'Vampire Diaries' Urges Fans To 'Catch VD'

First Posted: 01/25/11 01:21 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

The CW series 'Vampire Diaries' is running a campaign asking viewers to 'Catch VD.' One of the ads is below, and you can see photos of the billboards at EW.com.

Just in case anyone should get the wrong idea, the CW's spokesperson told EW, "VD simply stands for Vampire Diaries, and anyone who thinks otherwise should probably get themselves checked out."

'Vampire Diaries' returns January 27.

Quick Poll

Does the campaign make you want to watch 'Vampire Diaries'?

Yes, it's catchy

No, it's in poor taste

I wouldn't watch anyway

Severely underrated show, CW is constantly putting out better programming than NBC, and even Fox in lot of cases. Ideally CW should be #3 behind CBS and ABC in ratings.

As for VD, comeon now, like 1% of Vampire Diaries audience knows that its same as ST|)s, the term is more or less non-existent, and The Vampire Diaries is pretty prominent on the ad, if you can't connect the 2 dots, you can go call Sarah P mommy and change your name to Trig.

At least they're not sparkling, though they do appear preternaturally "moist".

Stupidity at it's best, no wonder people are not watching TV as much.

A recent study showed that people are watching more TV now than ever. The only reason ratings are down across the board is because there are more options to choose from.

Most people in the target demographic don't think of VD the same as those of us a little older do. They think of them as STDs. But still, this ad is just gross.
02:31 PM on 01/25/2011
Why would you even want to make that connection? I don't want the show, but I would think they could come up with something better than 'Catch VD'.
02:32 PM on 01/25/2011
Sigh... watch, not want. It was bound to happen today.

sex might sell, but since when is VD sexy?

Aside from the fact this channel is geared towards tweens and teens, and aside from the fact that sex--ed in school makes it clear what VD is, and how its a play on words....Why do they all look like they were dipped in olive oil??

I was thinking the same thing. Since when are vampires oily? When they try to tan? This is just a poorly conceived and executed ad from start to finish.

Right?? Apparently according to Twilight, they also 'sparkle' when exposed to sunlight. I was pretty okay with them burning up or exploding like the good ol' days.

I wouldn't watch on 2 counts, A)the content , and B) the title (really guys, that's what passes as creative these days?) .
04:27 PM on 01/25/2011
in all fairness the title comes from the book it's based on. and honestly a billboard has about 5 seconds to catch your attention.........a huge "VD" will likely catch peoples attention. therefore it did what it was supposed to do.
01:39 PM on 01/25/2011
I don't think it will work. Their ideal audience is too young to know what VD stands for. That term has been replaced with STD for years now.
01:44 PM on 01/25/2011
Unfortunately this is true. I do think, however, that someone on their advertising crew has a cheeky sense of humor.
