Marijuana Soft Drink: Medical 'Soda Pot' On The Way

01/24/11 08:38 AM ET   AP

Marijuana Soft Drink

SOQUEL, Calif. — A California entrepreneur has plans to market a line medical marijuana soft drinks.

Clay Butler says he plans to supply medical marijuana dispensaries with his soda pot, which contains the psychoactive marijuana ingredient THC.

Marijuana drinks are already showing up here and there, but Butler says he thinks his branding savvy will make his product a hit.

Besides his flagship cola drink, Canna Cola, he will also produce Dr. Pepper-like Doc Weed, lemon-lime Sour Diesel, grape-flavored Grape Ape and orange-flavored Orange Kush.

A 12-ounce bottle will cost $10 to $15.

The Soquel-based commercial artist tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel that he doesn't do drugs or need medical marijuana for any ailments.

In Colorado, there are already medical marijuana "sodas" like Dixie Elixirs and Marqhaha. At least their packaging doesn't look like Fanta.

This is plenty amusing, but unfortunately it's stuff like this that also makes the legitimate concept of "medical marijuana" seem like a joke rather than medicine for people who genuinely need it. So no one should then be surprised when uninformed mainstream voters strike down ballot measures for full legalization.

Medical marijuana is no joke. It's extremely effective at replacing all sorts of pharmaceutical products, and unlike most big pharma-medications it can actually work to cure some things, not just help you mitigate the symptoms.

The real joke is that you have to be sick before you're allowed to use a completely safe 100% non-toxic all natural herb, even as a preventative measure. The joke is that if you're healthy we'll send you to jail for using it (even though it won't hurt you or anyone around you) -- but if you're sick enough, it's OK.

It's important to remember that medical marijuana is not LEGAL anywhere -- it's only a weak exception to the illegality of an otherwise benign substance.

Obviously, this situation is completely twisted. We must legalize for all adults, not just the sick ones. Only then will patients actually be considered patients.

Obviously, but my point is how this looks to the people whose votes we need to get pot legalized. I don't have any problem with the drink and I don't think it should be stopped, but we shouldn't fool ourselves into thinking that it has no effect on mainstream voters -- and ballot measures for legalization will never pass without them.

Maybe next it can be liquid crack.

Surprised none of the comments reflect the attractiveness of the packaging to children. Funny me, I don't want to see this anymore than cartoon characters & bright colours on prescription medicine bottles.

Given the option, I'd actually prefer SpongeBob, but so far my Rx bottles are still orange and white and boring...including the ones my medical marijuana comes in...which can only be purchased in a dispensary, where children are not allowed at all. The edibles are also all clearly marked with parental warnings.

So do you think your kids will possibly want to be pirates or winos when they grow up because of the Capt. Morgan bottles they're exposed to in grocery stores? If your children are so easily swayed by cartoon characters and bright colors, maybe it's time you had a talk with them.

I have an array of products in front of me now. They do look a little to kiddy friendly, truth be told. Accidents will happen, kids get into everything, I one got into chocolate ex-lax.
I hope they don't make that anymore.
Oh, you'll find Spongebob stickers in the toy section.

But that's a ridiculous argument... is beer packaged for children, or is it the sexy advertising and social acceptance that makes it so attractive to the kids?

The "What about the kids" argument is completely BS... We have plenty of things in this world that are for adults only. This is no different. And quite frankly, if even one child uses cannabis instead of alcohol, we'll all be better off.
02:33 PM on 01/25/2011
This isn't the first time that the folks in Santa Cruz County have found ways to combine cannabis and capitalism (and surely it won't be the last). During the annual UCSC 4/20 smokeout (which you can read about here:http://www.elephantjournal.com/2011/01/naked-high-civil-disobedience--chloe-chatenever/), there are always a few entrepreneurial students who sell snacks and water bottles to their fellow tokers...at exorbitant prices. They could make quite a bundle if they start selling Doc Weed and Orange Kush, too...
