360 Degree Interactive Helicopter Ride (VIDEO)

Interactive Helicopter Video

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/24/11 06:24 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

This might be the coolest thing you see... ever.

If you've ever wondered what it might look like to hang from a helicopter, here's your chance.

Nimmo Bay Fishing and Wilderness Resort takes you over 150 miles of British Columbia's coastal mainland, and gives you the reins. The video below not only gives you a stunning view of the area, but it gives you the chance to control the camera.

Click anywhere in the frame and move your mouse to control the view as the helicopter takes you over mountains, rivers, lakes, and the Canadian wilderness.

We also STRONGLY suggest watching this in full screen; you'll feel like you're hanging from the chopper itself.

WATCH (and look around!):

Now you see why environmentalism relates to your children and their future. A huge portion of that forest is dying because the winters aren't cold enough. And in the forest are the wonderfu animals Sarah Palin loves to shoot with her oh so cool rifle. And that destruction is just so you can have cheap gasoline for your flipping mega vehicles. Green energy will cost a lot to get up and it is worth every penny because you cannot buy back the beauty of that land.

Nice ride. The music sucks - I give a 4...the words were bleaaah, the beat is bad, and it's hard to dance to.

Great to see HuffPo pick up on this and embed it. Ryan Whitehead's creation here, delivered on the yellowBird interactive player, is a fantastic representation of the possibilities that 360 degree, immersive, or spherical video brings. You likely have seen the tech before (it was originally behind Google StreetView), but now it is reaching people and changing the way we think about visual recording. Check out @northStudio360, @the_yellowbird, @biglook360, @blueprints360, @slopeviews, and look up some of the stuff we did at Immersive Media or checkout my http://360videoblog.blogspot.com/. If you'd like to go skiing, click here http://media.yb.nl/360ski/.
The other big news in 360 video today was the release of the Black-Eyed Peas new iphone app featuring 360 degree, interactive video.
The thing that sets Ryan's project for Nimmo Bay apart is that he built the camera rig and process from his own design all the way through post-production. Hats off to all involved.

You stand corrected? How about "I made a fool of myself on HP." LOL. Think before being so quick with the criticism.

Click and drag on the video player screen to look around. Follow your interest around the sphere of view. You are in control.

Absolutely fantastic video! Loved that you could see the helo too. I'm so old I can remember when all we had was 3 channels and most shows when still black and white. What a tremendous display of the beauty of nature and the beauty of technology. All tainted by one hell of a crappy song!

Me too, I like the song but I can't take Leonard Cohen. k d Lang does a great version of it.

it took me a few minutes to figure out how to do it on my lap top since i don't have a mouse, but once i did, so worth it!!!
