UPDATE: Want to learn more about the Verizon iPhone? Here's everything you need to know.
--
At a press conference in New York City, Verizon CEO Lowell MacAdam announced that the iPhone 4 will be available on Verizon's network starting February 2011.

A 16GB version of the iPhone 4 will cost $200, with a two-year contract. Apple's smartphone will launch on Verizon on February 10th of this year, with pre-orders for existing Verizon customers starting on February 3rd. The Verizon iPhone will offer a mobile hotspot to which up to five devices can be connected. However, the iPhone will not run on Verizon's new, ultra-fast 4G LTE network, and, as with all CDMA phones, users will not be able use data while on a call, which means no browsing the web while you're talking on the phone.

"We've been looking forward to today for a long time," said Apple COO Steve Cook, who joined MacAdam onstage, according to Engadget.

MacAdam said, "Our relationship with Apple has developed over the last two years. In 2008 we started talking about bringing the iPhone to a CDMA network. We spent a year testing."

Critics--among them Verizon rival AT&T--have expressed doubts that Verizon's network has the capacity to withstand the additional burden from millions of iPhone users.

Verizon's Dan Dee emphasized the robustness of the network during "Big Red's" press conference. "We're ready for this launch," he said. "Our iPhone 4 customers will get a terrific wireless experience."

Wow. How lucky I don't browse the web while I'm talking to someone. How rude.

Everything adds up to the rumor finally being true. Thank God, I couldnt be happier! After so many misleading articles, and so many rumors and gossip, its finally here!
Very nice, Can't wait to pick one up.
but no 4g? Every Android phone coming out has been taking advantage of each network's 4g capabilities. This may hurt Apple. I mean... I wouldn't want to stick to a 3g phone for the next 18-20 months.
Hmm, maybe we could read some difference on iPhone 4 and 3G: http://www.ifunia.com/iphone-column/index.html
Hope the 4G newtwork launch soon!!!!!!!!!

So when do the "iPhone comes to T-Mobile" rumors start?
03:30 PM on 01/11/2011
I think i'll wait. First I want to see the pricing on Verizon plans for the iPhone and second, I want to hold out until they release a phone that runs on the 4G network (i enjoy being able to talk and surf at the same time). One thing is for sure, I will not be buying any more phones for AT&T's network. I currently have the 3GS and my contract is up at the end of the year.
06:05 PM on 01/11/2011
Haha. My husband took his AT&T service Blackberry to the inauguration and could not get one call out for the entire week. He went on a business trip to Chicago and could not call me once here in Denver. Mitchell, South Dakota, Albuquerque, N.M., and so forth and so on ad infinitum--also busts. Then he switched to an AT&T IPhone because he really had to have an IPhone, whether he could actually use it to make phone calls or not. So when he went to a Broncos game recently in downtown Denver, he had to borrow my kid's junky Verizon phone to call me and tell me how bad the game was. And sometimes when he tries to make phone calls from our house (normal Denver suburb area) he has to go outside to get service. Frankly, I'm thinking he's lucky he hasn't had to climb on the roof.

So let me tell you, regardless of price, and regardless of whether you can surf and talk at the same time, this is still, as Joe Biden said, "a big f&*king deal!"

Well I guess I would too if my reception was THAT bad. It's not quite that bad....so I think I can put up with the dropped calls for a little longer....heck i've dealt with them for three years already!

You mean I don't have to see the silly non-stories on the front page of the tech section about it anymore after today? HOORAY *goes out and buys a Droid instead*

I'll pass on it. Thanks!

If I switch from my droid to an iphone, will I have to start over on Angry Birds? If so, it's a deal breaker.
02:57 PM on 01/11/2011
Angry Birds?! No big deal. Now restarting Cat Physics would be a real problem ...
04:15 PM on 01/11/2011
But no ads for Angry Birds.

Before you start celebrating, you should note that this is the exact same iPhone 4 that was released last summer.

And when it comes time for the iPhone 5 to be released in June it will have some kind of new feature that is already available in other phones, such as 4G radios, dual-core processors, etc.

Essentially you will pay twice for the same thing, and even more so when you break your At&t contract. And when this iPhone is released to Verizon, almost one year later, it will have to compete with dual-core phones, with bigger screens and 4g technology right out of the box.

In this scenario, short-term profit trumps long-term loyalty. Those that sign a Verizon contract will be presented with a brand new iPhone, just 4 months later. A fitting start to their future role's as iOS whipping posts.

