Flavor Flav Opens 1st Fried Chicken Restaurant In Planned Chain

01/24/11 07:13 AM ET   AP

CLINTON, Iowa — Rapper and reality TV star Flavor Flav is bringing the flavor of chicken to Iowa.

Flav's Fried Chicken opens Monday in Clinton, Iowa. Flav has been there preparing for the launch and told the Clinton Herald he'll visit often for promotions and even work the fryer.

Flav says it's the first in a chain that stemmed from the 99 cent wings he served at Mama Cimino in Las Vegas. His business partner is the brother of that restaurant's owner.

Flavor Flav, whose real name William Drayton Jr., founded hip-hop group Public Enemy in the '80s. He found fame anew in 2004 on the third season of VH1's "The Surreal Life." He also starred in the network's "Flavor of Love."

He has a culinary degree and restaurant experience.

Call Flav what you want minstrel whatever, but to rise from the ashes its something to be said for that. The shows were stupid I seldom watched. There were many who did watch. Ronald Reagan and the GOP set Civil Rights back with a glaucoma type effect Few noticed until it was to late.
Personally I wish him well and hope he makes it. The takeout boxes can be his famous trademark
clock.

Why are you a hater? Why would you want anyone who is doing something legal and that would bring jobs into a communitee to fail? DON'T HATE - GO HAVE A WING!
10:13 AM on 01/28/2011
Clearly you misunderstand the meme Fail. I wasn't saying I want his restaurant to fail. On the contrary, I want him to be successful. I was merely pointing out the irony that he once said fight the power in the past, but in recent years he has become a corporate Stepin' Fletchet (google it) for the sake of money. From his many shows perpetuating negative and false black stereotypes to his buckwheat esque demeanor he has turned 180 degrees from his original message. He went from fight the power, to making a bafoon out of himself for "the man". Long story short, my initial comment wasn't about hoping that he failed, but pointing to the fact that he is a sell-out of the highest degree.

Hope the dude has a proper financial advisior and business plan.
The track record regarding the survival of celebrity-owned restaurants isn't very good.

Wish you luck, Flav--you will need it (considering whom your competition is).

Seems these days people will sell their soul for loot. No matter their beliefs it doesn't matter. This guy has obviously doesn't care about being cast in a stereotypical light.
12:25 PM on 01/25/2011
it's actually quite powerful to have no fear of being stereotyped. it shows you are living your life for yourself and not for what others think. constantly caring about what others think is a form of self-oppression, imo.

Nope, your projection onto Flav is a fail.

Kudos to Flava Flav for having no fear of others' twisted minds and how they project their own prejudices onto others.

When I first saw the headline yesterday the first thing I thought of was I hope his cluck is way better'n KFC's.

Why should a black person, Asian, white, Middle Eastern person worry about others' preconceived notions of how people should act and what they're supposed to be like and not be like?

I say, right on, Flav and good cluck on the business!

No, P.E. was already founded, but Flav was brought in by the time they signed with Def Jam. Rick Rubin didn't want him at first because he didn't have verses, but Chuck D insisted.

the disapproval of flava flav for profiting off his so-called minstrelry is unfortunate. it is so unfair and ungenerous to hold him to task just because he uses his culinary education to sell fried chicken as opposed to what... chicken cooked italian style? guy sounds like he knows himself and is happy with who he is, and seems like he is especially overjoyed to be able to work the stereotypes to his advantage -hey, i say more power to him. not everybody can be an upstanding, strait laced black person whose very demeanour cries out, "dare to treat me like a stereotype."

america needs more flava flav, i say.

ok. i am confused.
i am from iowa but can't understand why he would choose the town of clinton for his first one.
it's a town of under 30k. the county has less than 50k.
the town can't be doing that well economically since the population has been shrinking since 1980.

wouldn't there be a better community for the first of what he wants as a chain?
11:29 PM on 01/24/2011
It depends. A fried chicken restaurant in the middle of a midwestern food desert could become the most popular food option for the community, depending on the pricing. It's tough to compete in densely populated areas with lots of restaurants and supermarkets. You want to be the best thing going in a community with a lack of options.

i haven't been to that town in a few years. but last time i was there they were your typical 30ish thousand town.
they had fast food joints and mom and pop restaurants.
the last time i was there, 3 or 4 years ago, they seemed to have enough.
i could name other iowa towns of similar or smaller size with much less.
05:57 PM on 01/24/2011
For everyone questioning Iowa--

Many restaurant and food concepts are tried in the midwest as it is believed that something that is successful in the midwest will be generally successful throughout the country. That the concept is not relying on a specfic food history or culture (say, spicy in the southwest) that may not work in other locations.

but that town? it's a shrinking town.
i used to live near there. it's not the greatest town. it's losing population. almost 43% of the population is older.
