WikiLeaks: Bradley Manning To Receive $15,000 For Defense

Bradley Manning

01/13/11 01:10 PM ET   AP

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Supporters of the Army private suspected in one of the biggest security breaches in U.S. history say WikiLeaks has fulfilled its pledge to aid in his defense by contributing $15,100.

The Bradley Manning Support Network announced the gift Thursday.

Jeff Paterson of the affiliated group Courage to Resist in Oakland, Calif., says the contribution brings the total raised for Pfc. Manning's defense to more than $100,000 but is still short of the $115,000 needed.

Manning is being held in maximum security at a Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va., awaiting a possible trial.

He has not commented on military charges that he illegally obtained more than 200,000 State Department cables and gave classified material to an unauthorized person.

“Manning had to choose between being complicit in these atrocities, or not. At the age of 21, he made a brave choice -- to put human rights before his own interests. He found the classified military documents revealing the US was covering up the deaths of 15,000 Iraqis and had a de facto policy of allowing the Iraqis they had installed in power to carry out torture -- and he decided he had a moral obligation to show them to the American people. To prevent the major crime of torturing and murdering innocents, he committed the minor crime of leaking the evidence. He has spent the last seven months in solitary confinement -- a punishment that causes many prisoners to go mad and which the US National Commission on Prisons called "torturous." He is expected to be sentenced to 80 years in jail at least. The people who allowed torture have faced no punishment at all” - Johann Hari

$15,000 to his defense will certainly get him the chair!
$15,000,000 will get him few years in prison!
$150,000,000 will set him FREE!
It has to do with the US Court Systems where LAWYERS win LOTTERIES with judges who are Ex-Lawyers!!!!!!!!!

Trial. 40 years in SuperMax. This would be a fair resolution to this entire Manning debacle.

So how's that "queue" moving along where our comments go to languish interminally? What's the malfunction; short handed, comprehension challenged, or are "the usual suspects" comments just shunted into limbo for their past enthusiasm?

He will probally get a military lawyer. No need for a defense fund.

Any possibility of getting my comment posted while I'm still alive? The process of "moderation" is increasingly infuriating in its delay.

“While we were all fixated on Julian Assange, the story of the young American soldier who actually leaked the classified documents passed almost unnoticed. If Manning was mentioned at all, it was as to be described an impetuous, angry kid who downloaded the documents onto a CD and leaked them as a result of a "grudge" or "tantrum."

Here's what really happened. Manning signed up when he was just 18 believing him would be protecting and defending his country and the cause of freedom. He soon found himself sent to Iraq, where he was ordered to round up and hand over Iraqi civilians to America's new Iraqi allies, who he could see were then torturing them with electrical drills and other implements. The only "crime" committed by many of these people was to write "scholarly critiques" of the occupation or the new people in charge. He knew torture was a crime under US, Iraqi and international law, so he went to his military supervisor and explained what was going on. He was told to shut up and get back to herding up Iraqis.

Well, that's what happens to citizens who are uninformed, or misinformed by our co-opted Fourth Estate, the press. We are lied to consistently, and misinformed about what is being done, or allowed, in our names; the killings of tens of thousands. Justice Lewis Brandeis said "sunshine is the best disinfectant"; the free dissemination of accurate unvarnished information and truth, and in this case the abuse and torture of "enemies", that runs counter to everything America is supposed to stand for; what we are ostensibly fighting for. We are all diminished by "classified" policy and actions that violate human rights law and common decency designed to further military policy and hide the truth, as we are by the indefensible and brutal way this principled person, Manning, is being treated.

Awfully sure of yourself and opinions aren’t you? That seems to be the general mindset of the so-called (self-proclaimed) “patriot” and right-wing pundits and their sheep; a divisive “my way or the highway” thought process that seems to rule out either new or accurate/substantiated information on issues, in favor of pronouncements based on a co-opted biased/controlled press, a narrow-minded interpretation of history (or total ignorance), current events, our Constitution, and the nature of for-profit manufactured wars that are costing our nations civilian priorities trillions in wasted/squandered (crony profits for the Military Industrial Complex and well-connected) resources.