In this day and age, if one clings on to technology that is 6-month old, one is already behind. If you were to wait for the next best thing, you'd be waiting constantly and will never get to enjoy any of the technology.

fanned and faved!!!!! amen to that! I have said the same thing when people told me I should wait til 2011 to get the iPad 2 when I got the iPad in November..for me I waited long enough and the need for it then outweighed the waiting for a possible camera addition...glad I got it in November and havent regretted it...and when I switch to the iPhone I will have done the same research I did with the iPad so that I know what I am getting.and make an informed decision

Thank you! People make me feel like a schmo because I've missed my iPhone for 2 years since I moved out of an AT&T area and I just want the damned thing back. I don't care if the new iPhone 5 gives me infinity orgasms at this point.
02:42 PM on 01/11/2011
Will my iPhone 4 blow up when the iPhone 5 is release? When the Droid Bionic? No? Then why should I care what new phones are released if my phone is doing what I need it to do?

Why would my phone need to "compete" with other phones? What do I get if my phone "wins"?

"Then why should I care what new phones are released if my phone is doing what I need it to do?"

Because that is Apple's business model, probably best explained by this cartoon:

http://theoatmeal.com/comics/apple

It is a combination of image and keeping up with the Jonses taken to the extreme and it is all promoted because this device is used as a personal status symbol and fashion accessory.

To all the android fanboys.

We get it.

You like your phone.

The iphone is still better.

Maybe in 10 years the android will be better, but right now it still has a long way to go.

What you see as "apple control", many of us consider a good thing.

I don't want to have to "root" my phone to get it to work with my exchange server, and because I work for a big company, my network admin might not even let me root my phone and still allow it on the network.

I don't need to let 15 apps all run on my phone at the same time. All that does is slow everything down.

I don't want to have to worry about whether a phone that is designed by motorola is going to be able to run the same apps that a phone designed by samsung can run.

Personally, unless google can create a standardized version of their android OS that runs on all devices, I see the Android ended up like Unix did, where all of the "flavors", each with their own specific requirements, make development on the platform a nightmare, because developers can't create just one app that runs on all platforms, they are going to have to write code and test on every single device.

An app on the iphone just works, on all devices.

I can't wait to finally get the best phone on the best network.

"I don't need to let 15 apps all run on my phone at the same time. All that does is slow everything down."

Android uses the exact same multitasking method as iOS. The only real difference is that it allows third party developers to run apps as background services. These services, such as tasker which lets you automate phone functions based upon your location or which way the phone is being held, actually add a pretty awesome amount of utility. Very few apps do this though, most are, like iOS, suspended in memory when not in immediate focus.

"Personally, unless google can create a standardized version of their android OS that runs on all devices,"

There is, It is called Android. Just because Samsung changes the SMS app to add chat bubbles and HTC makes a new launcher doesn't mean that there isn't the exact same API running underneath, because there is.

That is why the myth about App compatibility is bogus. The Apps you write are compatible across every single phone that has an API level >= than the one you chose to write your App in.

App interfaces are written in XML and the SDK allows you to see them in any screen size you happen to choose.

The only time there is real fragmentation is when phones are not upgraded to the latest SDK version because they simply don't have the processor power and memory to handle them.

((( "Just Like How Countless Apps Using The Retina Display Will Not Function On Any IOS Device Prior To The Iphone4" )))

I have not seen, nor heard, of a single instance of an iOS app that only works on devices with a Retina Display. Since you claim that there are "countless" such apps, perhaps you'd care to name a few?

This is projection on your end. For the entire time I've had an account here, this tech section has been a play ground for Apple Cultists hemming and hawing about how great their new toy is, only to watch them throw a fit when someone says otherwise. The fact that you now and attack Android users for the same thing is comical.

The irony is always lost on those ones.

Just like the two above that claim that the iPhone is in no way considered a status symbol.

I'm a little surprised at the $199 price tag.  Thats usually what Verizon sells their car charger and case packages for. :)

I have had three generations of iTouch models, including the newest generation. It is beautiful. Also,I have always wanted an iPhone but never wanted both an iTouch and an iPhone (I need 64 GB because I have 8,000 songs).

However, I have been a Blackberry enthusiast forever, and don't think I can bring myself to switch phones. I'm still happy my carrier has the iPhone, though.

Pretty soon, I'll be able to count AT&T's customers on one hand.
