China's Stealth Fighter May Use U.S. Technology

China Stealth Fighter

BRUSSELS (AP) — Chinese officials recently unveiled a new, high-tech stealth fighter that could pose a significant threat to American air superiority – and some of its technology, it turns out, may well have come from the U.S. itself. (Scroll down for video.)

Balkan military officials and other experts have told The Associated Press that in all probability the Chinese gleaned some of their technological know-how from an American F-117 Nighthawk that was shot down over Serbia in 1999.

Nighthawks were the world's first stealth fighters, planes that were very hard for radar to detect. But on March 27, 1999, during NATO's aerial bombing of Serbia in the Kosovo war, a Serbian anti-aircraft missile shot one of the Nighthawks down. The pilot ejected and was rescued.

It was the first time one of the much-touted "invisible" fighters had ever been hit. The Pentagon believed a combination of clever tactics and sheer luck had allowed a Soviet-built SA-3 missile to bring down the jet.

The wreckage was strewn over a wide area of flat farmlands, and civilians collected the parts – some the size of small cars – as souvenirs.

"At the time, our intelligence reports told of Chinese agents crisscrossing the region where the F-117 disintegrated, buying up parts of the plane from local farmers," says Adm. Davor Domazet-Loso, Croatia's military chief of staff during the Kosovo war.

"We believe the Chinese used those materials to gain an insight into secret stealth technologies ... and to reverse-engineer them," Domazet-Loso said in a telephone interview.

A senior Serbian military official confirmed that pieces of the wreckage were removed by souvenir collectors, and that some ended up "in the hands of foreign military attaches."

In Washington, an Air Force official said the service was unaware of any connection between the downed F-117 plane and development of Chinese stealth technology for the J-20. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the subject involves classified information.

Efforts to get comment from China's defense ministry were unsuccessful.

China's multi-role stealth fighter – known as the Chengdu J-20 – made its inaugural flight Jan. 11, revealing dramatic progress in the country's efforts to develop cutting-edge military technologies.

Although the twin-engine J-20 is at least eight or nine years from entering air force inventory, it could become a rival to America's top-of-the-line F-22 Raptor, the successor to the Nighthawk and the only stealth fighter currently in service.

China rolled out the J-20 just days before a visit to Beijing by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, leading some analysts to speculate that the timing was intended to demonstrate the growing might of China's armed forces.

Despite Chinese President Hu Jintao's high-profile visit to the United States this week, many in Washington see China as an economic threat to the U.S. and worry as well about Beijing's military might.

Parts of the downed F-117 wreckage – such as the left wing with US Air Force insignia, the cockpit canopy, ejection seat, pilot's helmet and radio – are exhibited at Belgrade's aviation museum.

"I don't know what happened to the rest of the plane," said Zoran Milicevic, deputy director of the museum. "A lot of delegations visited us in the past, including the Chinese, Russians and Americans ... but no one showed any interest in taking any part of the jet."

Zoran Kusovac, a Rome-based military consultant, said the regime of former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic routinely shared captured Western equipment with its Chinese and Russian allies.

"The destroyed F-117 topped that wish-list for both the Russians and Chinese," Kusovac said.

Russia's Sukhoi T-50 prototype stealth fighter made its maiden flight last year and is due to enter service in about four years. It is likely that the Russians also gleaned knowledge of stealth technology from the downed Nighthawk.

The F-117, developed in great secrecy in the 1970s, began service in 1983.

While not completely invisible to radar, its shape and radar-absorbent coating made detection extremely difficult. The radar cross-section was further reduced because the wings' leading and trailing edges were composed of nonmetallic honeycomb structures that do not reflect radar rays.

Kusovac said insight into this critical technology, and particularly the plane's secret radiation-absorbent exterior coating, would have significantly enhanced China's stealth know-how.

Alexander Huang of Taipei's Tamkang University said the J-20 represented a major step forward for China. He described Domazet-Loso's claim as "a logical assessment."

"There is no other stronger source for the origin of the J-20's stealthy technology," said Huang, an expert on China's air force. "The argument the Croatian chief-of-staff makes is legitimate and cannot be ruled out."

The Chinese are well-known perpetrators of industrial espionage in Western Europe and the United States, where the administration has also been increasingly aggressive in prosecuting cases of Chinese espionage.

Western diplomats have said China maintained an intelligence post in its Belgrade embassy during the Kosovo war. The building was mistakenly struck by U.S. bombers that May, killing three people inside.

"What that means is that the Serbs and Chinese would have been sharing their intelligence," said Alexander Neill, head of the Asia security program at the Royal United Services Institute, a defense think tank in London. "It's very likely that they shared the technology they recovered from the F-117, and it's very plausible that elements of the F-117 got to China."

The stealth tech is maybe not that good. The Serbs are a pretty low tech force and they managed to bring a stealth plane down. Or maybe their mastery over their low tech systems is superior to the mastery we have over our hi tech systems.

Serbs figured out that long wavelength radars can pick up and track F-117. Anyway, F-117 is retired from service.

Chinese military tech is generally based on equivalent Russian ones.

I don't believe much of this article.

We are exporting technology to our enemies for the highest bid with intellectual property rights being violated.

A dirty secret no one wants to address. [IMO]

If this plane hadn't been stealthily killing people it wouldn't have been there to be shot at.

Military power can be useful as a deterrant. Once it is called into use, it defeats its own purpose.

The U.S. can't be actively militant in so many areas of the world and still call foul when someone 'borrows' one of their ideas.

