Florida Governor Rick Scott Holds Twitter Town Hall

Twitter Town Hall

BRENDAN FARRINGTON   01/21/11 09:25 AM ET   AP

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Rick Scott, welcome to Twitter.

Scott tweeted for himself for the first time Thursday night during a Twitter town hall, giving brief answers to questions about offshore drilling, taxes, schools, state employee benefits, how he likes living in Tallahassee, whether he and his wife Ann plan to have more kids and more.

"unlikely," the 58-year-old Scott tweeted in response to a tweep, or Twitter user, who asked about having more children, as he and Ann laughed.

Scott spent more than $70 million of his own money to take his message directly to the public during his campaign. Now he's sort of doing the same thing without spending a cent.

"You have to figure out ways to communicate with everybody," said Scott, who said he plans to hold more Twitter town halls.

Until now, Scott's staff handled all of the governor's Twitter posts. He did have help as he sat in the governor's mansion for a little more than 30 minutes answering questions. Staff helped point out questions from the hundreds being asked with the hashtag (pound)flgov. They also gave instructions on how to tweet, but the words were his own. His Twitter name is (at)FLGovScott.

Scott said he had no problem with Twitter's 140 character limit on tweets. He said that when he used to use e-mail – he no longer does because his e-mails about state business are public records – they were not much longer than that, and often contained entirely in the subject line.

One Twitter follower asked, "What are your thoughts around off shore drilling ?" Scott responded, "need to make sure we do it when it is safe, not before"

Asked "What, if anything, is on your wish list from Washington DC?", Scott responded, "stop giving us mandates, reduce our federal taxes."

At one point Scott tweeted that Ann had entered the room. Ann Scott, following the tweets with Scott, laughed a few seconds later and said, "Someone asked 'What is the first lady wearing."

Scott didn't answer that one.

Among other questions he didn't answer was "Who does your hair?" – though Scott, who is bald, did laugh when he saw it.

Tweeting wasn't something Scott's predecessor, Charlie Crist, was interested in doing on his own. Once asked if he used Twitter, Crist replied, "When you're governor of a state the size of Florida, I don't have time to be tweeting all day. I need to govern most of the day."

Scott began his Twitter town hall at 7 p.m., and held a staff meeting afterward.

The last question he answered: What is his favorite part about living in Tallahassee? Scott, whose home is in Naples, responded, "everyone is nice, friendly, and welcoming, great state workers, good football and basketball"

Floridians can expect similar Twitter events in the future.

"I'll get faster and figure out how you can respond and give people information quicker," Scott said. "People have legitimate questions."

This worthless excuse of a politician just released Florida's largest source of pollution, the sugar industry, from any investigation or prosecution from the EPA. Barely moved in to his office and there's already a grassroots recall effort being assembled. Sometimes I'm sad to be a Floridian....

He's twittering, while banning reporters, making decisions behind closed doors, in violation of Sunshine Laws in FL, and appointing corporate dupes to important posts in state govt. What a shock.....we can count down the days until he violates another law...

Can't tell you how sad this affair is. Buy your way to office by making promises that you can't keep, and then hide! My state is doomed. If Scott has his way he will completely destroy public education with vouchers for all. Don't get me started on the twit who is noe the head of DCF.

So this way he can avoid the press -- which he seems to have on short leash. Hopefully, this will come back to haunt this criminal (should I say Alleged ??) Florida's government laws have already taken a beating -- it is going to get worse here in the sunshine state before it gets better. Barring a nationally televised "Perp Walk"

A very Palin way of communicating with your constituents Ricky. Choose what you want to answer and avoid any form of public debate. Scott has managed to avoid contact in any meaningful way with the news media and has yet to publish a specific plan which will explain how he intends to implement all his campaign promises. As with most Republicans he can only speak to slashing taxes. No one likes to pay taxes but most reasonable people recognize that it is taxes that pay for our schools, police and fire services as well as social programs. All Rick is interested in doing is courting votes from seniors who are typically from somewhere else and could care less about anything but Social Security and Medicare and corporations who will take any tax savings to the bottom line and not necessarily hire or re-hire employees.

so bogus...so we get to communicate with our governor in a language used by middle school kids, and answers with such brevity that understanding is almost certainly impossible. No follow-ups or clarifications, just vague ambiguities. Great job, Dick Scott.

Operative word in this article: "brief" and little else. Are any of these so-called legislators going to more than just adequately have a discussion on any issue by instead using this medium to express any of their views? Think not. This is Palin's strategy and those that have equally very little intellectual depth.
