Divorce by Race and Ethnicity: Who Reports The Most?

The U.S. Census Bureau's 5-Year American Community Survey polled 3 million households between January 1, 2005 and Dec. 31, 2009 to determine statistical portraits of smaller communities within the United States--including races and ethnic groups--based on a variety of factors, including divorce. These numbers are not rates--rather, they indicate what percentage of each population reported being divorced over a fixed period in time, not including those that were divorced and have since remarried. Here's the breakdown, as defined by the American Community Survey.

What kind of stats are these? First they report that black women have a 70% unwed mother rate. If that's true then black folks are not the second highest for divorces. Many white people are on their 2,3,4+ marriages with blended families. This article is a farce!

Is it too mush to ask that we all just be Americians. Can we as a people finally see that everything is not black and white but shades of grey.Do we have to unquestionably agree with one side or the other or can we like or dislike some things on both sides of the isle. Can a person change there mind after being swayed by a good argument or the will of the majority of the people without being considered weak.Must we always be on a side to begin with and just be Americans.There is alot of evil out in the word and yet it seems we direct all are anger far to often at our fellow Americans. If we are to come out of this time of darkness we need to do it together as one people. We don't always have to agree we we should always respect and work with all the people of our great nation.

I have known couples to be separated for 25 years, but never divorced; how do you account for these people? There are people who live together for 25 years and never marry.

Exactly.

That's why any conclusion should come after a qualitative analysis - numbers help setting the stage with basic demographics (although, as I mentioned before, "ethnicity" is not as clear cut a variable as age, income, etc, and thus prone to inaccurate results) but the sociological conclusions have to be based on a more than statistics.

Me too. The stats a 50% divorce rate in this country isn't true either. Researchers truly need to go back to the drawing board. Stop interviewing 20 people and calling it a sound report.

Why is marriage heralded as a sign of being "right" and stability and even love? Most married people I know are not happy. Content and stable, yes, but not happy. There are exceptions, I know.
I just don't get it.

Don't they need to know the percentages of people living together in committed relationships or ones with children, however you would define those arrangements? 
 
If, for example, American Indians and Alaskan natives don't 'live together' in as great a percentage as, say, whites and they have a higher marriage rate, then their higher divorce rates would make more sense.  Say whites, who 'live together' in a higher percentage than those 2 other groups, split up, they aren't counted in the divorce rates.

Let me say this, in my former career, I did business with a high percentage of Asians, specifically Chinese. From my observations, the women seemed to take a back seat in the transactional process. I did have a couple of Asian cllients married to white males who were clearly more assertive, and in one case was The Decision-maker. She seemed to wear the pants. I had a good Asian female friend who--unfortunately left this world via lung cancer--was actually recovering using her non-chemo therapy, holistic strategy...But her husband was so adamant that she use chemo, she relented and within two months she was gone.

Well, I was just curious...I'm not drawing any conclusions.
