New Antidepressant Less Likely To Lower Sex Drive, Approved By FDA

Antidepressants Sex Drive

U.S. health regulators on Friday approved Clinical Data Inc's (CLDA.O) antidepressant vilazodone under the brand name Viibyrd, a potential multibillion-dollar seller that may not interfere with sexual desire as seen with some rival drugs.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Viibyrd at doses of 10 milligrams, 20 mg, and 40 mg for major depressive disorder, or major depression. Clinical Data shares rose nearly 15 percent in extended trading.

Like other antidepressants, Viibyrd will carry a boxed warning and a patient medication guide describing the increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults ages 18 to 24 during initial treatment.

The warning also says data did not show the increased risk in adults older than 24 and that patients ages 65 and older who take antidepressants have a decreased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior.

Clinical Data believes its drug's dual mechanism of action and side effect profile will differentiate it from a crowded field.

In clinical trials, vilazodone use did not cause significant weight gain or the negative impact on sexual desire or function seen with many other antidepressants that lead many patients to abandon their medicine.

"We're going to be extremely well positioned in a category where under 50 percent of individuals get satisfaction on their first line therapy," Clinical Data Chief Executive Drew Fromkin told Reuters in an interview last year.

"I absolutely believe that this drug can be north of a $1 billion drug," Fromkin said.

The company is expected to seek additional approvals for other psychiatric conditions, such as anxiety disorders.

Some analysts believe that with additional approvals Viibyrd could eventually garner annual sales in excess of $2 billion.

"Major depressive disorder is disabling and prevents a person from functioning normally," Thomas Laughren, the FDA's, director of the Division of Psychiatry Products, said in a statement.

"Medications affect everyone differently, so it is important to have a variety of treatment options available to patients who suffer from depression," Laughren said.

Clinical Data owns full rights to the drug with Germany's Merck KGaA (MRCG.DE) getting some royalties on sales.

Clinical Data shares rose 14.7 percent to $17.24 in after-hours trading from their Nasdaq close at $15.03. (Reporting by Bill Berkrot; editing by Carol Bishopric)

Why is it that when I, as a categorized bi-polar II individual, do an internet search on this new anti-depressant all I see are see articles about how its stock has risen 14%?
Isn't this MORE about helping people and LESS about the money? You have to dig deep into the search engine to find info on clinical trials but boy the stock price is WAY UP FRONT. When I'm depressed the last thing on my mind is sex. Treat the patient to where his/her mood is better and maybe their sex drive will return on its own. Hell, I'd gladly trade no sex for a stable mood and other sources of happiness than sex. Very disheartening.

I know about Big Pharma, but HP, where is your article about the success rate in trials? Maybe if I was in a better mood I'd get some Viagra or Cialis to treat sexual dis-function but all I want to be is happy again.
Shame on you HP and everyone else that looks at this drug as a money maker as opposed to a drug that may give someone like me the happiness we all deserve, including a healthy sex drive.

The difference with this med is the focus on 5-ht. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) or serotonin, is a monoamine neurotransmitter synthesised from L-tryptophan. It has been sold as a supplement by vitamin companies, etc. for years. The word is, that in clinical trials, this anti-depressant had less sexual side effects and less weight gain. And no, I don't work big PHARMA. I'ma psychiatric social worker and just this morning, we had a PHARMA rep speak to us about an antipsychotic using the 5-ht focus. It too had less irritating side effects during clinical trials. Little did she know that we would not be using her drug because of the cost, but we did get a nice continental breakfast out of it!

It just came to my mind..."promises, promises..".Is anyone paying attention to the BigPharmas and how they continue to give pills for depression. I believe that the medical system have given up on their patients by prescribing meds before discussing a vast range of Integrative Health practices or methods, many with Evidence Based research that has demonstrated success over a 1000 years. And, with all of the quality health programs available in our Healthy Commuities, why continue to give a prescription for an 'anti-depressant' that has little evidence of treating the whole person while only offering temporary relief for the depression.

At least refer patients with Stress Anxiety and Depression to a whole health or holistic health practitioner who treats the whole being--physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and socially. At least Give Health A Chance.

Pills are so cheap, compared to having a full time staff to treat a person's whole being. So they can be given to low income folks who cannot afford nice trip to Sedona while a nanny takes care of their kids and an accountant handles the bills from the trust fund for them.

Well, that may be true for the very wealthy, but there are numerous health practices that can be done in your home. I have a series of 24 exercises that provide me and others, who do the program regularly, the necessary strength, coordination, balance and flexibility to live a full and complete life. I add some yoga, tai chi movements and meditation -- very little expense, but great results. This is a link to the Psychocalsithenics or Master Level Exercises available on this website: http://www.arica.com and http://jerryvest.pages.qpg.com.

Have you tried Aplenzin? It's a slightly different form of Wellbutrin and no sexual side effects from either of them.

I have been clinically depressed for some time now and I have lived with one form of depression or another for most of my life. I stopped taking SSRI type anti depressants because of their sex reducing side effect. While I'm sure that this new drug will not be on my HMO's formulary any time soon and it will probably cost north of $10 a pill, if it works it could give me my life back.
