Verizon will offer a $30 dollar unlimited data plan for the Apple iPhone -- but just for now.

When the much-anticipated phone launches in February, customers will have the option of purchasing an unlimited data plan, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot," COO Lowell McAdam told the Journal. "Not offering an unlimited plan would put up a barrier for customers who might otherwise switch from AT&T."

But the deal will only last for a short time--McAdam went on to say that Verizon would switch to a tiered system, much like the one AT&T has in place, eventually. But the company will also rid themselves of the $15 dollar for 150 MB pay model for mid-range smartphone data usage, ushering those users up into the $30 tier, according to Engadget.

Anticipation of the iPhone has held back subscriber growth as eager Apple-ites wait for their shot at the Verizon version of Apple's smartphone. There are also questions surrounding the Verizon network's ability to withstand the data burden the iPhone could bring--AT&T has said Verizon iPhone users should be "ready for life in the slow lane."

Verizon's $30 unlimited data for the iphone will also have allot of hidden extra fee's to pay to get this plan so don't hold your breath, my boyfriend read about these hidden fee's in the paper in the small print.
I'll rather stick to my cheap unlimited prepaid plan with Straight Talk for only $45 for unlimited talk, texts,web,e-mail and free calls to 411. I use the Straight Talk Nokia E71 which is a great smart phone and I'm not going to pay through my nose for unlimited everything.

Customers of every carriers should not be forced to add data plans if they sign contracts. The only time I want a data plan is If I don't have wifi at my home.

My daughter has a Samsung reality that Verizon forced us to buy a data plan for. Now they are going to up the price for that? She doesn't even use data! This it outrageous! Time to write a letter to the attorney general.

Why I won't switch to V: when I go abroad I can get calls on my ATT iPhone. Hoping some others migrate away and clear space on ATT. I'm locked into my data plan. ATT has better service where I live.

Unfortunately the iPhone of Verizon will not offer worldwide GSM for when I travel to Europe as my current Verizon phone does so it is useless to me.

Same problem. There are rumors that the iPhone 5 will work on both GSM and CDMA networks.

The world is migrating to LTE, doesn't help you now but in a couple of years that argument wont be accurate.

Is it really worth $360 per year for gadgetry?

some will say absolutely yes! me... nah... but that's ok.
when you add up all the monthly fees... cable TV, internet, mobile phone, electricity...e t c...

the left-overs are slim indeed...

No doubt. I've been scheming lately trying to find ways to consolidate or eliminate all my various monthly gadget bills. Such a tangled web we weave...

If its used as a tool then yes it is worth it, otherwise you make a decent point. To think people complain about taxes when they spend so much on discretionary items.

Love my Vodafone unlimited 3G plan for 9 Euros a month.

on top of that my home internet is 60MB/s downspeed unlimited for 25 Euros a month.

I can recall 15 years ago when I lived in Germany paying sometimes 600 Marks a month to get online.

Verizon has he best service of all the cellphone companies; AT&T leaves a lot to be desired.

I agree. I wish I could still afford VZ but had to drop down to Virgin Mobile for the time being.

I've always found the Verizon customer service reps are actually interested in your problems and you won't be hanging up the phone with them until those problems are solved. And yes, AT&T leaves a lot to be desired.

Same here, for $30 extra I have Hotspot. I cancelled $47 worth of home phone and internet. That puts me back to what I was paying 10 years ago for cell phone and dial up.

I'm with you -- have the EVO and love it, plus the free mobile-to-mobile is pretty sweet.

I'm trying to figure out why my Kindle downloads a book from Amazon.con from the 3G network for free, but to download the same book from the same place on the same network brings a data charge from AT&T.
