Chris Matthews: Bachmann Displays 'Profound Ignorance' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/27/11 08:48 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

Chris Matthews kept up his criticism of Michele Bachmann on his Tuesday show for her statements about American history, saying that she displayed "profound ignorance."

Matthews was speaking to Texas Tea Party leader Phillip Dennis and Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capeheart. After playing the now-infamous clip of Bachmann saying that the founding fathers "worked tirelessly to end slavery," Matthews turned back to his guests, still astonished at her interpretation of history. It was the second day in a row that he lambasted Bachmann; on Tuesday, he called her a "balloon head."

"I don't know what to make of it," Matthews said. "...I call her a balloon head for a reason. She has no grasp or knowledge of American history. I mean it, she's proving it."

Dennis said that he mostly agreed with Matthews about Bachmann's misreading of history, but that, in some ways, she was "technically right."

"No she wasn't!" Matthews yelped. "Why do you cover for this ignorance? This is profound ignorace...these people have like the code of omerta when it comes to ignorance that's coming out of the mouth of Michele Bachmann."

For those of you Bachmann apologists who want us t read the Founding Father's words on the importance of abolition, I give you a letter from Patrick Henry ("Give me liberty, or give me death!") and his opinion of slavery:

Patrick Henry on Slavery * January 18, 1773

Yes, he wrote some lovely words about how evil the practice was. Yet, it would be too inconvenient to release his slaves. Not like he was working tirelessly, was it?

Well, Mr. Chris...Ignorance is the name of the game with the GOP and Tparty. We don't like it one bit It has no place in our politics I agree. These two parties are certainly dumbing down our great country...America.

And Donald Trump falls right into that category by what he said yesterday...he wants to bring respect back to America. Haaa, haaaa, oh, my gosh, that is rich. Can you imagine what other countries must think about America given these crazies. They want to blame it all on our president, but in reality it is THEM......Typical.
Mr. Chris. I agree with you wholeheartedly and more.

Bachman comes from an isolated area of Minnesota where Inn Breedin is necessary. They sit around on the cold nights, and make up stories and after awhile, they think they are real.

Saw this when it aired and could not stop laughing. Phillip Dennis looked sick to the stomach that he had to find some way to spin/defend her. Chris has been on point the last week or two with his calling things out...

Michele Bachman and Sarah Palin are beyond stupid. The founding fathers fought hard until slavery was over? It wasn't over until 40 or 50 years after they died - and they did very little if anything to alleviate it before dying. This is extreme ignorance, which seems a hallmark of most Tea Party politicians if not the movement itself. Cut taxes and reduce the deficit - also idiocy at work!

So true. Every time repubs hold the reins of government they increase the debt. It seems that after "daddy" Bush lost to Clinton, their motto has been to never talk about or raise taxes. You can't cut taxes and reduce the deficit. No employee ever ask his employer to cut his pay to increase his standard of living.

Chris Mathews is a jerk. He is the worst messenger for his own message. I like the message, but I find his style of delivering it so distasteful that I never view his program.

Bachmann saying that the founding fathers "worked tirelessly to end slavery"

In her defense - maybe she meant "worked tirelessly to call slavery 'hired help'!

How does she defend the founding fathers counting slaves as only 3/5's of a person if they meant to abolish slavery? I guess all men were not created equal, at least not at that point in time.
