Kelsey Grammer Opens Up About Divorce, Kids On Letterman (Video)

First Posted: 01/14/11 08:39 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Kelsey and Camille Grammer's divorce is getting nasty, but it isn't impacting the kids, Kelsey says.

Kelsey sat down with David Letterman on Thursday night and gave a glimpse into his rocky home life. With he and his now ex-wife Camille battling in the courts -- Camille wants $50 million after Kelsey cheated on her and filed for divorce, but doesn't want the divorce to happen immediately -- the former 'Frasier' star said that all is well with the kids.

In fact, his current fiancee, Kayte Walsh, has even been spending time with them, and really his son's biggest problem isn't his parents -- it's his hatred of reading.

Which is quite the problem, since he wants to be an actor like his dad. Grammer recently introduced Kayte and Camille, to awkward results.

Kelsey is finishing a year long run in La Cage aux Folles, a role Camille on Wednesday said excited him -- because, she insinuated, he likes to cross-dress.

I am so sick of everyone's obsession with celebrity. Why do talk shows even exist? I don't want to know you outside the characters you play. Some walk around with their head in the air as if they can't make eye contact with a person outside of their chosen profession for fear they may melt. Ahhh the last time I checked we are all human being's made up of flesh and bone. It says in the Bible not to put oneself up on a pedestal. It is dangerous to idolize and be idolized. Let's see, a piece of equipment called a film camera, films a person acting out a character and then projects that film onto a large screen and that image on the screen becomes what? God? It is a human being. No better or worse then other...human beings....Let's stop the insanity. Take a #. Get at the back of the line with the rest of us. Hush and read your lines. Entertain us and call it a night. I meet far more interesting people in every day life then anyone that is splashed on the cover of the tabloids.Yet we keep buying these magazines, soiling ourselves with the soot. It is a shame that as a society we have stooped so low and allowed entertainers to consume us; influence our choices in what we wear, how we speak, etc. I respect the one's that harness the attention for the good.

Actors are contractually obligated to sell their movies. That is what talk shows are for. Corporations control our lives. They pay celebs big money to sell their crap. Who could pass up a million dollars or more to do a few commercials or print ads wearing someones clothes?? It isn't their fault, its the way it is set up wayyyy before they get there.

Gossip mags make millions and millions of dollars buying pics of celebs and putting them in their magazines, and then making up full stories out of bits and pieces of information...mostly untrue. They carefully craft the wording to avoid getting sued. Its how the game is played. I think it is the biggest drawback of being a successful actor. You get millions of dollars and live a fabulous lifestyle, but you have to live with NO privacy, and constantly being maligned in the press.

Before you blame all of us for this system, you have to follow the money to find who is really responsible.
02:57 AM on 01/18/2011
...if you read carefully I didn't blame ALL of them...or even any of them. I was blaming all of society,"we", for being celebrity obsessed. Although your argument?...just proves my point; we shouldn't buy tabloids etc.

I guess this doesn't apply to celeb's that sell pictures of their own babies to the magazines. Children who have no say in the matter.

If you think about it, people control the corporations. If a celeb slips up and does something in their private life that the public/consumers don't appreciate, it could cost them their endorsements, their contracts, etc.

Hey I love movies. They are a favorite past time. But I am appreciating the performance that may have made me laugh or cry. The writing and yes I even stay and watch the credits, knowing that it takes an enormous amount of effort both in front of and behind the camera, before it gets to the point when I can watch it with my big over- priced bucket of popcorn. I just don't get the obsession with the celebrity aspect of it. Maybe because I grew up in L.A. and maybe because my father's a stage actor.

I think it's interesting that people get on Camille's case about speaking out about what Kelsey did to her. "What about the children?"..."protect the children". Oh please get real. Any spouse who has been cheated on or emotionally abused has a right to speak out about it. The children already know. As long as both parents continue to love them, they will not break. This is not the dark ages where women are expected to crawl up in a ball and let the man wag his tail as if he should suffer no consequence for his actions. Kelsey had the adulterous affair while married to his children's mother and yet she is expected to suffer in silence. It is similar to a woman who is abused physically. She is advised to take back her power by confronting the abuser. In this case she was emotionally abused. In a marriage you are suppose to be able to rely on your spouse to have your back. The one person who should be there for you. I guess he feels if he provides the lifestyle that his money can afford, the rules don't apply to him. That's probably why he marries woman that are so young and have less. So that he can call the shot's. Just like a predator. They prey on their vulnerabilities. Why does this man even get married? He has no respect for it's meaning. Leave marriage to the adults Kelsey.

I completely disagree. Maybe marriage to Camille had lost all enjoyment...is he supposed to waste what years he has left when he doesn't want to be with her anymore?

For some, marriage is forever. For others, not so much. So what? Why make morality based on the length of a relationship? Life is short and you might as well get as much enjoyment out of it as possible. These aren't regular 9 to 5 people either. Actors are separated from their spouses for long periods of time, and that results in many relationships just growing apart. I think it is ridiculous to hate them or to judge them for it. Unless you have walked 100 miles in their shoes, you don't know anything about why they do what they do.
03:11 AM on 01/18/2011
I respectfully disagree. An occupation shouldn't be an excuse for bad behavior and adultery. I didn't generalize actors or single them out for such behavior but as long as YOU did...I hope not all actors have such low expectations of themselves. That's too simple an excuse.

