Apple Reveals Top Free iPad Apps Of All Time (PICTURES)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 01/21/11 02:55 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Of the thousands of apps available for the iPad, a handful have resounded so well with customers that Apple is featuring them on a special iTunes page devoted to 40 of the most popular apps for iOS devices.

Since Apple opened its App Store service for iOS devices in 2008, mobile users have been downloading content at a rate of more than three billion apps per year. Now, the App Store's download counter is hurtling towards the 10 billion mark, and Apple plans to award a $10,000 iTunes gift card to the person who completes the 10-billionth download.

Ahead of the App Store's milestone, Apple has announced the most downloaded iPhone and iPad apps of all time. Categories include paid and free apps for both devices.

We recently posted the top free iPhone apps and noticed that Facebook's mobile app was the most popular on that list. However, Facebook does not appear anywhere on the iPad's list of top apps. That's because, as CNET notes, Facebook does not yet offer an official iPad app.

Can you guess which free iPad app took the top spot? Find out by viewing the slideshow (below). Then, check out our slideshow of the 15 best iPad apps, and see which one Apple named "iPad app of the year" in 2010.

This device has not even been out a full year yet.

Don't you think we should get at least one "Top Free iPad Apps of the Year" before we move on to the top apps "of all time"?

iOS 4.3 yet?

Besides then Android already plays Flash content ... you know, like on the real internet. Go on, tell us again how if Jobs won't let you do it ... it ain't worth doing. That one never gets old.

The largest TV remote of all time and not user-friendly. Some apps may be the most downloaded but seldom used.

No. I think you can pay and it will allow you to skip as many songs as you want. Otherwise, the free version will only let you skip a few songs that you don't like.

You can also get TuneIn Radio for free. Which I am listening to right now. Radio from around the world. Includes Antartica! I am listening to WBAI in NYC right now. I live on the west coast.

I enjoy Tunein. But that is for real radio stations. (Which is awesome!) Pandora (and I believe there are others) is a station that you make. So you can enter a style that you want to hear and it will play music that is suppossed to be similar.

Do you understand a user makes a conscious choice to download an App, therefore your comparison is not only intolerant and offensive but wrong.

Since iOS 4 was made available for the iPad, all (iOS4) iPhone apps run on the iPad. We tweaked one of our apps with larger artwork (required by Apple), but nothing more.

Even though our app is in English we were selling a lot of our iPhone app "A Computer Dictionary" to the China market. http://tinyurl.com/acomputerdictionary We came out with an iPad version and it's selling even more in China. I'd be curious how many apps are sold in China.
