Northwestern Brothel Rule

City:

The Northwestern administration will not ask Evanston to reconsider its "brothel law," a zoning ordinance that will cause hundreds of students to be evicted next year from off-campus housing, a University official told THE DAILY on Monday.

"City officials said they are not concerned with what the law might do to the real estate market.

'We're not in the business of controlling the housing market,' said Eric Palmer, an Evanston spokesman. 'We don't address that at the local government level.'"

Translation: We don't care if the area turns into a festering trailer park. That's none of our city's business.

this article is already out-of-date. City of Evanston has already changed its mind: http://www.dailynorthwestern.com/breaking-evanston-changes-tune-on-brothel-law-1.2448459

"The city is attempting to use the measure to reduce density in the residential neighborhoods surrounding NU's campus..."
_______________________________________________

What utter bullshizzle.
Over the past decade, downtown Evanston has undergone a transformation with many, MANY condo buildings being built near the NU campus. At least one thousand residential units have been erected in that time, and in a relatively small geographic area, in and around downtown.

This was the city's choice by way of greed which added to the density in the area. And now, they want to boot the lower income renters (students) in favor of the condo owners, 99% whom have parking on site at their residence.
You can bet that the condo owners and developers are behind this BS.

I am SO damned glad I got out of that city 37 years ago. I moved south of the Ev/Chi border into Rogers Park and have been completely happy just visiting Evanston ever since. (And only when absolutely necessary) Usually, I just pass through en route elsewhere on the North Shore.

The city just released a statement saying this isn't true: http://evanston.patch.com/articles/city-no-july-1-change-to-brothel-law-enforcement

In Philly, there was (still?) a rule that sororities could not serve alcohol because a house with four or more girls and alcohol was considered a brothel.

Where are all the tea-party, "that's unconstitutional" trolls?

Oh, I forgot. Palin & Co doesn't want anyone to become educated anyway.

SPARTANS!? What is your profession?

I don't see the problem. By limiting the number of unrelated people that can live in a house you help eliminate noise problems and the existence of student slums.
03:55 PM on 01/26/2011
Evanston is one of the richer suburbs of Chicago, there's no student slums. I live in a 5 bedroom apartment with 4 other people in a large apartment complex and will not be able to continue my lease because of this antiquated law.

Have you ever tried to raise a family in an area where college students live 5 or 6 to an apartment?

This is a pretty naked attempt to drive young people out of evanston and it is WRONG.

And how much do they pay for tuition? This is ridiculous sounds like a sort of city population control measure. Is there an allotment for students having to travel? I hope they have something like that included in tuition.

Most colleges in Chicago (and nearby), at least all the major ones, offer discounted train and bus fare cards. They're quite inexpensive.
05:47 PM on 01/26/2011
Northwestern is not one of these schools however, which makes this ordinance even more of an inconvenience.
07:47 AM on 01/26/2011
This situation reminds me of Troy NY, a lot of the college kids are at ends with the U Albany, RPI, and Siena students. Blue collar vs. white collar.
07:53 AM on 01/26/2011
Mind you in this case, it is white collar vs. white/starched collar.

Time for the students to go live at Northwestern and stop messing up Evanston
03:16 PM on 01/26/2011
Evanston would be another wasteland without Northwestern. And Howard, stop blocking comments you don't personally agree with. I've kept a copy and will forward it to the Huffpo.

Much of NU is in Evanston, why should they live elsewhere?

The obvious remedy is for students to enter into domestic partnerships to be dissolved when convenient.

If the University actually supported the community financially then maybe the town and gown relationship would be better. Evanston continues to harrass students and make life hard, hoping the University will help the town survive, but no......

The only thing is, when the town forces all these rich kids to spend their money in other communities along the El and bus lines, will the businesses on and near campus survive.

Town leaders may cut off their noses.

I got a masters degree at NU and until now I had no idea I was considered a "rich kid".

My parents would have been surprised as well.

Without Northwestern Evanston is just another Lombard. Good luck with your future boarded up businesses.
