Gabon: Ape Heads, Body Parts Found On 5 Arrested

JOHANNESBURG — Authorities in Central Africa have arrested five people who were found with the heads of 12 chimpanzees and an endangered gorilla in a seizure that officials said Thursday was the largest of its kind in a decade.

WWF said the raid last week in the coastal nation of Gabon also included 30 chimpanzee hands and body parts belonging to leopards, elephants and a lion. If convicted, though, the suspects only face up to six months in prison.

Officials said they did not know what the body parts were intended for.

"Heads and hands, for example, are sometimes used for ritual ceremonies," said Natalia Reiter, communications manager for WWF International. "Some people believe it would bring them luck and some just keep it as souvenirs. Hands are believed to bring more power or are used as trophies."

Wildlife officials believe the case spans far beyond Gabon's borders as lions are not native to the country, so those animal parts originated elsewhere. The suspects are also all from elsewhere in Africa – four Nigerians and a woman from Benin.

"We don't know yet where these were going to be sent to in this case," she said.

WWF African Great Ape Manager David Greer said the haul was "highly disturbing."

"To my knowledge, there has not been a seizure of great ape body parts of this magnitude in Central Africa over the last ten years," he said.

Bushmeat – the meat of gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants and other endangered and exotic species – is consumed and sold throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The practice is fueled by extreme poverty that forces people to poach for the meat.

However, the meat also has a market in Europe, where it is consumed by African immigrants. One study last year found that more than five tons of bushmeat slips through the main airport in Paris alone each week.

Reiter said the five suspects in Gabon are being held by authorities while an investigation is conducted. They are expected to appear in court this week.

But she said the arrests are only part of the fight against animal poaching and trafficking.

"We really need to target the dealers, as they are the ones who are selling them everywhere in the world," she said. "Unfortunately there are a lot of markets for leopard skins, ivory and other wildlife so it is an international operation."

This is just so sad! I am glad they were caught but at the same time so many more people don't get caught.
I know that there are people living in extreme poverty and I can understand subsistence hunting but hunting for trophies and selling animal parts for trophies is just wrong.
Wildlife organizations really need to do more to provide economic opportunites for people living in poverty in countries with these beautiful and endangered animals.

Help end the bushmeat trade and help the orphans of the trade by supporting the Jane Goodall institute and roots and shoots. This act of eating chimps is cannibalism and as a result we have diseases such as Aids and ebola. We are not only harming other creatures but ourselves. We need to educate the people of Africa and help them learn sustainable farming practices. Supporting Ms.Goodall covers all of the issues. http://www.janegoodall.org/chimpanzees-protecting-home.
If you are eating fish stop or find fish from sustainable fishing sources. There is a direct link between overfishing, and consequently less fish for native peoples, to the rise in bushmeat. Meaning they will go into the bush if they can't find food elsewhere.

I agree but have issue with the statement that we need to educate the people of africa. It's not just that we need to provide education but that we need to stop exploiting thier resources.

Nigeria could be a very waelthy country from thier oil resources if the world would stop allowing oil companies to rape and pilliage that resource and give nothing at all back to the people. Same with lumber and mining companies. They do not provide anything to the people and instead exploit the people and the environment.

If these companies were forced to give back and not just keep all the resources and money and ship it out of the continent than much could be done for the people of Africa.

Hey! Don't judge these people. Everything is acceptable today because we are globalist and cannot judge anyone or anything.

Seriously, this is a huge problem. Hyper-globalism has led to our inability to stop any trade no matter how terrible. Slavery and environmental destruction are a direct result of liberal trade policies.

Serioulsly, you could not be more wrong. Organizations like Wildaid and WWF are finding much more (not less) cooperation with governments around the world.

This article is disturbing, and yet, no one makes a stink over hunters and/or wildlife "enthusiasts" who hang deer heads in their living rooms or make a rug out of the skin of a bear.

I disagree. While no fan of any kind of hunting, I can differentiate between endangered animals who have been shown to have human-like emotions and social structures and can be caught to use language, and animals such as deer which are not only not endangered, they are considered pest animals in many parts of the nation. Bears I'm on the fence about. They do appear to be higher functioning, provide valuable service to their eco-systems and certain species of them are endangered. Plus, I can't imagine that they really make good food, while venison is delicious and nutritious.

So because deer are not endangered and they do not have "higher intelligence" the way apes do, that makes it ok to shoot them for fun and turn their body parts into some type of trophy? It's silly and makes no sense!! A life is a life, no matter whether they are considered intelligent, endangered, human-like or not.

When we defeat all supernatural fairy tales. For instance, we also need to learn that a 'nilla wafer is NOT the body of Christ and will NOT help you get closer to heaven.

Because some of these countries have the dumbest people on the planet. Lack of education and a third world country does wonders for keeping the boogy man alive

I sorry, What is bushmeat? I hope I'm not eating it,,,,,,,but that's why Parisian cooking took off, the sauces would disguise all that bad meat. Off the record, last time in Paris, went to McDonalds and got a McBeer, they serve beer there, awesome!

Sad! Personally, I think the murder of any higher primate or highly intelligent mammal warrants the same penalty for killing a human. These people are mass murders and should be treated as such!
