New Polaroid Camera (PHOTOS): Lady Gaga Unveils GL30 Instant Digital Camera

First Posted: 01/10/11 01:11 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Pop queen Lady Gaga, dressed in large sunglasses and a black veil, unveiled a new Polaroid camera at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Lady Gaga was brought on by Polaroid to serve as Creative Director and co-design the company's Grey Label line of products.

She took the wraps off of a new digital camera (the GL30 instant digital camera), as well as two other products: Polaroid's GL20 camera glasses and a mobile printer (the GL10).

"I consider myself to be a visionary, not just a songwriter and a singer. I am an artist," said Lady Gaga in a press release. "I brought my vision and love of fashion, technology and obsession with the future into all of my work with Polaroid."

See photos of the new Polaroid camera below. Check out our full CES 2011 coverage here.

I admit that Lady Gaga is a far cry from Laurence Olivier introducing the original SX-70 camera (or less famously, Danny Kaye doing the same for the Polavision disaster) but the company does have a history of tapping celebrity to promote its products. Variable quality of spokespersons notwithstanding, it's good to see Polaroid creaking back into the game. I just hope the camera's build quality and specs are worthy of Dr. Land's legacy.

I always thought that in order to be an "artist" you had to have at least an ounce of talent.

Nope, there are many artist who have no talent, but they are able to make money.

Maybe Polaroid will get back in the business of making great instant film; impossible.

Yet another reason why Polaroid is going to fade away in the next 5 years. I know 3 or 4 people that enjoyed their Polaroid TVs going "pop" after 6 months.
12:53 PM on 01/11/2011
They make TV's? haha, they should stick with what they know... and unfortunately they can't even do that well enough to make good profits.

Now that most phones have a built-in camera with ok resolution, not much use for a stand-alone camera unless you want to take pro pictures.

This product will die a quick death. Cell phones pretty much killed the camera industry...

Not really. Here are Japan's camera makers' association's figured for 2009:
1. Track Record of Shipments in 2009
The total shipments of digital cameras in 2009 (the cumulative total of shipments from
January to December) reached 105.9 million units, exceeding the performance in 2007 for the
third consecutive year, when shipments broke through the 100 million unit mark for the first
time since CIPA began compiling statistics.
