a society that worships corporate greed. and the gaming strategy of duplicity and dishonesty. Most Politicians get elected by smearing an opponent not on their own merit..its who can wage the most smearing campaign wins...Americans morn the loss of these people and do them a disservice if they chose denial as to the actual factual root causes...

Thank you for putting these images on your front page and honoring the memory of these people. So much better than the last front page, and much more appropriate.

Thank you for featuring the victims of this tragedy. In addition to their being the important element of this all, the mug shot of the shooter is enough to give one nightmares. Also, on an incredibly less important note, thank you so much to whomever fixed the headline from "more attention than him" to "more attention than he does."

We should also make sure we honor those heroes who saved lives. The wounded staffer who grabbed the clip. The aide who tackled him. The elderly husband who died trying to save his wife...God that one really got to me.

My parents are gone but I just imagined that this couple, who were about my parents age when they died, who lived a long lovely life together, were in their golden years but still cared about their community to come out and meet their Rep. This elderly man trying to sacrifice his life to save his beloved. It just tears my heart up.

These people died senselessly.
That's the fact of it.
We will mourn them, and then in a week or two people will forget and move on until the next tragedy.
What really needs to be done, is to put some legislation in place that will make this kind of stuff extremely difficult to execute. (no pun intended).
Too many senseless deaths by unbalanced or disgruntled individuals.
This has to stop.
Crying about it will not change it... action will.

Who should be held most accountable about this horror?

A schizophrenic?
The weapons industry?

I say the media and a government that fails to follow the Constitution.

The constant lies that the American people have been subjected to by the media and the government has caused a cognitive dissonance of how to interpret reality. It produces a climate of distrust and stressors that make people act out.
