'Bill Cunningham New York' Trailer: Inside The World Of New York's Original Street Style Photographer (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/21/2011 4:06 pm Updated: 05/25/2011 6:25 pm

New York's original street style photographer Bill Cunningham will hit the silver screen come March 16 in a documentary we'll be lining up (in our chicest clothes) to see. As Cunningham says, "The best fashion show is on the street. It always has been and always will be."

Cameras followed Bill all around Manhattan while he did his thing and interviewed his gaggle of admirers including Vogue Editrix Anna Wintour, who in a likable moment made it sound like she answers to him: "He's been documenting me since I was a kid and it's one snap, two snaps...or it's death."

Cunningham also shows off his...interestingly-decorated apartment, asking, "Who the hell needs a kitchen or a bathroom?"

Check out the trailer for "Bill Cunningham New York," a film by Richard Press.

I can't wait to see this film and there are two reasons for the abundance of enthusiasm I am feeling.

First, I would like to point out that it is distributed by a small NYC company called Zeitgeist Films. I felt a big 'wow!' come over me when I saw their logo splash in the opening of the trailer. I've also been a big fan of theirs for a long time and consult their web site often. Zeitgeist has great taste in film - always falling in the realm of the smart, funny, outre, and/or stylish endeavor.

Either I catch their offerings in the theater or when that's not possible, have purchased DVDs directly from them.

I mention this because Independent film has such a hard time getting venues to show their work these days, and Emily and Nancy, co-presidents of the company, and their very capable staff do an incredible job of getting their pick of the crop out there. Zeitgeist deserves enormous credit for bucking Hollywood marketing domination trends and surviving against great economic odds over the years.

Now I am delighted to see that they have picked up this particular film! I love Bill's videos on the New York Times. To be photographed by him has to be one of the greatest thrills there is for a New Yorker.

I look forward to seeing this film and confess that I'm still hoping my day will come when Bill picks me out of the crowd for immortaliation!

That was meant to be 'immortalization', of course. Will Bill ever forgive me for something as unstylish as a typo? Especially one issued while attempting to sing his praises?

I love Bill Cunningham and never miss his NYT "On The Street" videos. I hope he gets paid? His comment on the vid made it sound like he doesn't get paid, own a bathroom or a kitchen. Say, it isn't so Bill!

I had a chance to meet him when I was shooting the runway shows in Paris. When I first saw him I was wondering why he was photographing people in the audience rather than the actual models on the runway. He is unique and as I found out in very little time a well respected photographer amongst his peer group, not to mention a very likeable guy. About time he got the proper acknowledgement for all his work.

Who doesn't love Bill Cunningham! He has an amazing eye and everyone who has any interest in fashion and style can't wait to see who he has snapped from week-to-week. This documentary will be a collectors item for sure. Can't wait to see!!!

I saw this documentary at a special screening last fall, followed by a Q & A with the filmmakers. It is a wonderful film, a delight for any lover of style and fashion, but also an extremely poignant and touching tale of a truly unique man (and his neighbors). You'll get a glimpse of his daily life as well as his inner life, and his expressive face tells a thousand tales that he will not or cannot bring himself to share. I can't wait to see it again. it really is a beautiful film, in every sense of the word. One of the high points of my career as a milliner was the day my customer sent me a clipping where she had been snapped by Bill in the hat I had created for her. And of course, I now cannot find it!!

I adore Bill Cunningham! And checking him out is one of Sunday morning's guilty pleasures. His love of life and the sincere joy he finds in street fashion is so infectious. His video columns always make me want to hop up the City.

Glad that he's getting his props now rather than after the fact.

Bill is a wonderful person. He photographs people in their own clothes, not borrowed. You believe it's really their style.

Bill is to fashion in NYC and the world as the Empire State Bldg is to New York City and the Eiffel tower to Paris

LOVE his column every week. I am always looking at the pictures and saying, "So, how come I didn't KNOW that (fill in the item of clothing here) was a huge trend?!" I love fashion, but I am just not ahead of trends, I guess.