"Military power can be useful as a deterrant. Once it is called into use, it defeats its own purpose."

Exactly, which is why I'm wondering with why China is building the J-20 if (according to your confusing logic) upon its usage it defeats its own purpose of deterrence.

No because the China under the CCP isn't militant.

US's stealth plane is actually a cheap German Knock Off. Germany has it in WWII already. They look practically the same.

Cheap German Knockoff?

Not really! The flying wing built after WW2 was found to have a small radar signature.

Most of the stealth technology was borrowed from the SR 71 and the skunkworks projects.

The closest thing Germany had under development was the ME 163 Komet which was more of a rocket powered glider than a plane. Its intention was to survive and perhaps take an American bomber with it. [Not stealth]

There was a development project for a four engine New York Bomber that never materialized. Just don't recall any "Stealth Knockoff"
05:09 AM on 01/26/2011
Well they look the same. Isn't it the argument against the Chinese stealth plane? It looks similar a F22 so it is a knock off. OK, minus the canard but who cares of the details.

The Chinese Communist Party(CCP) is a brutal regime that has no respect for human rights or life. The Governments of the World are well aware that the cruel CCP practice slavery, torture and even organ harvesting on its own people. The reason that Western Governments turn a blind eye is corporate greed. To learn more facts about the brutal CCP, one may go on line and read The Nine Commentaries. Thank you for your consideration.

And just to think, only a decade ago there was clear ethical water between their behavior and that of the USA.
09:02 PM on 01/25/2011
Be realistic. The reason you have the illusion that there is clear difference is only because you are not aware of what US has been doing across the globe at that time.

It is the same. The only difference you are more aware of the situation as it is getting more and more difficult to walk around with emporer's new clothes.

I didn't have to read the article to know that most if not all of China's technology is taken from others. Their reputation for re-engineering has been around for decades. It doesn't help that we keep taking our technology there to have it manufactured. We're practically giving away our ideas for the almighty dollar.

Let em keep it, we got those drone fighters coming soon enough.

We need to get that railgun system working too.

and airborne laser. we could improve the infantry weapons as well, as tank armor too to better protect against air strikes

Let's borrow another Thrillion from Chinese to spend on R&D for weapons that probably won't work, or can be used.

One F-117 was lost in combat with the Army of Yugoslavia, on 27 March 1999.

On May 7, 1999 (a mere ten days later) five US JDAM bombs hit the People's Republic of China Embassy in the Belgrade district of New Belgrade, killing three PRC citizens and outraging the Chinese public. George Tenet, the then Director of the CIA testified before congress that the strike was the only one in the Kosovo campaign organized and directed by the CIA.

President Bill Clinton later apologized for the bombing, stating it was accidental. (Anybody believe this still? Didn't think so.)

So in my opinion any right thinking individual would see that this was an attempt to destroy the material that the Chinese had collected. Guess it failed. The world is an interesting place.

US is building an air domination based on the fact that their weapons will be not lost in the battle field.

Do you think there is something wrong with this?

Sooner or later, people realize this so called air domination is based on a mixture of flashy but difficult to maintain gadgets, word-twisting terminlogies, Hollywood image propagating, and over the top fragile science.

One weapon down, the whole thing is exposed. Need to cover it quick. Mabye that is the real interesting thing about the whold incident.
07:13 AM on 01/25/2011
If you ask me, the real threat of China posts to US is not about their weaponry advancement, but they are finally realizing how to project their SOFT POWER by COPYING the American way, the way full of hot air.
05:44 AM on 01/25/2011
Hero walks into the battle field with his nice looking, angle shaping dagger. Before he fights, he makes a nice plead to his opponent, "hey Buddy, we might be engage in a mortal combat, but just want to let you know, I invented this nice looking, angle shaping dagger. So please don't copy it. It means a lot to my case of DSS."

Opponent gave him the blank, "huh?"

"Delusional Superiority Syndrome."

"Oh."

So on day two of the moral combat for world domination, the hero shows up in the battle field and find his opponent carrying a nice looking, angle shape sword. Hero is furious, "YOU COPIED FROM ME. I CAME UP WITH THE ANGLE SHAPE WEAPON FIRST! FIRST! FIRST! IT IS UNFAIRE! ~~~~~~~~~~~ I QUIT! ~~~~~~~~~~~"

"Huh?"

Our Defense people, from the Pentagon to the Contractors think that every eemy we fight is stupid and a new high tech weapon will make it easy to defeat them. In Vietnam, the US was so sure the NVA was stuoid, they never changed commo frequencies or call signs. The NVA and Vietcong had modified SONY radios to pick up US radio frequencies. They had teams who did noting but moniter the radio traffic 24/4. They knew every commnader of every unit down to platoon levcel, and could even predict what each commander would do in any situation. Even after the US found this out, it was still like pulling teeth to get the Ground units to follow well established Signal SOP's for SIGSEC.

And don't even get me started on how the NVA kept outsmarting the Airforce/Navy with their SAM's!

Amen,

We were convinced that the Japanese aircraft were inferior copies of ours until we met the Mitsubishi Zero.

The same thing happened in Korea with the Mig 15
12:13 PM on 01/26/2011
The Mitsubishi Zero was superior to (which) the American aircraft...how??

But wait:

Who is "we"? Who is "ours"? Did you mean the American people? But wait. YOU'RE NOT EVEN FROM AMERICA!

SO MUCH FOR YOUR POST ABOUT YOU CALLING ME A TOOL AND A FOOL ON THE OTHER THREAD.
