Venus Williams' Australian Open Outfit: Inspired By 'Alice In Wonderland' (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 01/19/11 12:18 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Venus Williams' has caused a stir once again with her latest outfit, which she unveiled in her second-round match against Sandra Zahlavova at the 2011 Australian Open. Williams walked onto the court wearing a revealing yellow dress with a crisscross pattern. This isn't the first time her outfit has drawn attention at a Grand Slam. Her U.S Open and French Open outfits in 2010 raised eyebrows as well.

The tennis star said the yellow dress was inspired by "Alice In Wonderland."

"Yeah, don't laugh," she said. "But it's kind of about a surprise, because when Alice goes down the hole, the rabbit hole, she finds all these things that are so surprising."

You can voice your opinions on how ugly the outfit Venus had on was, but once you counter it with flowery descriptions of what Wazniacki was wearing in comparision, your judgement becomes suspect. One outfit was ugly, BOTH were short. Don't throw BS in there about questioning Venus' respect for the game. Some of the statements I have read are so typical of what some of us are. Racially biased 24/7. Play down and dehumanize the sexuality of the black woman, play up and praise the sexuality of the white woman. I applaud those who recognize there is no real difference between the two.

I don't get it. One solid yellow piece would've looked great, but this is just odd. The skirt is worse than the waffly part.

Venus Williams is an awesome tennis player coming closer and closer to the end of her amazing career. She might think she is a fashion designer but the truth is she has the money to design clothes that she mistakes for fashion. I work in a high school and my students think this type of clothing is totally inappropriate. Venus is alone with this strange vision for tennis wear.
I am not in tune with what she is trying to prove but I do not believe it is helping her game!

Work it out Venus. I love you. You are my Idol. I really sad now that you pulled out the Australian Open. Really wanted you to dominate and win the title again. The tennis world is so sad and disappointed right now. Keep on fighting and get well soon. We need you and your sister back.

I really do question whether she has anyone around her who will tell her the truth. This is hideous. Everything she designs/wears is pretty much beyond awful. It detracts from her tennis, in my opinion.

She is tennis royalty. Her game is still sharp, and she is well within the rules to be wearing this outfit. Whether we think it's pretty or not is our own subjective opinion.

I question her taste and respect for the game. But then Serena's been all over HSN this week.

This outfit is dreadful. Someone who cares about her should tell her that she is naturally beautiful and that she should not wear such immodest/desperate gear.

WHY TO SHOW SO MUCH SKIN? I THINK MICHELLE OBAMA'S STYLE IS MUCH BETTER.

I'm all for Venus or anyone trying to inject some more personality and style into tennis, but I wonder if some of her outfits (and those unusual choices made by other players) are ever a distraction for opponents.

Maybe her opponents just tune it out, but when something is sooo different, does it take away a little focus?

I don't know. The only comparison I can think of is when umpires tell pitchers they can't have a bunch of chains or other jewelry on the mound because of the distraction.

What an ugly outfit. I don't get this new "fashion" where we have to look at everyone's undergarments. She's an awesome athlete but her fashion sense if more than questionable. She should continue to work hard to keep her day job.
