Gabrielle Giffords Gets Speaking Valve, Will Begin Full Rehab

Gabrielle Giffords Rehab

HOUSTON — Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Wednesday left intensive care for the first time since she was shot in the head in Arizona more than two weeks ago, the latest big step in the long road to recovery.

With her progress moving at "lightning speed," doctors had the Arizona lawmaker moved to TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital, where she immediately began therapy that could last several months.

Doctors said she will have a valve inserted into her breathing tube to help her talk.

When asked if the congresswoman was able to speak, neurosurgeon Dr. Dong Kim said, "we can say that her speech function, along with everything else, is improving" but declined to elaborate.

Giffords, 40, had been in intensive care since her arrival Friday from Tucson, where she was shot Jan. 8 while meeting with constituents. The gunman killed six people and injured 13 others in a rampage outside a supermarket.

Doctors had said she would remain in the ICU until they were able to remove a tube that had been placed in her head to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid. A backup of the fluid can cause pressure and swelling within the brain.

Kim said the catheter was removed Monday after a scan showed there was no longer a dangerous buildup of fluid.

The three-term Democratic lawmaker's ability to swallow safely could mean she won't need a tube feeding her much longer, said Dr. Imoigele Aisiku, director of neurocritical care at Memorial Hermann.

Giffords began physical, occupational and speech therapy just hours after she was transferred, under heavy guard, in an ambulance from the ICU of a Texas Medical Center hospital to the rehab center.

"It's a busy afternoon already and I anticipate it will be more so in the coming days," Dr. Gerard Francisco, the head of her rehabilitation team, said at a news conference.

A breathing tube was placed in Giffords' neck after she was shot. Aisiku said while she can breathe independently and swallow safely, the tube cannot be immediately removed because of the length of time it has been in place.

Instead, doctors will lessen her dependence on it, a process that has already begun, until it can be safely removed.

Precise details on Giffords' recovery were scant out of respect for the family's wishes, doctors said, though Kim said Giffords was making progress at "lightning speed."

Doctors did not say whether she is able to sit up or stand on her own.

Doctors had previously reported that Giffords was having difficulty moving the right side of her body. On Wednesday, they described that as "weakness" and said her ability to move had improved.

The transport from the intensive care unit earlier in the day was done under heavy police presence.

Helicopters buzzed overhead and police stopped traffic and blocked the road as an ambulance took Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, to the rehab facility. Television footage showed a gurney wheeled into the building.

It was the first time she had been outside intensive care since the shooting, said James Campbell, a TIRR spokesman.

Doctors said Giffords is doing her rehabilitation in her room and not in the hospital's large gym-like facilities where dozens of patients can undergo therapy simultaneously.

Giffords is interacting with the staff and her family and is awake "about as much as you or I are," Aisiku said.

Jared Loughner, the 22-year-old man accused in the shootings, has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of trying to assassinate Giffords and two of her aides. He also faces other federal murder charges.

I would love to see Gabrielle make a full recovery. She has the courage and the character to be our first woman President...I had to make a full recovery from the loss of my Pancrease and a deadly battle with Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome. It took a yr to recover and had to learn everything again..I also had a trach and was on a breathing tube for two months before that.Once I got the trach I could speak again.I hope once Gabby gets the trach which allows her to talk she will be able to.

As a person who has experienced brain injury first-hand, I am very interested in the progress of Gabrielle Giffords. Her progress so far has been quite remarkable. But the most important issues remain to be addressed. For a person with a left-brain injury, speech and weakness (hemiplegia) on the right side are crucial, since these functions are controlled by the left half of the brain.

My hope is that she will be able to return to the House and take up her old duties again, but that is still a long shot. Most people with injuries as severe as hers are not able to return to their old jobs, and her job is an unusually demanding one. However, I was one of the ones who was able to beat the odds, and that is my profound hope for her.

To have an advocate for brain injury treatment in the House would be very important for all the brain-injured soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Her stature to speak out against gun violence would be immense.

Are we looking at the first woman President?

I'd vote for her!

My mom was a breakfast house waitress for many years. She loved people and had the same customers for years. She got well wishes and huge baskets of everything from people we, the family, had never heard of. Although totally paralyzed on her left side (read above) she went back to the breakfast house and was allowed to have 1 table to wait on. It was her pride and joy. She was able to walk, with the help of a special brace, by sort of rocking back and forth and still carry a large tray on her shoulder. Maybe it's just me, but I think Rep. Giffords has that same tenacity for life.

Prior to the incident- I was not aware of her party affilication-regardless- she did not deserve what happened to her. Speedy recovery Gabby-the entire country is rooting for you!! You have a seat in Congress wating for you!

Who needs a 50 rounds assault rifle, with scope , laser-pointer and built-in grenade launcher as a recreational rifle that could take out a crowd 4 miles away ? We're not in Afghanistan !
Just ban war weapons and restrain the use of those allowed to private property, shooting ranges and preserves, besides, I never had fun shooting a pistol or a semi-auto machine-gun, bolt-action rifle are way sufficient and have a lesser mass-shooting capability.

DARPA is working on a deal to have a sample of her DNA. They want real life wolverines. Gabby is seriously a person with extraordinary regenerative abilities. I dont care how fast they got her to the hospital that terrible day, a normal person would have fallen right then and there.

Sounds like you're jumping to conclusions regarding her genetic makeup. Perhaps it is pure luck that the bullet took a lucky, less harmful trajectory into her brain which is the rarity instead. Not saying you're wrong but I am assuming you have no access to the medical information or diagnosis.

This is one of the most inspirational and remarkable come back kid stories I have read in a long time. I believe most of us, here in the HP zone, feel the same, no? si? I hope she makes it a full come back all the way to the halls of congress where she can kick some #@&% !! We send lots of best wishes for her husband as well. The power of love is amazing.

I'm not a religious person but I'm saying a small prayer to her inner spirit to make a speedy and full recovery. Then Congress must pass a health care act which will give every victim of a shooting like this the same coverage Gabrielle Giffords has.

Absolutely tahoeprogressive! I am in total agreement. " All men (and women) are created equal " and deserve the best that medicine and education, ( to name a few ), can deliver. That formula brings out the best in all of us.

There is precedent for such a bill. Washington State has had a crime victim compensation program since the early 70's when a remarkable woman was shot in the UW Arboretum and rendered a quadriplegic for the last 2 years of her life. http://www.lni.wa.gov/ClaimsIns/CrimeVictims/About/default.asp

There is no reason the public could not defend themselves with rubber bullets. They will stop a person with no problem and are used for riots . The only ones who should have any other ammo are police . The capacity of guns today was never known or imagined by the people who put the ammendment into place, they would have never dreamed it would come to this . It's time to adapt . Even THEY would have told you that.

Great idea about rubber bullets only. Hunters will need bullets for their rifles but anything else needs to be banned.
