Camden, NJ, One Of America's Most Dangerous Cities, Lays Off Half Of Its Police Force

Camden Layoffs

Budget pain hit home in Camden, N.J., on Tuesday, as nearly a sixth of city employees lost their jobs in one of America's most dangerous cities, AP reports.

The layoffs are just the latest consequence of devastating budget strains that have crippled the nation's cities. As Camden attempts to cut spending to compensate for diminished revenue, the city has begun to execute a plan, approved last month, to cut a fourth of the municipal workforce. Residents fear the cuts will deal a critical blow to the already struggling city.

About 335 municipal workers lost their jobs Tuesday, according to mayor Dana Redd. That includes about half of the police force, and a third of firefighters. Already, Camden is one of the nation's most dangerous cities: An analysis of recent FBI data ranks it number two.

Layoffs will turn Camden into a "living hell," according to a police union advertisement in a local paper, AP reports.

While Camden faces severe challenges, it's hardly alone. After the worst financial crisis since the Depression, the nation's cities have seen their revenue wither. As enormous pension obligations come due -- one estimate places the unfunded liabilities of city pension plans at $574 billion -- cities are having to make cuts that seemed unthinkable just half a decade ago.

As Camden lays off workers, nearby Newark is dealing with the effects of having fired more than 13 percent of its police force late last year. A recent spike in crime has left many Newark residents worried that the layoffs have made their city more dangerous. The city contends, though, that re-deployments have ensured that the same number of officers are patrolling Newark's streets.

Outside of New Jersey, other cities have also resorted to seemingly desperate measures. Prichard, Alabama, has illegally stopped paying its pensioners. Hamtramck, Mich., has repeatedly tried to enter bankruptcy. Detroit is considering a plan that would deprive a fifth of its city of basic municipal services, like trash collection and police protection.

As cities are forced to make tough choices, officials tend to cast public unions in a negative light. Redd, the Camden mayor, said public employe unions' refusal to accept a pay cut made layoffs necessary. But unions resist such talk.

"We get paid to do a service, and we do that service very well," Gregory Floyd, president of the New York City local division of the Teamsters union, told the Huffington Post. "We're not rich, we don't retire rich, and we don't have lucrative pensions."

"Detroit is considering a plan that would deprive a fifth of its city of basic municipal services, like trash collection and police protection." Pretty soon they'll sell themselves over to Omni Consumer Products paving the way for RoboCop.

Residents of Camden should fix their own problems instead of begging for handouts. Civilization has survived, and thrived, with much less than what Camden has available to it today. Citizens should create their own police force. Go door to door and target the thugs and gang bangers.

Riiiight... How do you suppose these civilian police forces will train and arm themselves? How about body armor? Those vests aren't cheap.Go door to door and target the thugs and gang bangers? Yeah, that's one way to get yourself killed. Why don't you try it and let us know how it works out?

They probably think that they shouldn't raise taxes because that would scare off business. But, how many businesses are going to re-locate to a city that is so crime ridden?

Before people blame Mayor Reed or the police, understand the system of corruption existed long before this day arrived. My grandfather pastors one of the churches in Camden that was shown in a documentary by Arthur Fennell and he has been in the city of Camden for 35 years. His quote about Camden is that when it comes to politics, "Camden isn't a political problem, it's a moral problem." The state funneled millions of dollars into a stretch of highway that went through Camden into Philly when the RNC was holding it's convention in Philly. Meanwhile, one of the first areas to receive budget cuts was "King Christie" took over were inner-cities. Furthermore, he effectively duped teachers into supporting his candidacy for governor and many of them were laid off after he made promises to them. The point is that NJ is riddled with corruption and the places that can ill-offered it are the cities like Camden. But as long as the city is filled with dark-people & those who would need ESL classes, the state will turn a blind eye to issues like this.

Fanned, great post.
Anybody remember how Christie Whitman used Camden for a photo op? Riding around with the State Police Tactical teams patrolling Camden, they stopped and frisked a few young black males, then Whitman stood and posed next to a cuffed minor like she was standing next to the catch of the day out on a pier somewhere. Nice little souvenir for her.

There are no words. There are seriously no words.

It's like, how completely and utterly idiotic do you have to be?

