You are so clueless about sports. Here's a survey of sports professionals about the world's most demanding sports: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills . You'll notice ice hockey is the second most demanding- after only boxing. So whatever your sport is, it's lamer unless its boxing. PS the earth-based version of Soccer is Soccer, smarty-pants

NHL Fighting = freedom of being white no ESPN
NBA/NFL Fighting = multiple investigations by ESPN, daily reporting.

The joys of hue.

No argument that race plays a role in the reporting of the athletes behavior, but I think there is a another reason for the differences in the coverage of fighting between sports. "Fisticuffs" is literally written into the rules of hockey. Every other major league abhors fighting and an athlete who fights is liable to be ejected from the game, suspended and fined. ESPN covers these instances in line with the rules of the league; as shocking and bad behavior. Now ESPN also covers hockey fights... they PRAISE it. Now the reason they don't portray hockey fighting as shocking or bad behavior that warrants daily coverage, is because fighting is a part of the highest levels of competitive hockey. It's not shocking, it happens in nearly every NHL game. And it's not bad, hockey players/fans/officials view it as a tool to help enforce the rules (written and unwritten) of the game (It can also be used to create momentum for a side). Fighting is a penalty in hockey but it almost always offsets with a fighting penalty on the other team. Each player is out for five minutes, but in this case (matching penalties) neither team goes down a man, hence the penalty is nearly moot.

The shame is that young athletes of color rarely have access to the venue/equipment necessary to play hockey (except in Canada, and still...). Although ESPN treats athletes differently depending on race, this is not the case here.

give me a break. Black nhlers get into fights all the time and are treated the same by the rules, fans and media. How do you explain that? Fighting was never tolerated in football or basketball back when they were white dominated. Explain. Andre Johnson of the NFL's Texans got no suspension for repeatedly punching a fallen opponent's bare head. Some bias.

As mentioned earlier, NHL enforcers are generally considered to be quite gentlemanly, even cordial off the ice, while doing a necessary job on the ice. Granted, there are some "thuggish" types around the league, Sean Avery, Daniel Carcillo, and of course Donald Bradshear come to mind. It's the enforcers' job to keep everyone, especially the agitators honest. Here's an excellent example of two tough guys sensing things getting a little overheated and letting everyone know it's time to cool it. One-time league heavyweight champion Gentleman Georges Laraque wishing his adversary, Russian Nightmare Raitis Ivanans good luck prior to squaring off. Pure class.

In another fine display of sportsmanship Kyle Clifford removes his helmet so as not to have an unfair advantage over his opponent.

It's instances where enforcers aren't allowed to do their job, things can get quickly out of hand.

Typical NHL. If you want to see hockey, not goonery, wait for the Olympics.

typical flyers over the years....if they can't beat the opponent on the scoreboard beat them with their fists. even though the flyers were winning this game rather easily.

I'm a ruffian and actually a fan of human combat. What I'm not a fan of is the hypocrisy that says these guys fighting is awesome but if it's a NFL or NBA fight the players are thugs. Wonder what such opinions are founded in?

Again, your response lacks an actual answer of the question. I'd avoid it also.

12 players on the ice with weapons (sticks). hockey lets them fight with fists as a safety release. have you ever seen film of stick fights? (maki & green come to mind). stick fights are scary and dangerous.

If only my Wings would stand up for themselves like this. Passive resistance is fine in human rights, but in hockey? No way, old time justice.

Where's the real hockey news? The Leafs won.
02:17 PM on 01/21/2011
The Flyers are the top team in the league right now and they were playing one of the worst teams in the league in the Senators... Three of the Flyers top scorers (typically guys you don't want fighting) get drawn into fights while they're winning by 3 goals and a 4th leading scorer who never fights almost got into one.... and the announcers in these clips seem to think it's the Senators who are the victims here?

Teams that are in first place and up by 3 goals don't need to fight and if they do, it's only to protect themselves.

That's rich.
