BETHESDA, Md. — A medical center spokeswoman says former Peace Corps director and vice-presidential nominee R. Sargent Shriver has been hospitalized outside Washington.

Ronna Borenstein of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda said Sunday evening that she could not comment on the 95-year-old Shriver's condition or say when he was admitted.

Shriver announced in 2003 that he had Alzheimer's disease. He served as the first Peace Corps director in the administration of his brother-in-law, President John Kennedy. He also was Democrat George McGovern's running mate in 1972.

Shriver's wife and Special Olympics Founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver died in 2009 at age 88. He is the father-in-law of former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is married to former NBC reporter Maria Shriver.

My earlier comment about Sargent Shriver never posted. He is a great man who accomplished great things for our nation against great odds - the Congress of the USA and President Johnson's war intentions that took all dollars that could have been used for far better purpose.

HuffPost ought to do an article on Mr. Shriver -- many Americans don't know much about him, if anything at all. And that's a real shame. His story would be inspirational, aspirational.

Shriver's good works speak for themselves. The planet is definitely a better place because of him.

Best wishes for a rapid recovery Mr Shriver.  This man's peaceful vision of bringing real hands on aid to the developing nations is a clear statement of integrity and honesty.  A truly great man and humanitarian.

Good luck, Mr. Shriver. You're a hero in my eyes and the eyes of many, the true embodiment of what it means to be a Democrat.

If you want a Top 10 list representing the Best of America, the Peace Corps certainly deserves to be on there somewhere. Thanks to you, Mr. Shriver, for bringing a noble idea to life.

I hope for the best for this great man. Well I remember his lobbying in Congress to begin the Peace Corps. Richard Nixon had loudly and inaccurately denounced the idea as "a haven for draft dodgers." When Shriver became this now long successful agency's first director he happily traveled the world visiting Peace Corps installations. As he bumped over rough terrain in jeeps he beamed that the "had the best job in the government." This is a Democrat of the finest quality-and that is saying something.

This is a truly great man and it's sad that he has to suffer such a long and slow decline.