I won't even drive THROUGH Camden anymore, let alone live there. I can't even begin to imagine what the residents are going to be facing now.

More dangerous cities, all run by democrats because Republicans made sure the money for infrastructure and sound monetary policy was paid for with tax cuts for the top 1%.

NJ could save Billions just by allowing Camden to return to its natural vegetative state.

Or...the Pentagon should rent it from NJ to use as an urban warfare training ground.

In doing something like this, one assumes that the local government is writing off the hope of landing any new business establishments. Who would move/start a business there?

The same 'far-sighted' approach goes for the country in general, and how we treat education.

Yes, we can forego it, and the effects won't be immediate, except for the local school district's bank account.

The long-term effects will be...well, devastating.
12:45 PM on 01/19/2011
That hope was written off many years ago. Nobody will be moving to Camden, instead people are trapped in Camden.

Scott Walker, the college dropout governor of WI has killed a light rail system here, sending a train manufacturer packing to another state. How will that attract business? Walker is offering tax cuts to bio-tech firms who DO NOT DO STEM CELL RESEARCH. How is that going to attract business?

Walker IS going to spend money on a partisan lawsuit to repeal the HC mandate, which won't happen. But since we're 3 billion in the hole here, who needs jobs or a focus on jobs when you can be a right-winged zealot and fundamentalist Christian ignoramus?

So a small, urban, impoverished city - left to die by those who fled to the rich suburbs - is now supposed to capitulate to fear and destruction, arming its citizens in hopes of staying alive? What is this, the Alamo? Instead, why can't we in Camden say no to guns and escalating violence and fear, tell the Mayor, county, and Governor we expect state laws to be carried out and violators to be arrested. If there are drug sets on every corner (and there are), why isn't Gov. Christie enforcing the law? To suggest that Union pensions are what is standing between citizens and safe streets is a ridiculous abrogation of duty by our elected leaders!

This is no laughing matter. Newark is on fire right now after laying off over 100 cops. Crime is up 60%, over 68 daylight robberies over the Christmas break. On one street, Springfield Ave, 35 daylight carjackings, over a dozen stabbings, over 60 robberies on that street alone since the end of November. It hasn't been this bad since the early 90's. Yesterday a school bus was caught in a crossfire in the street in Newark.

Now with Jersey City, Paterson and Camden looking like they will follow suit, this is a recipe for disaster. I mean, Camden of all places! Camden is like Beirut in New Jersey. When times are tough economically, people get desperate and commit crimes, this is feeding the beast.

Christie has these municipalities in a strangle hold and won't let up until their school systems are destroyed and replaced with Charter Schools, and the crime rate is so high that people blame the police union and teacher's union. It's all about breaking the two biggest NJ unions in a game of brinksmanship.. and most of Christie's voters don't live anywhere near the cities.
12:46 PM on 01/19/2011
The NRA and a bunch of southern good ole' boys peddling assault rifles will be glad to he'p you out.

I'm sure they're just tickled to death (so to speak), seeing these places revert to the Wild West.

Hey, NJ elected the government they got. They deserve it.

So let's sit back and watch the entertainment. Kinda like being in the Roman Coliseum to watch the ugly and brutal festivities. The Six O'clock News will have plenty of 'content' to broadcast - sell a lot of toilet paper and beer that way.

I hope it's rated 'X' though, because of the violence...

They deserve it? They deserve it?

You're a sick individual if you think anyone deserves to be abandoned by their government and left in one of the most dangerous cities in the country with a reduced police force.

This isn't what people voted for. This is what conservatives are talking about when they say we progressives are just as bad. This kind of talk.

And you know what? They're right. Your ignorance is appalling.

Camden votes primarily Democratic. Christie didn't even get 50% of the votes in the last election, and would have lost to Corzine had Daggett not been an option and Corzine hadn't been so terrible.

Stop crapping on my state. You clearly know nothing about it, and your remarks about it are unwelcome and highly inappropriate.

Maybe you'll be able to enjoy the show, since you probably don't have anybody you care about living in those areas. So, you and Christie seem have a lot in common. To people who have to live with the violence, it's not a game and its not a set of numbers on a spreadsheet, it's feeling safe walking out of your house.
