Dog Survives Being Trapped On Ice For 5 Days (VIDEO)

Dog On Ice

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/22/11 05:13 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Gibson the dog disappeared from her Arlington, MA home over a week ago, and her owners probably didn't expect to find her where they did.

Gibson managed to get trapped on an iced-over pond for 5 days.

In this CNN video, an official notes that he is puzzled as to how she got onto the ice because the pond is totally fenced in, and there wasn't a way for an animal to have access into the area.

Rescuers attempted to catch Gibson for 3 days, but she had 160 acres of ice to run around on, and kept managing to evade them. Finally, on Wednesday, a team of nine rescuers were able to catch the pup.

She was returned home to her very thankful owners.

It is Fresh Pond in Cambrige it is not a lake!
Lakes are usally river i.e. Great Lakes
This Pond is spring fed...
I grew up there, very sacrid area, Red tail hawks etc...
Should be more like dog goes home for a week.
Back to Chuck Wagon poochie...
See you next winter.

160-acre pond? Thats one big-a** pond...feel like thats more of a lake size. Either way, glad the dog is alive and safe now.

So Gibson, tell us, what was it like spending five freezing cold days and nights, lonely wandering around on a frozen lake with possible death mere feet away?

"Rough!"

I hate it when they post videos like this. For some reason, I just can't watch anything when a dog is in distress, even if it's just a movie. I get so upset. So, while I didn't watch, I'm glad it was a happy ending.

I was too cowardly to watch this since i have seen it all too often in real time.   Here is a thing that is well past and i am glad of it.  It used to be when dogs and children were more on their own, dogs would fall through the ice and children would go after them.   I haven't heard that sad story in a long time and yet it used to happen every winter of my childhood.

A micro-bio? Really? REALLY?

I don't understand why they couldn't get the owners to stand on the edge with food and whistle.

spooked by the slippery ice and someone chasing her.  WHo knows..is this a Border Collie..she might think she is playing a game.  I don't understand either really...they want to eat all the time.  I am glad it didnt' go through the ice.  And what does define a POND.

It's a lovely area to walk around, especially during fall foliage.

And like Hansel and Gretel ...leave a trail of really attractive food.  But if it is spooked, who knows.

Cute girl. I have to imagine her poor paws were frozen and she was starving after a day or two. Seems like a clever trap and a giant steak might have done the trick. Wonder what took so long.

Exactly, or they could have let the owners bring her food and water bowls. Instead, they spent 3 days scaring her off.

They didn't know who the owners were, but animal control people really should know better than to chase a scared animal. I never thought people from Arlington were as smart as they thought themselves to be anyway, so....
