What Steve Jobs' Medical Leave Means For Apple: Experts Weigh In

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/18/2011 7:36 am Updated: 05/25/2011 6:25 pm

Steve Jobs

Yesterday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced he would be taking a medical leave of absence--his second in approximately one year--and shifting responsibility for day to day operations to Apple COO Tim Cook.

The question everyone is asking: What does this mean for Apple?

Here's a look at what people are saying about Jobs' leave, which is of unspecified duration:

Daring Fireball argues his absence will not have a major effect on the company: "Apple's been here before. Jobs missed most of 2009, and when he returned, it was a while before he got back to full time. The product cycle continued. Existing products were improved. New products were released. Future products progressed in development. Was it the same without him? No, of course not. Did the company function just fine? Yes. Jobs's leave of absence is cause for concern -- and for good thoughts and well-wishes. It is not cause for panic."

The New York Times notes that Apple has "a deep bench of leadership," but takes the stance that Jobs will be hardest to replace at "the negotiating table": "Mr. Jobs has sought to sway many through the strength of his personality, for instance, playing a direct role in persuading media companies to make their content available on Apple's products. That role is increasingly important, as Apple seeks to become an even bigger power in media distribution."

All Things Digital is optimistic that it will be business as usual at Apple: "In the end, Apple really didn't miss a beat the last time Jobs stepped away to focus on his health, despite all the hysterical speculation that it might. And it's not likely to this time, either-regardless of the open-ended nature of his leave and what some folks are describing as a 'less optimistic' tone in his message to employees."

TechCrunch believes Cook and Apple will be able to thrive despite Jobs' absence, though notes, "the wildcard is new products. While we’re in a bit of a lull of rumors following the iPad unveiling last year, you can be sure that Apple has other things they’ve been dreaming up in the meantime. One I wouldn’t bet against for a few years out, for example, is an actual television. For these types of things, Apple needs Jobs — until they can prove otherwise."

Apple is poised to announce Q1 results, but Business Insider and CNN Money predict Jobs' announcement will overshadow what is likely to be a very strong quarter. Apple's stock is "poised for 5% drop," says CNN Money.

Most pundits and analysts believe Apple's upcoming products--the next generation of Apple's iPhone and iPad are believed to be on the horizon--will be affected little by Jobs' absence. The Next Web speculates, "While the hand of Jobs is known to closely steer product development, his absence should have no real impact on their launch dates - both devices are likely to be well along their roadmap to release, especially the iPad 2 which is expected to be revealed within weeks."

How do you think Jobs' medical leave will affect Apple? Weigh in below.

Is there anything else in the Tech world today without 'Steve Jobs' in the title?

Apple has reached a high-point, and as far as domestic development, without a paradigm shift, is bound for a large zero. Apple was the smaller, more nimble company with innovation in consumer electronics. Hasn't that sector been more or less saturated, outsourced, and at the end of the line?

Jobs life is a failure actually, ---- never enjoyed his wealth.

Jobs could be suffering side effects from immune-suppressing medicines to prevent organ rejection. Even if his cancer has recurred, there are many treatment options, including chemotherapy and newer drugs that target various cancer pathways.

Steve's absence will be be felt. His attention to detail is what made the products what they are. But, i wouldnt put too much faith in the rest of the staff. While good and able managers, they are not innovators or designers. Two main qualities sorely missing with US Corporations today.

Jonathan Ive gives me hope that Apple will continue to give some great products, just in case steve doesnt come back.

Shiny packaging and a good advertising strategy will sell anything.

Convince me not one Ipod has ever failed. How bout that failure rate, i am sure apples is zero. Convince me that paying more for my apps and 30% more for the product itself than I would a competitor is worth it. Convince me that being a loyal supporter of Apple actually has any real benefit. Convince me that outside of their processors architecture Apple product have anything that the others don't. Seriously, Real world test some other products, you might actually be surprised how well they work. I will never own another Apple product from my experience they are overpriced average performing over-hyped and under featured compared to competitors.

On another note I do hope Mr. Jobs is doing well and has a full recovery from whatever is ailing him.

How many X-Boxes have flaws?-answer all of the first gens did. All of them. Your point? You can't make 100 million units over 10 years and not expect 1,00,000 to fail. How many Zunes failed over it's product life? Most iPods failed due to HDD issues- as we all know hard drives will fail, it's an entropic flaw in the media.
Average performing? Guess that's why every broadcast center, most major production houses use them. But I'm not going to convince someone who doesn't want to be convinced.

That Toshiba laptop still has a 9 pin vga port doesn't it. >tech fail. Come join the 21st century.lol.

Actually, you are wrong. The question on everyone's lips is "How is the guy?" Long before our commercial brain takes over, surely our humanity kicks in and we consider that here is a man who is suffering?

I think Steve Jobs would rather that we were concerned with his life work and how it will be affected than concern for his person. That is the impression I get.

If news media know-it-alls knew as much as they pretend, they'd have started their own companies and there wouldn't just be one Apple Inc. Monday morning quarterbacking and role playing have very little value.

I am biased I hate Apple and always have. Their products are popular because people are to lazy to read and learn how things work. They just want to eat the meat they don't care how it got to their plate. Apple does not need Steve Jobs. If Apple does need Steve Jobs then they don't have the best business model and I would bet on the company falling apart about a year after Steve's departure.

You have it wrong my friend. What you're saying, by analogy, is people need cars that always require a huge amount of maintenance like by old TR-2; that way they can spend their lives servicing their cars, missing a major part of real life.

They should get Wozniak to replace him for a few days.

Wozniak is and has been irrelevant to the tech industry for near 20 years. I have no reason to beleive that he is capable of doing anything at the helm of a large company like Apple.

One of the main reasons Apple is in the position it is in is because they never leave money on the table. At every turn they use psychology to make the consumer feel giving the money is a privilege because not everyone has the sense of style and taste to be an apple user.

I really don't see Steve Wozniak who is literally the human equivalent of a teddy bear, running a company like apple in the way that it would stay as financially healthy as it is now.

APPL dropped about 5% in the opening minutes in US trading. This isn't going to be a good day to own APPL.

No. It is a good time to buy though. They'll bounce back, especially with the new iPad and the iPhone.

I'm still way way WAY up, portfolio-wise.

Thank you Apple.

Seriously. My Apple stock has risen in the 50% range. I can live with that.

yes, if Steve disappears, all of our iPhones will get busy tones. People will start buying physical CDs in stores again, and will pine for buying Windows virus protection
