As Food Demand Rises, Salvation Army Donations Drop

Due to high numbers of unemployed and underemployed families, more people showed up at Salvation Army programs across the country looking for food in 2010, but nearly two-thirds of those programs saw a decrease in food and money donations.

According to an internal survey conducted in the fourth quarter of 2010, 94 percent of Salvation Army food service programs reported some level of increase in requests for food assistance over the previous year. The Salvation Army is one of the largest social-service organizations in the world, and is the largest direct provider of social services in many cities throughout the United States.

The report shows a marked increase in new clients, ranging from middle class families to the working poor, as well as younger generations looking for work.

"Here in Minnesota we have the new poor, the working poor, the underemployed, the unemployed -- it's a dynamic shift in the population of people coming in," said Major Darryl Leedom, the Salvation Army's regional commander for Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. "Many of those individuals have already exhausted their savings and financial support from friends and family, so it took them a while before they found it necessary to come in for food assistance."

Leedom told HuffPost the new families he sees coming in are often surprised and embarrassed to find themselves in the position of asking for help.

"They're a little bit ashamed -- no one likes to think they need something as basic as food," he said. "They'll say, 'I've never had to do this before, we've never walked by one of those red kettles without putting money in.' And we say, 'Our role is to embrace, empower, encourage, equip. We hope there's a day you wont need to come to us, but for right now, let's journey though this together.'"

Nationwide, monetary and food donations to Salvation Army food programs from government, public and private donors were all down in 2010. More than a third of programs surveyed said their funding decreased by as much as 50 percent and that their food stocks were running low to dangerously low.

Leedom said this lack of funds and supplies has forced each local program to be more creative about acquiring food.

"In 2009, through contributions from grocery stores, etc., 850,000 pounds of food were distributed, which is huge. We were able to beef that up through some other food-salvage efforts to over 953,000 pounds in 2010, despite a shortfall in finances, by pushing up our in-kind support," he said. "That means that before something expires, a grocery store will call us, and we pick up the items and then haul them to our neighborhood centers."

Salvation Army Commissioner William Roberts wrote in the report that he expects this high demand for food to continue into 2011, especially during the winter months, and he hopes people will dig deep and donate.

"To meet this demand in 2011, The Salvation Army is calling upon donors and other supporters everywhere to continue volunteering or giving back -- either to The Salvation Army or another charity -- to help ensure that not a single American goes hungry," Roberts wrote.

Donors and volunteers can learn more about giving to The Salvation Army by visiting www.SalvationArmyUSA.org or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

I respect the Salvation Army and their right to not employ gays. Its a religous organization, and as such, should be able to employ whoever they want. I even respect that they preach against gays. I don't support their right to fund actions against gays getting equal rights under the law such as marriage. You can think whatever you want to, but that doesn't give you license to act on it. I don't actively support the Salvation Army not just for their actions against gays, but because I do not feel a person should have to be subjected to a sermon about one's specific god in order to receive a cup of soup and a sandwich. If you act like a Christian, that will draw more people to the faith than all the semons in the world. A voluntary spoken outreach from the faith - great. A sermon required to eat - No.

I see one problem with this article: The Salvation Army is not a "social service organization". It's a Christian denomination that places huge emphasis on charity. There are Salvation Army churches. It's really a petty thing to point out, I admit, but it's somewhat annoying to see that fact overlooked.

Since so many here apparently fear posting any sources that state Salvation Army doesn't help homosexuals with food, I figured I would do so myself:

The Salvation Army, which receives nearly $300 million a year in U.S. government money, does NOT DISCRIMINATE in delivering its services but advocates against imposing "the category of sexual orientation to the list of anti-discrimination protections" by states and cities as well as against "equal benefits to domestic partnership". The Salvation Army does not hire people who are known to be gay and fires those who are gay when legally allowed to do so.

SOURCES: Washington Post; www.salvationarmyusa.org

So while yes, they do discriminate against homosexuals in who they hire and don't hire, they do NOT discriminate in those they give assistance to.

So now you have to ask yourself what's more important? Trying to prove a social/political point at the risk of hungry people (including homosexuals) not eating, or giving food anyways so people who are hungry (including homosexuals) can eat while you find a different way to fight for the rights of homosexuals?

Is your social/political point you're trying to make really worth people going hungry? How progressive are you, really?

