European 'Road Train' Cars Drive Themselves While You Sleep (PICTURES)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 01/22/11 08:13 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Imagine you're driving down the highway, when you pass a column of cars cruising in tandem. You notice with awe that the steering wheel in each car moves autonomously while the drivers eat, read and get ready for work--some drivers even appear to be sleeping! If this sounds too good to be true, you're in for another shock: you've just received a sneak peek at 2021.

Testing of this so-called "road train" system is already underway in Europe, where the European Commission-backed Safe Road Trains for the Environment (SARTRE) program has partnered with companies like Volvo Car Corporation to develop technology that will make driving safer, easier and more efficient.

A "road train" describes a line of cars, each outfitted with advanced steering and sensory technology, that follow behind a leader vehicle, which guides the cars as they travel along a preprogrammed route. Each car in the "train" communicates with the leader via Wi-Fi, thus requiring little to no input from their individual drivers, who are free to take their eyes off the road and engage in other activities behind the wheel.

Until recently, this system has been tested only in simulations. The first "road train" hit the streets in December 2010, Wired reports. This real-world test took place on a snowy road outside of Gothenburg, Sweden and consisted of a mini-train of only two cars, a Volvo S60 and its leader vehicle. The next step for researchers will be to add more cars to the train and tighten the distance between each car.

In addition to reducing human-error collisions, SARTRE researchers hope this system of driving will increase fuel efficiency by as much as 20 percent, according to CNN. With each car traveling at a constant speed only a few meters apart, these "road trains" are also likely to ease traffic congestion on crowded roads.

Look through our slideshow (below) to see photographs from Volvo's test of the SARTRE "road train" test, as well as animations that show how a multi-car road train will function. Then, check out plans for China's 3D Express Coach, a two-story bus that can pass directly over smaller cars on the road. For more on the future of driving, view our slideshow of concept cars from 2010's Geneva Motor Show.

The "road train" system, also known as "platooning," lets drivers relax while their cars steer themselves. The "platoon" leader wirelessly controls the speed and direction of the cars sharing its network connection.

I love this idea. More Articles like this please...

“The "road train" system, also known as "platooning," lets drivers relax while their cars steer themselves. The "platoon" leader wirelessly controls the speed and direction of the cars sharing its network connection. “

What will be interesting is the potential for shared resources and shared systems.
Platooning inspires all kinds of ‘whatifs’ like, what if 'platooning' could generate energy to share between cars, and also sharing with the communities along the way. Instead of consuming energy, it generates energy for the communities. Rural communities and cities could benefit equally with no harm to either one. There is so much potential for good technologies to come from this idea.

There are cities in the Netherlands that claim 0 carbon foot print and no one goes without.
It can be done.
This is how it is done.
Sharing. Remember sharing???
No one has too much and no one has too little. Everyone has enough.

BTW: It for sure cannot be done with the greedy, gluttonous, 'whats-in-it-for-me’, narcissistic, selfish, hoarding, money at all cost, capitalist mentality. … Jus' sayin'

I think more widespread non-petrol light rail systems would be better. Get cars off the roads.

I'd happily jump on a train if it were more convenient to where I live. Right now, I live about 6 miles from the nearest light rail station (the MAX in Portland, OR). And it's not just "6 miles to the station", it's "6 miles out of the way, in the wrong direction for where I need to travel".

My commute now is about 30 minutes each way (which isn't bad for 17 miles each way). I have done the bus-transfer-train thing before; the commute increases to about 1 hour 25 minutes each way. I just can't justify giving up that much time out of my day just to keep my car off the road.

My concerns with this system (SARTRE) would be the strength, stability, & security of the Wi-Fi signal, the qualifications of the driver of the lead vehicle, and how it would do mixed in with other regular traffic. All obstacles that can be overcome... but 2021 doesn't seem like enough time to get there...

Sounds great and all.....

This is great if you are drunk and need to drive home.
You can even drink more while the car drives you.

Know what else is "already underway"? F---ers hacking automated cars from inside of their cars, to cause you to crash.

Automated cars? No thanks! Pretty pa thetic way to go, if you become a victim of hacking.

Sorry but hackerns may have no say in this.
If the commubication system for some reason breaks down the road train will of course stop in a controlled manner.
Ypou can't hack a autonomous radar.

Don't get too comfortable. There's only about 15-20 years left of cheap oil in the world. Somehow I don't see electric cars going at 60 mph beating trains cruising at 150 mph and up.

Unless the car companies keep tearing up train tracks. They probably won't even have to; the Republicans will just Fox the word out to their worker ants and we'll have obese people with pickaxes out there before the first track is laid.

It is a trust system. You would need to trust the driver of the truck and the system to work.

We already trust every other driver to not smash into us head-on when we pass on non-divided roads... this is probably the least of the issues the system has to overcome...

This is interesting technology.. I wonder if this is possible could they then build a car the blind could "drive"?

Back in the late 70s during the custom van craze I recall a news story about a guy who bought a new tricked out van replete w/ mini bar in the back. He took it out on the highway, set the cruise control and went into the back to get a drink...
