Huffington Post     First Posted: 01/13/11 11:52 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Monday, January 17 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and there are lots of ways to celebrate and honor the life of one of America's most influential leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. Los Angeles is celebrating with parties and parades this weekend to commemorate Dr. King and his legacy, but Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not just a day of remembrance. Since Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act in 1994, the holiday has also become a national Day of Service. We've included both celebrations and opportunities to serve in remembrance of Dr. King.

Celebrate this national Day of Service by giving back to your community in ways that interest you. Anyone with an interest in flying or in learning more about the world of planes should head to Tomorrow's Aeronautical Museum to take part in its Operation Hangar Cleanup. Volunteers will clean, paint and prepare the hangar at TAM's STEM lab, which will encourage students to learn about topics like plane engineering, wind tunnels, and video game design.