Looks like this article might be at the end of its discussion. Just remember, whatever agency, church or local group you have in your own neighborhood, support them.

Did you know that any organization in your town, is empty by noon? Did you know, they never have toilet paper to give out, so donate TP. This is a time to help others, no matter what they believe.

Peace

The refusal of organizations such as the Salvation Army to provide We the People with an open and unbiased accounting of their financial status leaves them open to suspicion, derision and denunciation.
Having briefly worked for the SA I can say without rancor that if you are not part of the SA ‘clique’, than you’re part of the SA ‘problem’.

Perhaps if this so-called Christian organization acted more Christ-like they wouldn't be seeing the 75% decrease in contributions that some Salvation Army offices have reported.

When the Salvation Army decided which parts of the Bible they were going to interpret and enforce and which parts they would conveniently ignore, they lost the support of a great many people who believe that hypocrisy has no place in charity.

The Salvation Army literally saves lives. If you do not want to hear their message, fine, do not utilize them. Simple. So simple it simply eludes the far LW who think freedom OF religion is freedom FROM religion.

And so, another Conservative Pipe Dream bites the dust ! Wonder what happened to all of that "Privatized Altruism" when we need it. You remember the little diddy that goes something like "We don't need any Government programs to help the poor. Private charity is the way to confront these type of things".

Must be they all forgot to contribute.

To meet this demand, supporters are calling on the Salvation Army to be a little more frugal with the donatins they already get. The southeast headquarters in Atlanta insists on spending thousands of dollars a year for the most expensive office supplies they can, dealling with the big business superstores and refusing to support local business and suppliers.

As a church they frown upon gay issues, many churches do as they do adultry for instance, BUT I've NEVER seen them turn their backs on ANYONE in need. And they seem to do it without much fan fair. Sorry, but when I give to the Salvation Army I know that the majority of every dollar goes to someone in need, which seems to trump everything else.
09:57 AM on 01/19/2011
Most donations are providing for the advancement and livelihood of a Salvationist cult, They use the least amount of “front” money (takes money- to make money) possible to assist those in need; only enough to project that”doing the most good” image so you’ll keep giving. And until so many naive people stop refusing to look past the cover and open the book; millions of dollars will continue to be diverted from top rated charities and full disclosure churches, only hurting those in need. The direct services they are so proud of are primarily paid for by the U.S. Government (you and your tax money) through federal programs! As well as local funds and grants. The Salvation Army alone received $366 million government dollars in 2008. .

Great post. For all of the reasons that you stated, is why I only give to my local charities. I am a huge fan of my local food bank. I get the most bang for my buck, AND I don't give money to the Salvation homophobes.

In full disclosure, my in-laws have been a part of the Salvation Army church for many, many years and although I don't agree with all of their beliefs, they give relentless amount of time and energies to the SA charities. I've seen what their time and energy produces, my opinion is not based upon hearsay or a report. Now I understand it's a big organization and I'm not gullible, any part of an organization can be corrupt. Maybe the higher ups might be corrupt, but I've seen their foot soldiers doing a lot to help those who need it. It's just hard to not to believe what I've seen with my own eyes.
10:45 AM on 01/19/2011
You are so right. It's the "foot soldiers" that make them look good. It's the "disposable" people that care. I went to work for them because I cared about my fellow man. I soon learned of the scams and corruption that plague this organization.

Donations are DOWN at the Salvation Army because the "People" are learning that the Salvation Army is nothing more than a frightwinged Evangelic-Christian-Zealot group who spend most of their donations telling people around the world that they will go to "he//" if they don't accept that Guy-On-The-Cross story as their "Savior"

People are donating to OTHER food pantries - not the Salvation Army.

...I hope it's true, as you say, that other programs are taking up the slack, but I don't think I can count on that - I think I actually need to check out the local scene and give some support to those efforts, since I have been unable to embrace the prejudice of the SA, and their fractured humanity that has - tragically - given the tinkling bells a terribly sour note.

It is almost funny to see some of the comments here. We are told we don't care about feeding the needy by the right flavored trolls here. However, they fail miserably at seeing it for what it is. The Salvation Army cares more about it's bigotry than they do in getting more donations.

I refuse to donate to someone who demonizes the LGBT community. See how this works?
