Rex Ryan vs. Bill Belichick: 'It's Personal'

Rex Ryan Bill Belichick Its Personal

First Posted: 01/10/11 01:45 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Last week, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said that playing against Peyton Manning was personal. After advancing to the Divisional round in the NFL playoffs, Ryan has turned his attention to his next opponent, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

"This is about Bill Belichick versus Rex Ryan," Ryan told ESPNBoston on Monday. "There's no question, it's personal. It's about him against myself. That's what it's going to come down to."

In the Jets' last game against the Patriots on Dec. 6, they were blown out 45-3 in Foxborough on Monday Night Football.

"I recognize that I'm never going to be a better coach than him," Ryan said. "My job is to be a better coach than him this week."

Belichick responded to Ryan's comments via conference call.

"I might have a little quickness on him, he's probably got a little more strength and power on me," Belichick said. "I don't think you'll see either of us out there making any blocks, or tackles, or runs throws or catches. At least you won't see me doing that. It's probably a good thing for our team."

Belichick is a great coach, but I don't think his homeless chic is going to catch on.

Try as you might, Rex - the press will focus on the players particularly Brady and Sanchez and Sanchez will wilt under the pressure.

Blah! Blah! Blah!

I was at Shea Stadium when the Jets beat Oakland in 1968 for the AFL Championship.
In between, not so much fun. I have a game to watch this Sunday. A lot of NFL Teams can't say that. Playoff wins two years in a row. (Last time they did this Ken O'Brien was the QB.)
Rex can talk all he wants and have all the fetishes he wants.

Fine with me.

Ryan is full of himself, isn't he? Certainly full of bluster. A chip off the old block, clearly.

That Pats are clearly the better team, but that is why they play the games. One will win, one will lose. My money is on the Pats - hands down.

I'm not so sure that Pats are the better team, and I'm a Pats fan. I usually go to one game a year at the blade. Tickets are hard to come by, and Gillete isn't as comfortable as my couch. But I think Rex is right, it has to be the coaching and not just super B. The Pats are as banged up as anyone in the league and still keep winning. Wes Welker is the first to admit he is not his old self after knee surgery. Deon Branch was semi retired with the Seahawks and look at our defensive line. Wilfork aside, we don't have much, and still we shut teams down.

You go to one game - do you watch any of the others? Doesn't seem so.

"Bel i Cheat" has taken a bunch of has-beens, castoffs and rookies and made them the best team in football.
Remember Brady was a sixth round, back up QB until BB coached him.

So - I hear that many in the stands will be wearing some form of sandles so that Rex can have a field day with all the feet to stare at!!

He should be in heaven!

Now if the cheerleaders would go to sandles - he may never be able to focus on the game!

Pats fan & hate Jets like Brady, but gotta give Rex his due, he's a heckuva coach, very entertaining & he might be the second-best coach in the league behind Coach B. It's going to be much closer than last time; line's probably a little high over 8.

GO PATS!!!

He beat two teams with winning records during the regular season. I'm thinking the 2nd best coach in the league would win more than that.

And look at New Englands schedule. I thought they would be lucky to win 8 games.

I'm really getting tired of Rex running his mouth. I had no idea at the time that I'd say this less than two years later, but I'm actually glad we got rid of him in Baltimore. Look at the huge difference between him, and Harbaugh and Tomlin (sp?), the coaches of the Ravens and Steelers. Those guys are operating with class and showing nothing but mutual respect for their teams, and I hate to think that one of them is going to have to get into the mud with Rex if the Patriots fail to beat the Jets this week. I hope the Patriots beat the Jets handily just so I don't have to hear Rex run his mouth anymore.
