'Ninja' Bird, Xenicibis Xympithecus, Discovered With Weapon-Like Wings

Ibis

Is it a bird or a ninja? Okay, it's a bird. But scientists have found bones from this extinct creature that reveal it used its banana-shaped wings as weapons, similar to how ninjas use nunchucks.

Bones from Xenicibis xympithecus, a flightless Jamaican ibis bird, were recently found, as reported in Proceedings B of the Royal Society's journal. The five-pound bird was found to have hands with block-like fingers and thick palm bones, its hands comparable to a nunchuck or baseball bat. No other vertebrate in the world has been found with limbs modified to form clubs. After studying the wingbones, researchers believe that the bird used its wings as a weapon, swinging them at opponents like a club. There was no differentiation in wings between males and females, suggesting that both sexes engaged in fighting.

Modern ibis birds are known for fighting, especially during nesting and feeding, when they must protect their territory. The bird can grip an opponent with its beak and strike with its wings. Other birds that whack opponents with their wings include swans and geese - some geese even have spurs on their wings to add a little punch...no pun intended.

But there's no other vertebrate out there with swinging club wings, and as researcher Nicholas Longrich puts it, "As a biologist it's sort of cool to find something and be able to say, 'Wow, I haven't seen that one before.'" Maybe he never watched "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."

They also found an evolutionary offshoot that not only had limbs evolved as clubs, but a special appendage to hold cans of beer. They inhabited what appears to have been an early form of trailer park.

The ninja were, essentially, covert agents in feudal Japan. They probably leaned towards small, easily-concealed, and silent weapons (knives, garottes) as opposed to large, difficult to conceal, and difficult to wield instruments. Perhaps a better description would have been Visigoth bird.

Like 99% of all species that have ever existed.

humans killed off 99% of all species ever? I wouldn't go that far.

But they certainly were a death sentence for 90% of terrestrial megafauna in the late Pleistocene to early Holocene- or later, when it took them a while to arrive on islands like Australia, Wrangel, Catalina Island, or New Zealand.

Um... so if the birds are flightless, that means that picture up there isn't of them. Isn't it better to have no picture at all?

Ok Americans, wake up, you don't even look up in the sky. I live in California and birds, bees, small animals are DYING OFF LIKE FLIES. Why, they can not live in the Barium, Aluminun, Chaff, Fine plastic that is used to make artifical clouds in the sky, BY THE MILITARY. The jets are retro fitted NOZZELS with huge containers in the jet that spew it all over the world DAY AND NIGHT. And you think this is good for you, DO YOUR CHILDREN HAVE ASTHMA OR IMMUNE PROBLEMS. Well guess what their next. I am heart broken for all the birds and animals dying. Comtrails dissipate right away, watch how the trail lingers after spraying, and how it turns into fiber falling on all underneith. DON'T JUST READ THIS, COMPLAIN, AND DON'T GIVE UP. GOD GAVE YOU A BEAUTIFUL PLANET, WILD BIRDS, ANIMALS, SO AT LEAST FIGHT FOR THEM.

Exactly why would the military make artificial clouds above CA? I understand saudis make them to get rain in the desert, but why in CA?

Ninja didn't really use clubs.  But pirates did, so maybe they can call it a pirate bird?
