Michelle Obama Wears Rachel Roy Dress For State Of The Union (PHOTOS)

Much was made--mostly by Oscar de la Renta--of the first lady wearing a European designer like Alexander McQueen for the state dinner between the U.S. and China last week.

"Mrs. Obama does look great. She should take that and do something. She could do a great good for our industry," de la Renta lamented to WWD, which went on to predict that Mrs. Obama would wear an American designer for Tuesday's State of the Union address.

And that she did, donning a Rachel Roy sheath. Her black and white ribbon was to honor Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

What a bittersweet moment for the Green family -- who knows whether someday Christina-Taylor might have been attending (or even giving) the State of the Union address herself?

One thing about Michelle is that while most women wear similar styles, colors etc Michelle always looks distinguished . No one in that room is wearing a dress that compares to hers.

Where is the "design"? That dress was sold at Sears in the 1960s. You can find racks of looks just like that at your local thrift store and vintage used clothing shop. "Jewel neckline", "princess darts", "3/4 length sleeves", "below knee hemline". Name one thing that was not cliche or found in McCall's Sewing Patterns.

I gotta side with Ms. Liann. Michelle looks good in it, but it's not modern. Laura Bush wore similar types of "sheaths." I'm surprised Michelle wore it and that Roy designed it.

Let's delve into the minds of the different camps who follow what Mrs. Obama wears:

Pros say: She's beautiful, still young, smart with a mind of her own, has a nice figure, shows off that she works out and is willing to experiment with fashion! It reminds us of how we waited to see Jackie O's outfits! She is admirable. So, whats the FLOTUS wearing today?

Cons say: How dare this Democratic spouse (of color, yet) be FLOTUS. I can't believe she gained her education and current status legitimately. How dare she be slender and athletic — and she's no twiggy, look you can see her full hips! Her legs! Regardless, what a waste, shame and threat to my own (ethnic) self-esteem it is for her to wear designer clothes — so what's the so-called FLOTUS wearing today?

It will never end.........there is nothing she or the President can do that would satisfy some......but hey we all have a job to do and haters....hate.....it is just the natural order of things.