No one mentioned anything about "hate" either. Those are your words.I am free to have my opinion as you are yours.
02:24 PM on 01/16/2011
Isn't surprising that he chose Letterman's show for his first interview since his adulterous affair began. They are both adulterers. This type of behavior has become all too common place and acceptable in Hollywood. They get talk shows and hit series. It's disgraceful and shouldn't be tolerated. We would shun a man that physically abused his wife but emotional abuse and humiliation toward his wife, not to mention his children, have no conscience. This is marriage #4 for him. He moves on and starts anew instead of working things out. "Oh but we're in love"...grow up. So indulgent. A "new girl" and another set of children to ruin. Pro-athletes have clause's in their contracts requiring them to adhere to a code of ethics. Actors should too. Interesting that Camille was 29 years old when they married. I guess that age agrees with him. He did an interview back in 2004 on Jon Stewart. Jon asks him if he plans to take anything from the set of Frazier, being that the show was taping its final season after 11 years in prime time. He says no, "there's no place in my life for that", stating that he is not sentimental. That's very telling of his nature. He treated his marriage in the exact same manner; just left his wife and children...Next, take #2. In his case take #4. "Quiet on the set! Kelsey Grammer take 4!"

Life is hard enough without constantly judging people for their private lives. You have no idea what was going on in their marriage. I am so sick of the term adulterer. A scarlet letter A. How 1600's of an idea is that!?! Let he or she who is without sin cast the first stone.

I'm an atheist, but its a good quote. No one forced her to marry him, and she knew she was his third...there are no guarantee's in life. When people stay together for the kids, when they are unhappy, that does more damage. I lived that one, and know it first hand. Children know how their parents feel about each other...sometimes you just can't make it better. At least Camille gets around 50 million bucks to dry her tears. I'm sure she won't be single for long...
03:27 AM on 01/18/2011
I here you and you're right. If what Camille is saying is true it just seems so cold, but there are two sides to every story....and frankly why should I care.

As far as the 1600's...an adulterous woman would have been executed lawfully. So as history proves, woman have received the short end of the stick. I don't let modern age dictate principles. I think there is something beautiful about tradition. I also believe in Bible principles. They are there to protect us.
01:59 PM on 01/16/2011
Of course the nasty divorce isn't impacting the kids; they are always with their nannies.

Don't forget what kind of a guy Kelsey is - he is a right wing zealot who thinks Fox News needs help, so he helped bankroll and launch the (so far failing) "Right Network" last summer. This is just another fine example of those exemplary "family values" that the right is so proud of. Maybe Kelsey and Newt Gingrich can get together and compare notes.
01:50 PM on 01/17/2011
I bet Kelsey is Republican for tax reasons. Rich people that don't want to pay their fair share. They live in a country that allows them to get disgustingly rich, and then they complain about their taxes.

Whoopie Goldberg complains regularly about her taxes. She says she works hard for her money and its unfair. My husband has worked 80 hours per week for most of our 30 years together, and he works hard for his money. We used to be middle class, but we are slipping. Doing a one hour talk show 4 times a week can't be nearly as difficult as running a factory.

Where can I find that right network?

Thoughts on clip: I think 6 is a bit too old to not know how to read. And I think I'd be mortified if my dad was discussing that to the whole world. And the use of the word "better" in referring to Grammer's new romantic situation is insensitive to Camille, whatever you may think of her. Grammer comes across as a terrible person, which I've always suspected he was.

I can see why he had the affair. He married Camille when he was a big TV star. He's not a big TV star any more. Now he's a medium theater star. So he needs a new downsized wife for his new downsized career expectations. It's probably too much for his pride to stay with the woman who was by his side back when he was a huge hit.

Or maybe that woman is just unbearingly insufferable and impossible to live with.

As anyone who has seen her on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills could attest.

Got that right! And yet some men still don't get it. What I'm about to say will only register with people who read the Bible. Divorce in most religions is frowned upon. It is only when a spouse has been abused or cheated on that it is granted. In the eye's of God then it seems that it is taking very seriously and considered a form of abuse. For anyone that has ever been cheated on by their spouse, haven't you ever wondered why it is so painful and hard to accept. Our bodies and heart reject the feeling like poison. It is because we were not intended to be able to cope with this type of pain. Gods principles are there to protect us. Kelsey claims he is religious. I would like to know what religious leader has been influencing his choices.
02:15 PM on 01/17/2011
There are worse crimes than cheating on your spouse, no matter which one does it. Cheating is always a symptom of bigger problems in the relationship. The divorce rate in this country is somewhere in the 70% range of all marriages. Clearly there are many problems in many relationships, I don't think anyone has the answer for everyone. Life is complicated and so are relationships. Everyone navigates life differently, but being so judgemental is clearly not helping anyone.
