Ricky Gervais And Steve Carell Together At Last On 'The Office' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/28/11 06:42 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

The international branches of 'The Office' have finally collided.

British comedian Ricky Gervais created and starred in the original, two-season British vintage of the workplace comedy, playing painfully awkward and desperate boss David Brent. Steve Carell made the role his own as Michael Scott in the long-running US version, and now as Carell's time on the show winds down, it was finally time for the two to meet.

Gervais made an appearance on the show on Thursday, a brief meeting between the two that delivers entirely on the common hilarity of their characters.

And, Gervais isn't the only huge comedy name to lend his talents to 'The Office' this season: Will Ferrell will star in a four-episode arc at the end of this season to help see Carell off the show.

Too bad Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant can't save The Office. That show died a painful death a long time ago. At least Carell has the dignity to leave. Almost every character on that show is basically a cartoon. Please, let it die. And the UK Office was funny every single episode. The closest character to a cartoon was Gareth, and he was much more subtle than Dwight, who comes across as certifiably insane. Not believable, like most American sit coms.

The comment banter is at least as good for a laugh-out-loud moment is as the clip itself!

This show jumped the shark once Pam & Jim got married. Once Michael Scott leaves, it's done.

Indeed, the sexual tension between them in seasons 1-3 drove alot of the show. Nowadays I just hope for a real funny line from Kevin.

I kept waiting for one of them to say, "Wait... *you* played a prank where you pretended to fire an employee? No way, *I* played a prank where I pretended to fire an employee!"

saw the american version first in syndication and quickly grew to adore the hyperemotional michael scott. always kills me how he cries when things go awry.

ive seen some episodes of the british version, and while i like ricky gervais' role very much, i think the american cast is stronger all round. dwight schrute is funnier to me than his gareth counterpart.

early benny hill was funny, more literate humour than the lazy slapstick that marked his later shows. there's a lot of genius in british humour (ab fab), and a lot of the formulaic, too (vicar of dibley).

I'm in the same boat, the British version is a bit more subtle and certainly humorous, but whenever Michael has to hold back tears, my second hand embarrassment and laughter collide to make a sort of cringing giggling that's all the creepier.

Isn't that a great show? Can't wait myself!

But I hope they don't forget they hired him on "The Office." I love watching the women go batty over him!

Hey, that may be the most unoriginal reply to any of my comments ever. Judging from all your responses to my other posts, are you only capable of repeating what I say or is it possible for you to come up with an original thought on your own?

Wow, the reasons I love both versions and hate fans that are exclusive to one version all in one thread! :D

I though Gervais did a great job. I can understand that why people are upset, but I thought he did what he was supposed to do- push the envelope.

just my opinion....I think Carell is overrated in general....I think Gervais is the second best comedian working today after Louis CK.

How can you overrate a man that turns whatever role he's given into incredibly sympathetic and multi-layered characters? Maybe you misspoke.

Well, I do think of Gervais as a "number two", but probably not in the same sense you do.
09:04 AM on 01/30/2011
Wow, I can't believe how much I've missed David Brent. Gervais is truly the greatest comedian of the last decade (Dave Chappelle might have challenged if he had done another couple of seasons of his sketch show).
