Stephen Colbert's 'Nazi-ometer' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/26/11 02:28 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

There's been a lot of talk about Nazis lately, from Jon Stewart's takedown of Rep. Steve Cohen after he compared them to the GOP, to Megyn Kelly's claim that no one at Fox News uses the term. It seems like people will never understand that no one is a Nazi or Hitler unless they are actually a member of the Nazi party or literally Adolph Hitler.

Since there's no sign of the Nazi rhetoric going away, Stephen Colbert is making sure people use the correct outrageously off-base Hitler references with the "Nazi-ometer."

"For anyone out there who wants to demonize a political opponent, I have produced a chart of Nazis in descending order of 'Naziness,' rated on a scale of 1-10 Hitlers."

Check out the clip below to see who made Colbert's Nazi list.

"Horace: Hitler is to politics what Einstein is to religion: voices of cultural significance thrown around like grenades, with brute force making up for lack of precision.

Jasper: And that’s only because Hitler is still relevant. His name’s still on everyone’s lips. Books are still being written about him. The History Channel’s practically dedicated to him.

Horace: And as long as Obama is president, FoxNews will be too."

Watching only a few seconds of historical footage of the concentration camps makes it obvious how ridiculous the current Nazi comparisons are. Some events in American history, like the extermination of the Native Americans, are comparable.

I do wonder how far the right wing extremists would go, if given the chance. If people hated by the right were literally being rounded up and sent to death camps, would someone like Rush Limbaugh condemn it or encourage it? Does a moral line exist for an extremist like him? How many of his followers would cheer the mass murder of the people they revile? If you're going to bring up the issue of Nazi comparisons, you have to ask what the limits of the extreme right actually are.

You wonder about this? Your a complete fool.

Thank you for the insightful comment. I take it that you are so in tune with Limbaugh's thinking that you know with certainty how far he would go. I hope one day to also have such enlightenment, along with the ability to distinguish "your" from "you're."

I think you know the answer to your questions. All "morality" is relative to whether someone is seen as a political adversary or friend. There is no other line. Coulter has stated as much as has LImbaugh.

What clips I've seen of Limbaugh lead me to believe he is a hate filled fanatic. I don't waste my time following him. I don't know how much of what he says is hot gas designed to maintain his ratings and income, and how much is sincerely held prejudice. Would he support mass murder? I have no idea. (That the automatic answer to that isn't no is the general point I'm making about the Nazi comparisons.) A guy like Beck I believe is 90% circus show, 10% ideology, and 100% motivated by greed and bottom line for himself.

Not sure what to think of Nazis anymore. Perhaps they were they misunderstood? I'm sure it would have looked different through their eyes.

Funny stuff on Colbert. If only the rest of our actual pundits and politicians would tone down the rhetoric of it...
